- We are taking our RV into a state of emergency and have no idea what to expect. Shortages of food, fuel and basic resources are our biggest concern. This episode takes place in Albuquerque, NM as we travel in our RV towards the solar eclipse.
It's hard to prepare for these shortages living in an RV because of space considerations. Where can we store extra supplies and not put ourselves at risk for being overloaded in the RV? Join us on today's drama packed episode as we navigate these concerns!

Did I hear an East Texas slam? As a resident of East Texas, we really like it here. We garden year around, we have more than plenty wild pigs and deer to put in the freezer, our pantries are filled with pressure canned, dehydrated and freeze dried food. It's a preparedness paradise in East Texas. As an emergency manager, we like seeing people being or getting prepared for whatever hazard comes their way, but watching people talk about the eclipse and end of the world makes us chuckle.
If people would Read the Bible, they would Know how this world is going to End. Didn't watch the "Comical Chaos". Could of cared less!!!
I just don't understand why everyone was "stocking up resources" for a freaking 4 minute event!
When the economy is down, present fear and people will stock up by buying shit.
Exactly
I totally conquer
If you live there, you didnt need to, but if you are traveling in an RV, and thousands of other people are traveling in their RVs, and with Easter and the influx of thousands more people coming in for the eclipse - there are more people shopping in a specific store than there normally are....those stores run out, the gas stations run out, there are lines at dump stations and water stations. So wise people plan ahead and make it so they dont have to go to those places during those times.
everyone has lost there mind lol
stepped out in the driveway leaned against the truck and watched the whole thing, best one I've seen the other two were partials. This one the birds even got quiet like they had gone to roost. Talked to my sister in Arkansas the whole time. Thanks for sharing Hanks.
We got 99% total eclipse here at the house. My boss let us work thru lunch and leave at 2:00 so we could all get home in time. Traffic going north was horrible. It was backed up past my house until 9 pm.
That is so great that you were able to see it!
We saw the eclipse on US 90 in Texas between Uvalde and Brackettville with no traffic and crowds.
Glad y'all got to see it! We can't wait to share our entire experience with it all!
My dads house was in the total eclipse zone in 2017. I took my husband and kids, set up a tent in his backyard to spend the night in. The weather was perfect and we had fun with all of the gadgets the guys in our family put together to watch and track the eclipse. Some of the best pictures were of the shadows from the trees.
What a great experience for you and your family 😊
I remember the shadows from the trees. That was so cool.
We were at the Texas Motorplex this time. No trees anywhere. The clouds cleared out just in time for the corona. So amazing.
Y’all are so funny. I loved it. I knew that grocery bill was going to be 500.+ Hanks you’re awesome. ❤❤❤
Thank you very much 🤗
Hey guys, always enjoy the weekly videos. Around the 3:45 mark in the video picked up a flashback to the Sopranos intro, not sure if intentional or not, except Renee wasn't smoking a big ol' stogie! 😀. Take care and safe travels.
We had 4 mins of totality in Plattsburgh, NY.
It was incredible
Agreed. We were in Lake Placid at John Brown’s Farm. It was just incredible.
We were in the totality in 2017…and you are right! It was absolutely amazing!
We were in Niagara Falls. So cool! Never experienced anything like that in my life
Akron Ohio we had 3 min of totality
So glad you got to see it, Diane! What an amazing experience
I live in Texas and had no idea people were worried. It was really cool though!
So glad you got to experience it!
Living in Ottawa Ontario, I only had to drive an hour south-east to Cornwall to be well inside the path of totality! Sat along the St. Lawrence River with mostly clear skies above - it was amazing!!
So glad you were able to see it!
I like the your reality approach to RVing. Whereas, others might tend to show only the good parts you show the reality of both pleasure and the drudgery.
Thank you so much!
Holy Costco!! $500?? Gluttony Hanks, gluttony. 😂😂
God Bless Dexter. I can’t imagine traveling anywhere with our two cats. They get car sick and the smell of vomit and poop while you’re truckin’ down the road is 🤮.
You guys are the best. We hope to see y’all down the road sometime!!
I understand your hesitation to make extra holes. As a ham radio operator I have a weather proof cable pass through. I am able to pass feedline and Hotspot external antenna through.
