A great country rocking classic from my childhood. I didn’t know at the time that they were from Great Britain. They should have had more hits. That’s all.
The UK boy who wrote this said it was intended to be a narrative of a Confederate soldier headed by home. But listeners in the USA assumed it was anti Viet Nam. A song about a war back in the 60s, but the 1860s not 1960s.
When Confederate troops went home, they didn’t get papers and pay. Just the tattered clothes on their backs. Maybe a parole slip as they walked home after the surrender at Appomattox Court House. Also nobody would take their place as stated in the song. Maybe a union soldier would be headed home with papers and pay while the war was still going on but not confederate unless he deserted.

Jeff Christie wrote this and gave it to The Tremeloes, who recorded it but later didn't want to release it, despite knowing it was a potentially big hit. Jeff took it back, recorded over the Tremeloes recording and released it and it became a big hit Bet Tremendous regretted their decision later on.
Me remembers this song I am soon to be 68 so I remember the song. I will give you a Kicker to this and other songs. If you will notice it is slightly under 3 minutes. Many songs of the era were like this due to time constraints by the FCC. Today people would blow up due to creativity being restricted.

Great song. Typical of a young man serving in the military in war time and about to go home. Many a young man, a returning veteran, will look forward to going back to “Yellow River” with high expectations. Too often, the returning veteran discovers that during the 3-4 years he was gone, the world that he remembered has changed and moved on. The girl that he knew is now married and mother of two. He tries to get his old civilian job back but the place he worked for went out business. Non-veterans may see the returning veteran as competition for jobs and girls in the community. The mother and father may also be as harsh and urge their son to make it on his own for “ your uncle Bob came home from Korea, found a job, a wife and made it in his own.” A returning veteran expects to be looked up to and looked after when he returns. Too often that doesn’t happen.

It can be even worse and have their own actually look down on them as happened to the VN veterans. What happened to loyalty? They all fought for a cause; put their lives on the line which some lost. Usually young and maybe immature but they should be honoured. Of course they should. Some survivors saw things that no-one should ever have to see. If we (the human race) want to stop the wars the first thing we must do is stop over-breeding. A mixture of things there to blame aside from the obvious.
