Haha! Right now I'm editing a video about dissolving gold in potassium cyanide. But in my case I heated up some potassium hexacyanoferrate with potassium carbonate. However, to obtain cyanogen (dicyan) ONLY pure potassium cyanide is needed! Potassium cyanide from potassium hexacyanoferrate or potassium tetracyanonickelate ISN'T suitable! I synthesized pure potassium cyanide from acetone cyanohydrin and potassium hydroxide. I’ll try to publish this video this year 🤓
I've always wanted to try this route, great video! You could add a strong non-volatile acid and distill the hydrogen cyanide onto KOH, if you want extra pure cyanide. Recrystallization might also be a good idea!
Back in my days as a biochemist and I had access to such substances, I kept a vial of KCN around as an emergency exit, in case things got that bad (I live in a place, like most, where euthanasia is illegal). I switched fields and my escape route degraded. I must now suffer through whatever befalls me in my old (but thankfully not yet that unhappy) age.
Nice video. I am familiar with this method. Apparently you can prevent atmospheric oxidation to cyanate by covering with a layer of charcoal powder before heating. Then simply extract the cyanide with hot water after cooling.
Good prep, man! Also worth mentioning that bleach can also be used for the oxidation of the cyanide (CN) to the cyanate (OCN) if left for a sufficient amount of time (like 24 - 48 hours).
Interesting synthesis! I tried making potassium cyanide from the ferricyanide and potassium carbonate a long time ago, but when heating it I immediately smelled the HCN. So, I stopped and never tried again :D
Cyanide works great for removing gold and silver plating from e waste. It's fairly selective and grabs both metals unlike nitric acid and aqua regia. ❤
Yo cool synthesys I waited so long for this video after you sended spoiler in PB's server with this black chunks in plastic bag Is this synthesys really this long?
It does not take long you could finish it in a single day. I jsut did the first extraction and then forgot about it for a few weeks. If you are careful during the first extraction you don´t even need a second one for the same purity.
Pretty interesting. I've made NaCN/KCN by mixing the K ferrocyanide and Na metal before, I didn't know I could do it without using the sodium metal. Thanks for sharing!
There is slight oxidation so it will contain a small amount of cyanate but this could easily be fixed by adding a small amount of charcoal to the melt.
Interesting, have done this with metallic sodium for mixed alkali cyanide and what I thought was pure iron at the bottom of the crucible. Hadn't considered sodium or potassium ferrocyanide on its own. You could react that copper cyanide with diazonium salt.
I remember I need to make this and I couldn't remember why and now I do. One of my hobbies is metal working and one of the processes that I need to do on occasion at least is case hardening the best case hardening products no longer contain cyanide because it's dangerous and people didn't even know they were working with it for years. So it's good that they stopped products containing this because so many people had problems after using this for years but I won't be using it for years I won't be using it industrially it'll be just occasionally and I am aware of it I have an exhaust system in my shop that completely exchanges the atmosphere in less than a minute running continuously I think there will be no risk whatsoever to me. The way I have my exhaust system set up it's almost like I'm in a fume hood like my entire shop is one big fume hood and being evacuated at a very rapid rate. My question would be if I buy the reagents am I going to get any knocks on my door? I mean I have a legitimate and innocent reason to make this but now I'm a little worried about doing it
You could as well just heat sodium or potassium metal with any nitrogenous matter (e.g. amino acids). It should require lower temperatures as well because you don't have to overcome the extremely high stability constant of the iron complex. Another route is the reduction of thiocyanate with e.g. zinc metal. Refer to Vogel for details...
Really nice 👍 So now i suggest making benzyl cyanide and reacting with Ethyl Acetate under the influence of sodium ethoxide to yield Phenylacetonitrile and stopping there. We don't want to be top on the list 😅
Water especially at high temperatures destroys your cyanide. methanol does not. ethanol should not be used as the solubility of KCN in it sucks compared to MeOH
What is your reaction time at 900 celsius? Are there indicators of reaction progress? Using a butane torch on a much smaller scale should also work if the reaction is as robust as that Also I think an addition funnel could do as a makeshift soxhlet extractor haha
Or laser cutting Kevlar. A while ago the box below the cutting deck got the exhaust duct disconnected and several people got cyanide poisoning. We had to evacuate the shop for a few hours and a few people had to go to the hospital. Nobody got seriously hurt or died though.😮
it can be made from salt, there is an additive e536 (20 mg per 1 kg of salt) we take it out and get from potassium ferrocyanide simply potassium cyanide
Great video, but that product is probably riddled with cyanate. Cyanide does get a bad wrap, but (especially with the sodium salt) it's relatively easy to work with. Cyanide poisoning (even in bad cases) can be reversed with modern medicine, and even on-hand methylene blue can be used to overt Cyanide poisoning. I saw some time ago a far better "amateur" method of getting pure Cyanide via reacting ferrocyanide with acid to get HCN, and then passing that through a solution of a basic salt (like NaOH). A bit more sketchy, but yeilds very high purity Cyanide.
@@THYZOID Yes because HCN is a very weak acid and won't react so readily with base unless the base is very strong and/or in high concentration. Lot of HCN tends to escape the trap. An extra bubbler with oxidizing solution (e.g. hypochlorite) is recommended.
no. It is possible to produce HCN from ferrocyanide and an acid and bubbling that trough hydroxide solution to make cyanide but i don´t like this process as the risk is much higher than with the method in the video. When thermally decomposed there is no HCN. There is however the risk of cyanogen being produced as a side product.
I wonder where does the bulk of cyanide ions in industry themselve come from tho Maybe it's created in plants from like formamide dehydration or something?
@JeremiahSmith-wj1ey you have to know where to look. I'm not going to tell you on a youtube comment. If you're smart enough to handle it safely, you're smart enough to know where to get it.
There are indeed a lot of iron carbides, but I have never heard of one with more carbon than iron, and a quick Google search doesn't seem to show much about iron acetylide. The wikipedia page where the video poster probably got the reaction from gives a source from 1897, which seems slightly outdated to me.

BP for butane is 0C, could try to store it in a freezer next time. Still some loss will occur over time because it will have a relatively high vapor pressure even at freezer temperatures.
Heating a mixture of anhydrous potassium ferrocianide with anhydrous potassium carbonate works better. All is needed is to pour the molten salts( potassium cyanide, excess potassium carbonate and some cyanate) into a suitable tray and let it cool.
i don´t want excess potassium carbonate in the mix and am too lazy for additional purification methods lol. for crude cyanide for example for gold recycling your method is good though
Butane has a quiet low vapour pressure so as long as you dont heat it strongly it should be fine. When you open the bottle some of thr gas will boil off and thereby cool itself doen enough that the gas is handleable