Just an option.
Thank you for sharing this :)
Great video and well prepped. We also watched the eclipse but was in Arkansas. Then we hit a snag , a gas leak on the truck. So we channeled the Thanks Hanks attitude of can do. Took a breath, tackled one thing at a time and resolved the issue. So thank you for showing us how to react to a situation without totally losing it! You two rock!
I want to see how you fit all that stuff in your RV! PLEASE! We just got a 5th wheel in December and I get nervous shopping afraid I can’t fit everything I bought lol😂
It is such a balancing act! You get really creative on where you can store things 😁 Thank you for your support!
We spent the time with our daughter and her family in Waco, and had a wonderful eclipse in the backyard! The clouds parted (literally) minutes before totality! Then it was clear viewing. Glad you had fun!
I've stopped in Oregon for a month, ain't now way I was going to be in that area for the eclipse. I've had my ''once'' in a lifetime back in the 70's with my classmates, I'm good!
Been a truck driver for 20 years. Spent a lot of time on the I 40. Cant wait to hook my RV and travel for leisure and get a chance to explore places I have been in a truck., love watching you guys hope to see y"all on the road! Love to pick your brain I have a ton of full timer questions. TTFN
We hosted about 25 campers at our property in Indiana. Beautiful skies. Met people from North Dakota, Minnesota, Texas, Washington DC, Illinois, Michigan, and Alabama. It was a fun time by all!!!! Traffic in East Central Indiana wasn't bad either.
Hope you enjoyed East Texas! Eclipse was great, but the crowds were not what were expected. pretty sure the weather interfered. Love to watch you. Wish our lives had been where we could have RVed at your age, but we are enjoying it now. But keeping our home that is paid for. Best of both worlds!
In NC we only saw a portion of the eclipse. It looked like a crescent moon. 🌒 Happy Camping and Safe Travels! 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
Thank you so much! The partial eclipse is still really cool!
Born & raised west side Albuq. We get back once a year and High Desert is our go to park. Happy travels!
Wow you guys were way to worried about thinking of running out of stuff. Living in DFW Dallas area the traffic was not as bad as the news built it up to be leading up to the event. fuel was not an issue. Now there were alot of people walking around it looked like on the local news and a lot of watch parties but getting to the store or gas was not an issue. But it gave me a good laugh and 500 plus at Costco. sometimes that is the norm :-)
We were headed through Texas on our way to Tombstone and Sedona days before the eclipse and were amazed at the number of RV's headed to TX. Have not seen that many RV's on the road before. We were in Sedona for the eclipse and had very little effect. Always enjoy your videos and look for to them each week.
I live in Oregon VERY close to the optimum site to see the 2017 eclipse. For the few weeks prior the news media grotesquely overhyped the potential issues & catastrophes.Little to no issues occurred thru out the State let alone the prime areas. It was a great event & we thoroughly enjoyed.
You are absolutely correct. I-40 in NM is the absolute worst! AZ is OK, TX is very good & OK is spotty at best with good and terrible stretches. Be safe and have fun!
We traveled to Cape Giradeau Mo to see it (131 miles from St Louis area) 3 hr drive there, and 5 hours to get back home. We packed food and drinks for the journey. Totally worth it!
Arizona is Bumpy.
And I can tell you why I'm a truck driver I drive on the tan, the 8 the 15, the 25, the 40 the 70NA80. But love watching you guys
Why are people calling this a " once in a lifetime event", this is the 3rd one I can remember maybe 4th. Then folks acting like it's the end of groceries and fuel, come on. It's an eclipse no big deal. Love yalls shopping. Makes me feel better about going to Sam's Club. We don't have a Costco close by.
My husband and I went to see the eclipse in Oregon back in 2017. It took us 2 hours to get there and almost 6 to get back home. It was amazing but traffic was crazy packed.
Went from Long Beach ,CA to Russellville,AR. Hit a 40-50 mile traffic jam going back out of AR. Totally worth it! Finding places to stay was difficult, but made lots of friends along the way.
