  • We spend most of our lives working and planning for retirement. When it's finally time to retire, finding the right place to live is key. WalletHub ranked the 50 states and Washington, DC. in order of best and worst places to retire. Analysts compared the states based on affordability, quality of life and health care. Within those three main categories, there were 31 additional metrics to rank the states.

    I worked in administration in a nursing home many years ago. Repeatedly I heard the same sad story from residents who relocated for retirement. Almost all regretted leaving their homes where they had built a lifetime of community ties with friends, church, volunteer groups, etc. Why not just retire in your own living room? Plus moving "close to the kids/grandkids" might "seem" like a good idea until you get there & learn quickly that those kids & grands have lives of their own that don't include spending all their extra time with old people. It's a hard truth to swallow but the grass is NOT greener on the other side of the fence.

      That's what we did. We retired. We have a huge home (over 5000 sq. ft. on a couple acres) and had considered downsizing. But then I thought what will I do with all this stuff. We're already in Colorado one of the best states to retire in. So we retired in our own home.

      @@mafp22w If you live in two communities you have two groups of friends. Retirement in a 55 plus community puts you together with people that share one thing at least, you know the past. For years we rented in Palm Springs, our friends had moved down there and we enjoyed doing stuff with them. When the weather got too hot they would often come up to Oregon. But now they have passed and we are looking to buy our own place down there.

    Clearly, tax burden is not considered in this slideshow. Several states have no income tax but have excruciatingly high property taxes (Texas), or very low property taxes but very high sales taxes (Louisiana). Some places don't tax pensions; other places tax every bit of income, including social security. This slide show doesn't reflect the things I'm concerned with.

    These kinds of lists are so dependent on the criteria used to determine a "good" State to retire. For instance, Hawaii is very low in museums, but would you rather have museums, or a spectacular beach you can go to for free all year long? Some may prefer the museums, so pick your State accordingly. Also there are big differences in various areas within one State, so it's hard to rate the whole State.

    I don't know why I bother looking at videos like this. Best and worst can totally change based on what criteria who ever is putting it together deems important. The best place to retire is where you have friends and family to help you as you age and to give you a social support system. That's the most thing. Everything else is secondary.

      So the least corrupt countries who held their citizens hostage for the shortest amount of time had the lowest Boogey Virus rates. Of course.... because people don’t get sick from germs, they get sick from being scared and upset about something that happened in their lives. Enter the worldwide FEAR CAMPAIGN. The Germ Theory was never actually proven to be 100% accurate, yet the trillion dollar medical industry is entirely based on that theory. What's the CAUSE of death in people with this "virus"? Does their brain explode? Does their heart stop beating? The CAUSE of death is still pneumonia. Pneumonia is not something you can "catch". It's a biological result of being "scared to death" of something which is exactly what the media has done to people dumb enough to watch them. You've heard the term "Worried sick". That's because your BRAIN causes you to become sick due to the stress it is perceiving! Why do you think young kids aren't getting the Boogey Virus? Because they aren't sitting in front of the news being scared to death because they're too young to understand a Fear Campaign.
      These pathetic "experts" just make shit it up to explain their narrative as they go. First they tell you kids bring home every illness from school because they're not "exposed" to enough things, then they say somehow they're immune to a Boogey Virus? Does anyone have common sense?! You don't show the symptoms of "disease" until you stop being panicked and afraid. These symptoms usually show up 1-2 weeks after you've relaxed and resolved the upsetting event. There's no such thing that some diseases you can "catch", but not all. It's not that complex! If you can't "catch" cancer, diabetes, MS, arthritis, etc., from other people, then you can't "catch" colds, flu and Boogey Viruses. So governments around the world are CAUSING fear frights in everyone based on an unproven THEORY by one man, Louis Pastaur, who redacted his claim of the germ theory on his death bed, yet no one listened. So of course, when everyone is allowed to escape the hostage situation the governments have put their people into, and they start relaxing about the Boogey Virus, that's not in any way transmissible, they will begin their healing phase (get sick), and believe they then have it, and more panic will ensue as well as martial law. The longer people allow this government to hold them hostage in their homes, the more severe the "sickness" will be. Can anyone put 2 and 2 together to figure out what I'm saying?? Western Medicine is pure fraud, and people's lives are destroyed because of it. There's no critical thinking anymore. People think they're educated because they've memorized the lies they've been told for 100 years.

