The May 1994 "Golden Spike Steam Special" was in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the formation of the first North American transcontinental railroad. Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific Railroad, ceremonially drove the golden "last spike" at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10th, 1869. The Union Pacific Railroad built westward, meeting the Central Pacific at this place and time. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, the UP ran its then-largest operating steam locomotive, Challenger-class 4-6-6-4 no. 3985. On May 7, 1994, the steamer and its unique train of historic streamliner passenger cars, left Cheyenne, Wyoming, on the Overland Route, for festivities in Ogden, Utah. The special met regular freight trains along the way, often pulled by C40-8, C41-8W, SD60M and SD40-2 diesels (including 80 mph SD40-2H units). Note that the steam engine operated without "protection power." Instead of being an ornament in front of a diesel-powered train, no. 3985 pulled its own, with all the smoke and chuffing to show that it was working.

I know those two F-units diesels. 8:37 They were from the Wyoming and Colorado Railroad and sold to the Verde Canyon Railroad in Arizona.
Yes, I had heard that as well. Some time in '96, I believe.
@@WaltLoevyActionTrainVideos Yes, and to my opinion, I think the bald eagles on the sides of the F-units make excellent finishing touches to the Verde Canyon paint scheme.

Wonderful shots of 3985. Too bad they retired it. I sure wish they'd run 4014 like that ,without the diesel helper. Is it a new reg., or just UP policy?
I'm sure UP will tell you that they're hands are tied, but I'm not so convinced.
