According to the web, Portman was 12 years olde at filming...I could swear I heard her say she was 11 tho...I cannot recall.
This is one of my favorite films ...action, twists & turns ,akward yet touching , great acting. All the major actors killed it !!

Well, films are not made in 1 or 2 days. It takes a while.
Maybe she was 11 when she signed and turned 12 when the actual filming began.

I was mesmerized and stunned by this movie when I first saw it. Not typically my type of movie, but it was so well done. I was drawn in by the superb acting and unusual plot line. There is no other movie like this.

These where the other ones: Morgan Freeman, "The Shawshank Redemption"; Tom Hanks, "Forrest Gump"; Nigel Hawthorne, "The Madness of King George"; Paul Newman, "Nobody's Fool"; John Travolta, "Pulp Fiction." With Tom Hanks winning. So he was better than Tom Hanks? Best Supporting Actor that year? Tommy Lee Jones, "The Fugitive".
So in an alternative, there will be people saying that Tom Hanks should have gotten an Oscar.
And it is an award, not a prize.

    • @PygmalionFaciebat
      @PygmalionFaciebat 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@houghi3826 But Tom Hanks was the main character - so that doesnt count. You should have mentioned all the nominated for the supporting actors.
As far i can tell you only mentioned the winner of the best supporting actor. And yes, i get it: Tommy Lee Jones in ''The fugitive'' was really good. At least as good as Gary Oldman in this movie.
Besides that - because ''its an award, not a price'' :
Things like ''supporting actor'' isnt with capital letters. Just saying.
But your logic is right : if Tommy Lee Jones wouldnt get the Oscar, people now would complain about it.

My favorite part of the film is when Leon and Matilda are chasing/soaking each other with the squirt gun and bucket of water. It's the first time we see them look happy, or have fun. (Unless the memory game came first, I don't remember.) They've both become so cold and cut off from the world due to their lifestyles. In a strange way they needed each other to not let that consume them.

This is indeed a great film, well written and directed by Luc Besson and a masterclass in acting by
Gary Oldman, Jean Reno and Natalie Portman(so young here); Plus even better we get to see the film
in the company of Emma with a reaction masterclass of her own, full of pathos and feeling; I liked the
part were Emma adroitly conveyed a mixture of fear and emotion as they searched for Mathilda's family.
The face off in the bathroom between Mathilda and Stansfield was intense, and a poignant end as she planted
the plant; And Emma was as always a captivating vision of gorgeous beauty.

There was a blockbuster on at my local multiplex, but we decided to watch Leon, there was me, my wife, then ice cream lady and the popcorn lady, and the four of us watched it together the ice cream lady and the popcorn lady shared with us, it was a memorable way to watch a film, one of my favourites ever, a classic.

I love the movie. I really like the director's cut, which adds nearly a half hour of additional content, including more lessons on "cleaning". He gets actively involved, and it's in those scenes that we first see her wearing the outfit that copies Léon's style. She even proves that she does a more thorough job. The most dramatic scene in my mind is one that was actually cut from this version and is in the director's cut! But even this version is great.

Agreed. She was confused seeing them in the same bed. However, if she watched the full film, then she would understand the context of that scene. I can only watch the longer version now. It's the real film, IMO.

Looking forward to your reaction to "Amelie" now. If you are into French movies a bit, that one is great.
It's filmed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who is great. It was filmed in the 2000s but it happens in Paris in the 90s (1997 to be precise, the death of Diana is kind of a starting point). It really was made for French people but still is a great watch for international viewers. If it seems weird, don't worry: it was for us too (at first, now it's kind of a national treasure).

There was going to be a sequel to this movie called: Mathilda the Professional
It was going to be about Matilda when she is older taking Leon's place as new assassin.
Production was delayed because the filmmakers waited for Natalie Portman to get older.
Then Luc Besson focused on other projects and made his new company called EuropaCorp.
Luc Besson lost the rights for the film, because the executives stayed at Gaumont Film Company.
The script was used for another other movie starring Zoe Saldana called Columbiana which wasn't a sequel to Leon.
To bad. It could have been one hell of a movie.