    my Cousin moved to Arkansas from California to retire, as her daughter was there with 2 kids, and low living cost as she does not have a great retirement. She can actually afford to live there , but tells me about the ice storms and getting in the closet because of Tornado's in the area. She is pretty much stuck in during the winter.
    Her medical through Medicare and the State , is pretty good there , so she figures she will be there for the rest of her life
    I am thinking of retiring near Palm Springs Ca. Bet my cousin comes to visit every January LOL

We spent at least 10 winters there renting from our friends and had planned on buying, but OMG the taxes!!!! We have decided on Az. and will be buying there tis fall, but only for the winters. We currently live on 7 acers of river frontage on the Columbia river in NW Oregon, great in summer but gloomy in winter.

    If you look at a ranking by an outfit with "money" or "business" in it's name, count on financial considerations to outweigh all others. State income taxes, real estate costs, healthcare costs, etc. are very important to many retirees. And considering how little many americans have been saving for that time, these lists will become more useful. For those with more saved, other considerations can come into play. They won't be discussed in great detail in lists like these.

    I live in Arkansas and it is a great place to retire, cost of living is cheap, it is a beautiful state northwest of !-30 and I-40, As a retiree, cost of living is a priority. Taxes are very low, I live in Hot Springs and it is one of the most beautiful cities in America. It all depends on what part of the state you live in. Granted the delta area is horrible.

    • @MrCdfile
      @MrCdfile 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wonder what the contributing factor for that is.

    • @skyhigh6
      @skyhigh6 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The delta area is primarily big farming operations. cotton, rice, soybeans and corn take up the majority of the land. It is flat and poverty is rampant. Many cities in the delta area are drying up, falling apart. While the northwestern part of Arkansas enjoys great job growth, affordable living, and a low crime rate. Although Hot Springs is a resort and retirement community many people flock here because of the cheap cost of living. We have very larger retirement communities with golfing, boating and many types of recreation. I would say that 40% of the people who retire here are from Chicago and Iowa and in the retirement Village 90% are from other states where the cost of living is much higher.
      I have lived in most of the world. I have worked in the big cities, NYC, Houston, Dallas and was shocked at the cost. Houston was the cheapest city to live in, but the traffic and crowding were horrible. Here a traffic jam is usually 20 cars backed up. Rush hour is from 5 to 5:30.
      We have a National Park right around the city. Our city limit is confined by the park limiting the city to a mere 35 square miles. But our county host about 100,000 people.
      The problem of these "so-called" facts is they combine an entire area of a state and that is their criterion. A dollar goes further here than anywhere else except Mississippi. Mississippi has the same problems as our delta country.
      As I have always said, a picture has two sides, one you see the other you do not see.

    Why is Kentucky considered one of the WORST places to Retire? It's Cheap to live here, Low Crime compared to the neighboring states like Tennessee, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Retirees aren't likely to spend their time Mining Coal, and Smoking a Carton a day on top of that, so it is actually a pretty healthy state to live in for a Retiree. Lexington has lots of fun stuff to do like Horse Parks, Museums, Theaters, and whatever Lexington doesn't have, Louisville, or neighboring Cincinnati is likely to have just an hour or so drive away, and the drive will always be enjoyable due to the beautiful natural scenery this great state has to offer. The weather is great compared to Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin with the cold months in the northern extreme of the state still being only about 3-4 months out of the year, and the Southern Extreme of the state being more like Mississippi weather wise. There are specialized Hospitals in all three Major Population Centers of the State (Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky). Sure there's an opiate problem in the state, but all the states listed as the top 10 also have Meth, and or other drug problems.
    Sure Kentucky isn't perfect, but I absolutely reject it being listed as the *EIGHTH WORST* place to Live/Retire in the country (Even below the overtaxed, overpriced, frozen over hell that are the state's of New York, and Illinois... Are you kidding me?!?!?) Kentucky In my humble opinion is among the greatest places to Live, and Retire in the US. You just gotta know where to look.

