    Part 1 of 2. Classic Game Room HD reviews the Hyperkin RETRON 3. Part 2 here • Classic Game Room - RE... This is a video game console that plays Super Nintendo SNES, Nintendo 8-bit NES and 16-bit Sega Genesis video games. It even has S-Video (which works for Genesis and SNES) as well as standard composite video. The Retron3 comes with 2 wireless controllers which are acceptable for NES games but have poor Genesis button mapping. More importantly though, the Retron 3 allows you to play with your original controllers for Genesis, NES and SNES!! Now, that's a feature!! This CGR review of the Hyperkin Retron 3 shows gameplay from several video games including Gaiares on Genesis, Ultraman on SNES and Zanac on Nintendo Entertainment System NES. This video shows the s-video quality of the Hyperkin Retron3 compared to a modified Sega Genesis Model 1 and demonstrates the audio quality. Video quality is very impressive and audio is not bad, although it lacks some of the dynamics that the original Genesis produces. Overall performance was awesome and CGR thinks that this console should not be overlooked when shopping for replacement old school systems. Flexibility, quality and original controller compatibility make the Retron 3 a bombastic classic video game console.

    I watched this review almost two weeks ago. As a result of having watched this, I bought a Retron 3. It paid off in every respect possible, and even enhanced the graphics of my NES games through S-Video.
    Poor ol' Lord Karnage must've gotten axed on said NES issue, as his NES slot only worked through RCA cable. I have a feeling it's the S-Video cable provided with his system as the S-Video cable included with the Retron 3 is terrible. It didn't even work for me, it easily slipped out of my S-Video coupler. Instead, I used some S-Video cable I already had, in order to work the system.
    I noticed some people are having trouble booting some of their hardware. I formerly had that problem before I learned how to clean the cartridge with only a Q-Tip and water. I'll post a video on that the next time I buy a cartridge, and maybe that'll fix your problems.
    All in all, my review of the Retron 3 is highly praising, as it fixed my problem with non-functional NES cartridges and got me an S-Video based Genesis system. The SNES games work just as well as my SNES, and a little better at that.

    I do have such console for years now...
    It's called a small PC connected to the TV via HDMI cable. In addition to PC I do have 4x USB dualshock gamepads. On my PC I do have emulators of PS1, PS2, N64, SNES, NES, Genesis, Megadrive. And the PC can by itself play most of Xbox and 360 games (cause they're ofter relesed for PC). I will add, that I do own those consoles and I do have tons of physical games for them. They're secured in my room. PS2 is exepction- I love it so it will stay near TV.

    The major setback that causes me to avoid getting one is the sound chip used with the NES games. It's the most obvious when you play Mario games, that they sound VERY different compared to the original hardware. It's a minor complaint to some, but for me, it's major.

    • @jugador398
      @jugador398 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon X MacLennan Yeah. Mario's signature Power Up and Jump sounds are way different. That's not supposed to happen! If you think that's bad, the Super Nintendo sound chip (on mine, anyway) has a major distortion problem, and any game u play sounds like a Rob Zombie death metal concert lol

      Really? Dayum!
      I only know about the Retron's soundchip thanks to Proton Jon's Random Streams. He played Mario 1, 2 and 3.

    • @jugador398
      @jugador398 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jon X MacLennan not to mention once the games are in the system they get stuck in there, cuz the retron 3 doesnt have an eject buttonor anythin and u risk damaging the cartridges cuz u gotta really YANK em out. screw that!

    • @jonhikarizx3631
      @jonhikarizx3631 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Genesis cartridges being the exception. No single Genesis model has an eject button (not even the SNES look alike, Model 2).

    Listening to Mark is soothing, like I'm hanging out with my older brothers back in the day when I would watch them play video games. Mark, I live in Erie, PA, 2 hours from Pittsburgh. I think my wife and I should come over and form a good relationship with you guys. I'll wax all your arcade cabinets, clean all the stickers off your used games, and run my hands over all of the amazing game hardware you own. I won't give you any of my own stuff, though- that's bullshit dude.