Hello happily ever hanks - we are loyal followers - we are currently travel in our 2015 22’ Roadtrek from the west coast of Fla to Cape Cod (our main home) - on the way we passed many Bucees- so we couldn’t resist and stopped in. It was amazing!!! We bought a magnet and will smile whenever we look at it❤ Thank you. Travel on
Go up North to Taos and Red River in New Mexico
We watched the eclipse and 2017. Lots of people that wasn't bad.
Course, we're in Boise Idaho, and we live here, so we just drove there watched it and drove home.☺️ Loving all your videos you guys do.💕
Very convenient! We love Boise. Thank you so much!
I saw it in Columbus, Ohio and it wasn't bad here.
We live in Temple, TX...ground zero for "Totality"...it was a big nothing burger in regards to crowds of people and running out of necessities. Total eclipse was truly worth experiencing...we had broken clouds but they parted just right to see the total eclipse. Maybe larger metro areas such as Austin, San Antonio, Dallas etc. had more problems but we were blessed to dodge the crowds.
The traffic after the eclipse was HORRIBLE. I traveled 9 hours to my spot for the eclipse and it took me 15 hours to get back home (split over 2 days)
It was so worth it though! I'd do it again. I wonder if those people who said they were heading away from the eclipse have ever experienced one in totality?! If not, they don't know what they are missing!
Can't wait to see what your experience was like! This was my 2nd one and it still blew my mind and brought me to tears!
LOL - some people prep for a special day. Others of us prepare as if there will be an event tomorrow! 🤣
AND??
Kewpie sesame is the absolute best dressing ever! I got hooked on it when living in Japan.
The eclipse was awesome and I got to watch it completely from my yard in southern Illinois. Our town of Harrisburg was right in the path.
It was so awesome and I'm in NB Canada and we had a total and it was wild. It got so dark and cold and the wind picked up and the birds went wonky flying low around the yard. I was lucky and it was right over the house so I watch on the porch. It was a once in a life time as it was a total eclipse. Stay safe
Wasn't that just an incredible experience? We are so glad you got to experience it!
The key to the wind gust is you have to drive really fast so it can't get you. I mean really fast. I love how RV parks are graded so well that you have to use mountain-est leveling blocks to get level with auto-level. I spend 400-500 every month just on meat at Costco.
Fun video guys! We actually stumbled into the path of a total eclipse last October in Gallup, New Mexico. We were heading back to San Diego for the winter and had booked a few days at the USA Campground in Gallup. When we got there a friend let us know we were in the path of totality. It was really cool to experience!! Y'all are gonna have a great time. Safe travels!!
We flew into Houston from CA. Drove to a very nice RV park in Uhland TX (near Kyle TX) and stayed in one of their very nice cabins (visited a Bucees on the way - no shortage of supplies). Next day we drove to Buda, TX to a very nice soccer park to watch the eclipse. Really not all that many people at the park, no traffic congestion at all, and no food or fuel issues at all. Although it was cloudy, we kept getting breaks in the clouds so we were able to see most of the phases leading to totality. At about 90% of totality the cloud got very thick and I thought that was going to be it for us. However, just before totality, right as "The Diamond Ring" phase displayed, the clouds parted and we got to see right through to totality. After that, everyone left in a very organized way and we did not have any problem driving back to Kyle. Stopped at a Bucees in New Braunfels on our way back to Houston the next day and they had plenty of food and treats. Perhaps it was the cloud cover that kept viewership down. Hope you enjoyed your experience as much as we did ours!
We went up to Ashtabula Ohio ,sat on the beach of Lake Erie. Was amazing, had people from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, even had one from Cali. Was a party on the beach, the tugs and cargo ships all laid onnthe air horns and everyone cheered and clapped, was definitely an experience worth the trip. Traffic was nasty leaving, took 2 hours longer to go a usual hour drive. Worth it
Live in Akron Ohio perfect day watched it on my back porch. Our seasonal campsite opened early and we camped the weekend I just wanted to organize and left Monday morning. I will say our campground filled up with a lot of people from out of town
My family went up to Lorain, Oh.
We were in Wooster, Ohio.
Monroe, oh.👍👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Yikes on the traffic part! But what a cool experience!