    Stay away from Idaho! No, do not move here. We native Idahoans were doing just fine until the masses (yes, a lot from that "C" state by the Pacific Ocean) began to move in. I had never heard of HOA dues before. I had never heard of mandatory laws requiring you to keep your outside lights on (this has NOT deterred burglars in my subdivision). I have never gotten a letter from the HOA telling me to take care of the "weeds" in my lawn before (I've now received three letters on various miniscule things!). I used to not lock my door at night because, well, this is Idaho, a "friendly" state. Or, it used to be. For the first time in 30 years, I took a firearms training course last week. Idaho's population is growing by leaps and bounds. It is said that, in about a year's time, our population will increase to 300,000. In about 5-10 years, we will be as big as Seattle. I've been in Boise since 1984. I once dated a guy from Mountain Home Air Force Base. He broke up with me because he said there was "nothing to do here." Well, in 1985, there wasn't much to do. But we were fine with that. At least we still had our outdoor adventures. Oh, yeah, that's another thing. We can no longer ride our ATVs or motorcycles on trails we have been riding on for as long as we can remember. Another pet peeve. I just want things to go back to the way they used to be. Well, I did learn something in my firearms training. In the state of Idaho, you don't need a concealed weapons permit. I like the fact that I can be Annie Oakley, though, wearing my pistol openly on my hip. It's unfortunate that it has finally come to that, though. I now lock ALL my doors at night, and I now have a guard dog due to a string of rapes and attacks and one lunatic wielding a machete in a local store. Sadly, it has come to this. I want my old Idaho back.

      All I know is that our once little community began to change because of people moving in and changing them. And Californians wonder why Idahoans don't like them. Stop moving here and changing things! We were FINE with the way things used to be! If I want clovers to grow in my front yard, then let me grow clovers in my front yard! If I want to park a boat in my driveway, then let me park my boat in my driveway (why should I have to pay for storage of my boat when I have space on the side of my garage where I can store it?!). If I want to have a yard sale, I want to be able to do it when it's convenient for ME, not when the entire subdivision has it on ONE DAY of the year. They actually discourage individual family yard sales, which I think is asinine. I'm an Idaho native, born and bred. I shouldn't HAVE to conform to California laws!

      So long as immigrants keep on over flooding the mayor cities in Idaho nothing will change. Used to live in Meridian until the mid 2000's where things started to get pretty bad. Hopefully people start doing something about this and slowly recover the state's culture lost over time.

Same with city people who move to the rural areas and bring all the crime and stupid behavior WITH THEM that they ran from,,,,namely their Irresponsible BRATS. sad.

      Jason Rondeau most of the top tier states get more money from the federal government then they pay in aka welfare states, whereas the lower tiwr states, which are predominantly dem states pay more in to fed government then they get in return. As long as states get more from the fed government, they will be better to retire in.
      All this will be adversely effected when austerity through tax cuts cause the fed government to severly cut money paid out to these welfare states.

      Those statistics are deceptive because they consider social security and military pay to be a state getting money from the federal government, when in fact those two items should be removed from the equation because they follow the individual and are the direct result of working for a living.

    I would wanna retire somewhere in SoCal close to a beach. Don't wanna deal with hurricane season in FL. NV is probably a little to hot and dry for my taste. I'm surprised to see AR on the worst list, isn't it just like NV? I'm from NY, and unless you have your own home in a quiet back street someplace like Queens or Brookyln, then it's a bad place to retire.

    This article proves that statistics can be twisted to support any position. Yesterday there was a survey showing VT,NH,Ma, and Maine as the safest states. I am 73 years old,and been retired since 2005,I live in western Ma. I think my priorities are pretty much main stream. Safety,healthcare,public services,entertainment and leisure activities. I haven't found a better place to live than where I am now.I came here from NJ,spent alot of time in NC,WV, and Va.,but nothing beats the Berkshires.

Apart from a few good people, and I stress a few, it sucks lime hell with its high rents, and unless you're like right across the street from a mall or have a dearly new car, good luck getting around. If you're retired, that means you're likely old, that translate to don't get sick once, or you'll live in a hospital thereafter. Oh and good luck with a reason able car or house note.
