Beautifully sung and incisively played. Altho i think it's always neccessary to see a Martinu opera,(recordings are unsatisfactory, due to frequent spoken dialog and fragmentary scenes),here there is a palpable sense of space and movement. I saw the revival of this production in London in 2012, most enjoyable, but here the sound is fuller and the expressive singing makes full effect, especially with perfect diction. Just to note: correctly it should always be "Julietta" as Martinu wished to differentiate from Neveux's Juliette in his play, but no matter, the French will always frenchify everything! Thank you so much for a lovely extract.
Thank you so much for this! I saw this production in spring 2006 as a student in Paris. I've been looking for it ever since. If you could PM me on how I might go about finding the whole performance, I would great appreciate it.
@sctisdel About the CDs. The Charles Bruck French version (Chant du Monde) is quite good, despite the distant and thin orchestra, as it was in radio recordings at that time. There is also the Jaroslav Krombholc Czesh version (Supraphon), and of course the recent Kožená / Mackerras highlights (Supraphon). Therefore, even if those discs are not always available, it remains possible to hear them.
What a wonderful thing to see on youtube. Juliette has yet to receive its North American premiere and no decent complete commercial recording exists, yet it is one of Martinu's greatest works. I have heard great things about this Paris production, so this is exciting to hear. Any chance of getting the rest of this performance on youtube? You would be doing a great service to all the opera lovers out there.
@sctisdel About this broadcast. I agree of course : great work in Martinů's career, and great version in Paris (unfortunately, I was not there then). I will not put in on TH-cam nor elsewhere, as it is not in public domain (work and interpretation). However, as it is a public broadcast, please check your private messages, I will try to help you in finding it. Thank you for your comment !
