    Poppies, the world's favorite wildflower and perennial glamour in the garden. There's no flower gardener who doesn't want the beauty of these fabulous flowers in their garden and they're remarkably easy to grow.
    First, you need to know there are both annuals and perennials in this group. Annuals first, it's a deep red annual that's the most popular flower in the world since it's the one that goes by the common names of Flanders Poppy and the American Legion Poppy. It has those names because of World War One.
    This famous wildflower is one of the easiest in the world to grow and you'll love it like everyone else does. The seed is tiny, and it prefers alkaline, not acid soils. That's the only requirement. Be sure your soil is not heavily acid and you'll have a flood of red poppies in early summer if you plant them in fall or spring.
    If you do have heavily acid soil, add a little lime first, then simply scatter the seeds on the surface, and then press them in for good seed to soil contact. Don't cover them and then water.
    If you want to make this your year of the poppy, choose Poppy Power, our exclusive seed mixture of eight different poppies, including the perennial Oriental poppy. It's one of our most popular mixes and you can plant just a patch or a whole border since you can buy our seeds in any quantity from a packet to a pound. I'm Eric Allen for edenbrothers.com, the seediest place on Earth.

    My oriental poppies are volunteers year-over-year. They root in the denuded soil beneath landscaping stones/rocks under the house eve. I have harvested the pods, captured the hundreds of thousands seeds and wintered them over in my shop to later be broadcast or gifted. Seeds that are swept away from the pods with the wind grow (not well) in the gravel driveway. Still, the small emaciated pods are a source of seeds to be harvested. These flowers are a delight to the eye.

    In Flanders fields the poppies blow
    Between the crosses; row on row,
    That mark our place: and in the sky
    The larks, still bravely singing, fly
    Scarce heard amid the guns below.
    We are the Dead. Short days ago
    We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
    Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
    In Flanders fields.
    Take up our quarrel with the foe:
    To you from failing hands we throw
    The torch; be yours to hold it high.
    If ye break faith with us who die
    We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields. -- by John McCrae (1872-1918)
    a reminder lest we forget...

    • @lucifchristo
      @lucifchristo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the other problem i see here and again it may be different for the oriental variety and such but with somniferum you can almost never transplant them sucesfully or without major stunting issues. this is a very poorly informed video on the subject... seems more of a buisness advert than actual helpful tips....

    • @alliecatnz
      @alliecatnz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not from the area but yes we spread our seeds before frosts... I’m sure this helps germination! Although people could keep the seeds in the fridge for a while before sowing. I’ve also found some are more wind tolerant than others and some will reflower a second time if you deadhead the flowers. Oh and be careful what you wish for because they will self seed throughout the garden! So if you’ve got a certain colour scheme stick with your colour tones as they will cross pollinate between some of the colours so you can end up with all sorts! The war kicked up a lot of soil and dormant seeds so there was a massive flush of poppies afterwards just like if you turn the soil in your garden old buried weed seeds etc will sprout... amazing how long some seeds can stay viable. I sprinkle seed in Autumn or our early winter straight on top of the mulch and most germinate just fine! I did like this video I think further information would be on their website maybe although every zone will be different. Here they seem to do well in low fertile areas too and I’ve seed then self seed into concrete pathways.

Just do a search for your local seed suppliers.