We had just over 1 minute of full eclipse at our house in 2017 in east Tennessee. We had friends over, grilled food, had beer, it was a great day. 2024 was a wash out, literally, it rained all day.
We took the RV to the Texas Hill Country west of Austin. It was the biggest non-event event of the century. The crowds were really small and no traffic. it was cloudy but the clouds parted enough that we had a great view.
I live in the path and it was totally okay here plenty of groceries and also plenty of gas. Hope you enjoyed your time here.
Don't forget to add a little 'Star Brite Star Tron' gas fuel stabilizer to that jug. Gasoline begins to destabilize and turn a pale yellow honey color as it goes bad. Six months from now your fuel in the generator and jug can cause rough running and difficult starts. My wife and I viewed the totality from northern New Hampshire. Wow!
Good call! I carry some fuel stabilizer and add it regularly. We are so glad you got to see the totality 😊 Thank you for your support!
Love watching the Hanks, such a cute couple and love Dexter. We drove our Class B van from CT to North New Hampshire to view the 2024 eclipse. The sun and moon put on a fabulous 2 minute eclipse show of total darkness where we could see the diamond ring effect, Bailey’s beads, the corona, stars; the temperature dropped, birds were silent. The worst part was the estimated 3 hour commute to our Harvest Host destination. Traffic was bumper to bumper, at a standstill or 2 mph speed. It looked as if we might spend the night on the highway. The traffic was so slow that people were getting out of their cars to urinate in the snow banks and forest along the highway. We were so lucky to be in our van , with a toilet. Well, it was 10 hours total travel time before we arrived at our destination at 2am. Long commute but some great memories.
In 2017 the county I live in was in the center of the total eclipse path (totality) and it was pretty amazing! This eclipse was very uneventful for us. I didn't even go outside until it was over.
I hope you guys go a good view. It was nice that the sky broke open at our place for the few minutes of totality.
I play the Costco guessing game with my kids every single time we check out😂
We used to use two carts going through Sams club one a shopping cart and one the flat dolly cart, fill up the back of the truck and we would be stocked up for a while depending on how many kids stayed over of my children's friends. Food bill was as bad as a mortgage.
even at the end of a bad day..( like today) you two always put a smile on my face....after an entire year of checking out all the "RV TH-cam creators", and meeting some at RV Shows, you two by far are the best. I hope to catch up with you one day on the road:)
Ẃe were on Lake Whitney close to Waco. No big crowds. Clouds broke for the eclipse and we got to see it all, amazing.
We got to go camping for four days at Geneva on the Lake Ohio and it was 100% totality. It was awesome.
After the episode where you introduced Dotties pretzels we went a couple of days later to my in-laws to visit. About half way through our visit my mother-in-law said "Do you like cinnamon?" I replied that I did. She then produced a bag of Dottie's Cinnamon pretzels! I was such a happy camper. I told her about your episode and just seeing this product for the first time. She sent me home with the remainder of the bag! YUM!
Hello Hanks! We love watching your videos! Some day we will see you out on the road! It was fun watching you shop in our Costco in Albuquerque, we live very close to the west-side Costco where you shopped.
We watched your Alaska videos very carefully as we had towed our 34" 5th wheel to Alaska this past summer :) We happened to be in Seward during the earthquake and tsunami warning while you were on the west side of Kenai peninsula. Our trip was opposite of yours as we went north through Bnaff and Jasper up to the Alcan and then came south on the Stewart Cassier down through Vancover BC.
We wish happy travels to the 3 of you! ( My wife said we will be taking our 2 cats this year with us)
Dan and Kris
We have the same pole buddy! Here is a suggestion! I have mounted it as low to the upper ladder loop as i can so it still can search for signal. I travel with out taking Dishy down. I coil the wire up and attach to the bike. I also keep the modem in the basement near the Nautilus and run wire through the hose knockout.
We are in Carlsbad, we drove to Gatesville, TX to a friends about 6 hour drive. Saw the eclipse and drove back. We were in totality there and we saw the comet to the left at about 10 o'clock position. The whole eclipse was awesome. Glad we got to go see it. On to Big Bend next.