1996... Me and a friend sit in my friend's living room. We had planned to play playstation.
When we wanted to take the game CD out of it's case, the CD split. (Yeah, annoying shit)
Obviously, we needed a new plan. We looked at the TV stand and there it was, laying right in front of the TV. Leon the Professionel.
His mom had rented it and it was due to be brought back the next day. So, we took our chances, not knowing anything about what we were getting into.
    Great times. Great movie.

He first came to my attention with Big Blue and that movie had a big effect on me, because I already loved snorkelling and I was playing Underwater Hockey. The movie inspired me to get more into freediving. Leon was a brilliant movie and of course Fifth Element. Kiss of The Dragon is another brilliant movie with Jet Li and Bridget Fonda. I'm not sure if you will review Big Blue or Kiss of The Dragon, but you should at least watch them both.

All Luc Besson movies should be watched! Do two in order... LA femme Nikita, then Leon. Then all Taken series, Transporter series, fifth element, Jupiter rising, big blue, Lucy, and others. Liam did some great 80s movies, Next of Kin, and a movie with Cher, even though he doesn't speak in it, and I think one with Jodie Foster. And spoofs himself in Ted or Ted 2! Also a cool movie about him on a train or plane, one called in the tombstones I think, he really has a good body of work! But ever since he did this, he's been pretty much stuck in the action genre. Which is strange cuz he's like 70 years old! Leon actually came about while filming la femme Nikita. He asked Luc about the hitman character, and what was his background, his life before? That's how The Professional came about! He was also in a movie called Ronin and the first Mission Impossible movie!

Not "La femme Nikita" please, watch the French original version "Nikita", It is so much better with Anne Parillaud, incredible in this so special role.
But before, reading what treatment was imposed on her by Besson to obtain the right to play the character (the physical and mental preparation required by the director before filming) you'll think you're hallucinating!
It was by entrusting the role of "Victor, the cleaner" to Jean Réno that Besson had the idea of dedicating a film to this atypical character (Victor then became Léon, the professional).

The relationship between Tony and Léon is complicated. It's easy to miss (or to misread) what's going on.
My own take, is that what's happening is this:
About 60 percent of it, is Tony has taken financial advantage of Léon: The fact that Léon can't read English, and that Léon is "on the spectrum." (So that Tony is Léon's sole source of income, and is also very likely Léon's only human-to-human social contact (until Mathilda shows up). Léon is a top-level hitman, with genius-level skills. If Léon were being paid what he were actually worth, Léon would be a multimillionaire. (Whether Léon could actually have handled such a lifestyle - he could not have - is a separate question.)
Tony got free use of the money that clients paid for Léon's services, for maybe twenty years. So in practical terms, Tony has stolen maybe 10-15 million (1995) dollars from Léon.
If Tony had really wanted to really help Léon without taking advantage of him, Tony would have set Léon up with one or more tutors so that Léon could learn English. Tony also would have set Léon up with something like a financial manager who was 'on the level' (not merely loyal to Tony), so that Léon would not be financially vulnerable to any exploiter, including Tony.
That's about 60 percent of the relationship. The other 40 percent, is different. Léon, as a young kid, immigrated to America with a criminal past (having avenged his girlfriends' murderer in Italy). Tony took Léon in, as part of "the tribe" and saw it as his personal responsibility to look after Léon - so Tony set Léon up as a hitman 'service provider' for Tony's network, and it worked out very well because Léon became so good at his job. At some level, I think Tony knows that if Léon had full control of his own money, that Léon would either misuse it, or would use it carelessly - in a way that would likely get Léon caught and imprisoned by the authorities (which might get Tony in trouble as well). So, Tony "runs" Léon's financial life, as the easiest way of dealing with the problem.
I don't think that Tony actually has any of Léon's money. I think Léon's money has long-since been spent, either for guns and ammo that Tony needs, or for payoffs to people like Stansfield. This would normally not fly in the criminal underworld, but Tony is counting on the fact that 1) Léon is not only dysfunctional with money and finances (and so would never check for himself) and 2) that Tony is in a power position over Léon (both socially and economically) and both men know this. Tony DOES miss Léon, and wants to help Mathilda (whom Léon cared about) to the extent that he can. The best way that Tony can actually do this, is by doing what he did: to discourage Mathilda away from a "Cleaner's" lifestyle, and to send her out of the neighborhood, where she'll have some chance to grow up with non-criminals and to have a normal(ish) life.