      @vaccumsealed 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've been interested in buying the 5th gen, but for 140 bucks, I think I'd be happier with a gen 3 for around 50 dollars simply because I'm more interested in the nes, super, and Sega purposes of gameplay. Why? The wires. The wires covering the floor all around the entertainment center are an absolute pain especially if you have modern day systems included on the same t.v. in your mancave. I have a game boy and 3ds, so none of those deal with the mess of wires you have to deal with on the nes, super, and sega consoles, so the fact the retron 5 plays portable games as a bonus isn't quite worth the extra 100 bucks. Perhaps if the retron 5 played 64 games then it would have more of my attention and $$$. Retron 3 seems to be the best outta 5.

    I just got mine yesterday. It's pretty nifty! The Genesis S-video output looks awesome on my HDTV. And yes, the Genesis version of Virtua Racing does not work with this console. Now I have to get some Mega Drive games, NES, SNES, and Super Famicom games for it. BTW the O/J switch on the back is the Genesis/Mega Drive region switch so you can play Japanese Mega Drive games on it. My Genesis 6-Pak game will not work in Japanese mode because it is region-locked.

    I just bought one of these bad boys a few weeks ago. It's an awesome addition that you can use the original controllers with their respective consoles. So far, it's more of a 6 in one, but I haven't been able to use a Famicom game, a 32X or a Power Base Converter to test any theories. BTW, the wireless controllers work for shit! :(

    • @BanjoAndConkerDDR
      @BanjoAndConkerDDR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because this console is specifically for the US market, and SCART is a European format, it's very hard to find an American television that has SCART output.

    • @JHEntertainment98
      @JHEntertainment98 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bavarian Blood So use a scart to hdmi or scart to component adapter. Wait they have actual been some U.S TV'S that support scart? Which one?

      Bavarian Blood I live in America and I have all my old Retros connected with scart RGB. Its the only true way to play retros on new flat screen tvs. Its very easy to do and find all the connections needed with Ebay. its worth every single penny. I love playing the systems now with RGB and the XRGB mini. And ya i laughed when i heard S video and not RGB....

    2. adapt the wii sensor bar to a USB cable, its not that hard to do, windows will then recognize it as a mouse.

  • @Zycyzyx

    There's a quirky additional restriction with S-video. Just having it connected to your TV while playing NES games through composite does weird things with the video output, basically meaning you can't keep both plugged in. I can understand their need to cut costs; but that's just odd.
    I also noticed the volume output varied wildly between systems, with Genesis being the quietest and the SNES being the loudest by far. Again, odd.
    Still a nifty gadget, though... gotta love that US/JP switch.

    I wonder if the internal hardware is half assed and full of cut corners so the console only lasts for maybe a year before it craps out. I mean, if you compare the insides of a VCR made in the 80s with one made in 2000s. You'll notice a huge difference.

    @rourin I love the games and systems of yesteryear but I guess if you didn't grow up with them they can sometimes be hard to relate to! for a younger gamer used to regular save points and regenerative health classic games can often be frustrating and hard! they rarely told you if you were doing something wrong and that would no doubt put off lots of younger gamers! these days games tell you everything! classic games often dropped you into the game world and left you to get on with it

    It basically redirects electricity. The amount of time it takes to turn off the system, change the switch, and turn it on is very quick so don't consider this a negative thing. It's just something an owner definitely shouldn't do.

    @cryax2138 you rarely find them outside of the internet.... but some small family run game stores might have one or two for about $50, or atleast thats what the price was for the one a local realtailer was selling it for....

    would be amazing if they could make a console that can play games from every console ever made, though it may be as big as a vacuum tube computer.

    I actually had one of these. Then one night it wanted to set fire to my house when I turned it on. Luckily nothing was burned and the system was killed before it could kill me or anyone in the house.

      ***** I don't know about in stores. I know Ebay and Amazon has a bunch for cheap. But if you do buy it and it starts to emit smoke from the back of the device unplug it and throw it in the trash, then take that trash and set fire to it. That will teach it not to mess with you.

    If they would swap genesis cartridge slot with the SNES the cartridges would be perfect!Smallest cartridge to biggest which is genesis to NES and they would all be easy to get out :3