We just happen to be traveling through northern Texas on our way back from the cruise with the today is someday crew and our nephew owns a 500 acre ranch about 30 miles west of Tyler. So, we swung in for a couple days and saw the eclipse with clear skies and zero traffic. It was pretty cool. We had lived in central California when the last one came and although we did experience some of the eclipse, we weren’t in the totality path as we were this year
We drove 2600 miles from Washington State with stops to visit family to get to Waco Tx and experience totality with my Dad. EPIC! Several more stops on the way back including a cruise. Did not bring the 5th wheel though, not enough time and didn't plan enough ahead. Regardless it has been a great trip so far.
Hey Renee, I saw you at the office when we were checking in!! Thanks for the visit - and thanks for your videos!!
It’s actually good having diesel. Living in Florida when everyone “panic” buys during hurricane season. The gas runs out long before diesel does.
In the DFW area, I understand hotels and car rentals were scarce, but that’s about it. Everything else was as normal.
We watched the eclipse from my back yard in Frisco. I installed 50 amp service for curb parking. You could have joined us, easy peezy, ha. Just about 7 days late on that offer.
Hey! you want to have a good time ? Here in Louisville Kentucky on April 20 There will be an airshow and the best fireworks show you find in north america! The derby is two weeks later on first saturday in May ! This takes place every year! But this year is a little special, because this year is the 150 th running of the Kentucky Derby!
Oh nice! Wish we could be there for an event like that!
more than welcome to come to this its mostly free@@HappilyEverHanks
Tune to WDRB CHANNEL 41 locally, Louisville to watch the last of the air show “AND” and fireworks!!!!
Fireworks starts at 9:00 pm
We saw the total eclipse from Starve Hollow Campground in Indiana. We had 3 minutes and 11 seconds of totality. When the moon completely covered the sun, it actually got darker than I thought it would. I've been on Interstate 40 and Albuquerque many times. The I-10 and I-20 trip between El Paso and Dallas, TX is a horrible long boring drive.
I went to Indiana and traffic was light and no issues. I took my class c and no waiting at the fuel pump for diesel. It was a breeze just like back in 2017. 👍
I live in Oregon. They were hyping it up saying we were gonna have so many people in nobody showed up.They were saying are small town of 9000 people. We're gonna have like two hundred and fifty thousand people in it but we only had nine thousand.
Really enjoy watching you guys.. don’t own an RV yet but retiring early 2025 and plan to work towards the Alaska trip. must have been pretty anticlimactic after all the news worrying everybody about things not working…
Another great video I was in Nashville for the 2017 eclipse wasn't that bad sometimes I don't understand people in the south when it snows and you get an inch on the ground, everybody runs to the grocery store and buys bread, milk and eggs. They will clean those sections out, not sure why and you're only in your house at the most 2 days
I was stuck in east TX for past week (saw total eclipse of the sun) visited 2 Bucees, Costco (originally called "100 buck club") and many other fun locations and stayed with my good friend in her cul-de-sac acre lot
Wow...now that is shopping. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching 🤗
I live in Ennis, Texas 4:30 of totality. It was amazing. Our town is prepared for 50K - 100K. Watch parties everywhere, even at Bucees. I live out in the country, so my hubby and I had a great view.
Shucks! I wish I would have seen this sooner! We live in Albuquerque New Mexico. It would have been sooo awesome to meet you guys!! We love watching you all lots! If you come back through this way it would be cool to catch ya!
Niagara Falls!! Got to see it through the clouds…. Amazing
Sister and Brother-in-law were there also. Cloudy…but, oh well…they turned around and …BAM…they got to enjoy Niagara Falls.
I was in Niagara too!! Even with the clouds it was amazing !!
Love Niagara Falls!
Hope you got to see it and the crowd was peaceful. Dont forget the RV show at the dome.
Texas has HEB which is the best grocery store I've been to. Their house brands beat a lot of name brands
Saw this shortly after we got home from our trip to Costco to stock up on supplies for our upcoming trip into Southeast Utah and Northeast Arizona. Not much worried about how many people may be there and buying out the stores but after going through St. George and arriving 10 days later at Flagstaff/Williams we're kind of traversing the no big and not too expensive store zone. Not sure Costco seems less expensive these days. Reminded me I need to pick up some DEF.