I used to think that as ell. But the more I see it and the older I get, I see him as honest to his friends. Léon spoke English.Buying off the cops was not an option at that moment. Léon does not care for the money. That is not why he does it. So a mutual agreement that he keeps the money is the best solution. And from a movie perspective it also makes more sense, as we see that he does the job NOT because of the money. But he also is not a psycho who does it just for the killing.
So I do believe he has Léons money. He probably has so much, he can easily pay him twice, without noticing anything. I do believe that Tony is just the standard Mafia person with a restaurant as a front. Probably well connected. He is not a standard middle man between the Mafia and Léon.

@@houghi3826 I appreciate your response. We agree on these points:
      - Yes, buying off the cops was not an option, when Stansfield came to confront Tony. (Tony's battered face, in later scenes, implies that Tony's impulse to protect Leon kicked in, even during that lose-lose situation, and that Stansfield's men had to beat the information out of Tony.)
      - Correct, Leon doesn't care for the money (for himself); that's not why he does the work.
      - Correct, that Leon is not a psycho.
The one moment in the film that communicated to me, unmistakably, that Tony doesn't have Leon's money, is the moment when Leon directly asks Tony TO DO SOMETHING SPECIFIC with Leon's money (to give it to Mathilda, if a condition arises ((if Leon is killed)).) How does Tony react, at that moment? ••He avoids eye contact and looks away•• (darting his eyes to several places within a few seconds (while SAYING, "you got it, Leon.") To me, this is a dead giveaway: Tony's lack-of-eye contact and body language clearly communicate that Tony is lying. (If Tony were instead being truthful in that moment, then he would have looked Leon squarely in the eyes while answering him.)
Is Tony lying that he has the money, when he really doesn't? Or, is Tony lying that he intends to give the money (that he's holding in safe keeping) to Mathilda?
I don't think that Tony has any incentive to lie, if Tony really does have a pile of money sitting there, belonging to Leon, and if Leon wants Mathilda to have it (if something happens to him). That's because Tony •really does care• for Leon, and would want to respect Leon's wishes, to the extent that he can. By process of elimination, that tells us that Tony doesn't have Leon's money, and hasn't had it for many years. (If things had worked out differently, and Leon had survived, and had gone to Tony and DEMANDED his money, Tony most likely would have put him off for a bit, saying something like "it'll take me a few days to get the money out of where I have it." In reality, Tony would have had to pull/divert the money out of other parts of the operation (or, less likely, would himself be driven to have Leon killed, to clear away the possibility of Leon coming after him.)

@@tranya327 Pretty much my take as well, but I would say that Tony "invested" most of the money into his wider Mafia businesses/fronts. There would obviously be payoffs to officialls to keep his cleaning business a secret. Tony basically gives Leon exactly he amount of money he needs for expenses, on top of suppling him with weapons and ammo.
Leon is likely autistic and likely has a very vague concept of money and what to do with it, only that it is a source of security for him (in the sense that he 'has money' and Tony keeps it) and that he in the ends want transferred to Mathilda, to help protect her.

i hope you went with the longer cut of the movie, as the US theatrical version of Leon isn't as good.
if you ever get round to watch The Big Blue also featuring Reno it's harder to pick which version to watch the theatrical release has a more art house feel while the directors cut has a fair amout more dialogue, i love both cuts of the movie for different reasons

It's actually not so unusual to meet people on the secret side. I was trained to shoot by a former hitman in 2007. In the USA. At first it's off-putting to meet someone who has actually ended people, but eventually you get used to it. They're just people. Like meeting celebrities. Once you meet enough you start feeling like it's just normal. When you've been there yourself (celebrity, not offing people) you start to think of it as just another thing that people do to pay the bills. We're all just people. I even passed along the marksmanship training to my friend's son. It's just a thing people do. I know it's weird to normalize it, but it is pretty normal. Happens everywhere.