Reminds me of the prepping before the LA Olympics in 84. Worst case scenario was the city was going to tie in knots the whole time in one big traffic jam. Was actually not bad.
We were so bummed with how cloudy it was in Southern Ontario. We were in the path of totality and yet couldn't see anything! It was cool to have it get dark midday though.
200K! Congratulations!
Thank you so much!! :)
Hanks, you don’t have to feed your Starlink inside. We leave it connected to the dish always. Router is in the front compartment. Steve feeds it up through the wet bay hole.
We drove to see the total eclipse in Newport Vermont. From central Connecticut to Newport Vermont it took us 4 1/2 hours to get there. So, we got there and went to a Walmart parking lot to watch the eclipse. There were campers there, and they had their slides out. The whole parking lot was completely full. The total eclipse was fascinating to watch. Everyone, including the small kids that were there, cheered when it went to the full eclipse. It was amazing to see. This area did a great job with traffic control by having the police controlling the traffic. Then we had the fun time trying to get to our bed and breakfast in Hanover New Hampshire which is only about an hour and a half away. All the highways, secondary roads and even many of the side roads were just parking lots. It took us over five hours to travel a drive that would normally take an hour and a half to drive. We were on side roads, dirt roads, roads with no names on the map, and all had cars doing the same as we were doing. I got frustrated at one point trying to navigate other roads to take while losing Internet connection for Google maps or Waze that I told my husband to pull over so we can switch drivers. This way he could look and figure out what he wanted to do. He actually ended up using both the Internet and a paper map to get around. When it started to get dark, I told him I was not going to drive on dirt back roads, that there had to be a paved roads with a name on it. We did not have dinner that night because when we get to where our bed-and-breakfast was, either the restaurants were closed or all the fast food places were jammed. Traffic going home the next morning was not much better. Lots of people were on the road but it was moving at times. What complicated everything was several spots along the way where there was construction that backed up traffic for miles. So again, it took forever and a day to get home. I love watching your videos. Visit southern New England sometime.
You picked a great place to park up down in the corner near the picnic table, Clair, you were right, the sunsets were beautiful.
I must be a little ocd! I’ve got to have the steering wheel resting straight when I’m parked up… Andy just left it at an angle…..😮
Every time Calgary Beach was mentioned, I just pictured Calgary 2hrs north of here…! No relation to each other in sure?!
Mozza really likes your dry robe and remarks how warm it looks..
even though it’s raining a lot, I’d still swap places with you both for a week! lol.
Keep it up, enjoy. 👍🚐💨💨
Lol!😂 I did the same thing for our preparation of the eclipse in Paris Texas w/Escapees. My experience in Madras Oregon in 2017 taught or frightened me a bit so we stocked up for the week of the eclipse and all for not since lots of people changed plans due to the forecast. We were so fortunate to see the Totality after all. What an experience and even better with Escapees❤
Watched it all by myself in Western Massachusetts about 3/4 of the sun was blocked temperature cooled down. Probably the last one Oliver see at my age happy trails
I’m not sure if you were joking when you were talking about whether or not you’ll “even make it to your destination,” but I was entertained. Nice video, now you know you don’t have to buy groceries for a long time.
The eclipse was great in Georgetown TX - clouds parted just in time. Been parked at a monthly spot we booked in August.
Holy COW! We were just thinking - where are ya'll gonna put all that! I know you have a 5th wheel but OH MY! We were just slightly jealous though - we live in a truck camper so storage is just a WEE bit smaller, haha! Love your enthusiasm, but we're glad we stayed away from the path of totality for the eclipse.
The Total Eclipse was Amazing in Dallas Fort Worth. ❤
We were in Yantis on Lake Fork. Clouds all around but clear for the entire time up to and through totality and then a cloud blocked the view
Start getting the Def at the truck stops when you get diesel. Even though you have to put it in under the hood, it’s still easier. Plus the pumps will be fresher. You never know how long the stores stock piled it.
Here in SE Texas because of the weather we really didn’t get to see anything. However, we did get to see eclipse in 2017.
Dex is running away from your tuna breath 😊
It was pretty surprising how light traffic was in our area, but the cloudy forecast definitely drove off lots of people!
