  • This is how to use a compost tumbler to make home compost right at home ..
    Make organic fertilizer for free from kitchen scraps ...
    The 4 things that makes compost are ,
    -Carbon ( paper , sawdust or wood shavings ,straw , dry leaves )
    -Nitrogen ( coffee grounds , eggshells , fruit wastes , kitchen scraps )
    -Water ( Light Moisture is very important for the composting process )
    -Air ( To do their work most efficiently, microorganisms require a lot of oxygen )
    - To get faster, compost cut all your kitchen scrap and browns material into smaller pieces...
    - Spin your compost tumbler 2 to 3 times a week , spend your compost tumblr slow and 10 to 20 times around...

    Leave about 5% of your finished compost in your bin to inoculate the next batch, makes it faster

    I still don't understand the time side versus the plus side. If I'm throwing out scraps everyday at what point does the plus side become the time side? Like I've watched four videos on this exact Tumblr and I just don't understand the concept when do I have to stop adding stuff to the tumbler? I just don't get it

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Sorry..I would say when you start adding new kitchen scraps to the plus side ( stop adding anything after 2 weeks ) cuz those kitchen scraps in there will start to decompose .. move them to the other side... ( clock) If you have finish compost empty in a bucket or container .. or even if it's close to finish still empty it out

    • @Tootnscoot
      @Tootnscoot 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I just do it til it full with a progressive compost then swap and wait. When the next batch is full I empty the other side, leave about 5% and start a new batch.

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, I still compost even in the winter time.. You could also bring the compost tumbler in your garage...
      If the compost is frozen it the enzyme is still alive. When it's unfrozen, just keep mixing it. It's going to be all good

    Your video is the best! Thank you!
    Please tell me if this is right for starting the process:
    1) put chopped up GREENS into PLUS SIDE.
    2) Add the BROWNS (double amount). Add water.
    3) turn the tumbler 5 times.
    CONTINUE ADDING TO THIS SIDE FOR 2 weeks.
    4) after 2 weeks, switch slider so contents are to the MINUS SIDE.
    5). Start step 1 again.
    6) use compost in MINUS SIDE when ready.
    Is this correct? Thank you.
    Also, is it ok to add soiled table napkins?
    Any additional tips welcome. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for these tips. Does a compost tumbler get the contents to a high enough temperature (130 - 150 F) to kill weed seeds and insect eggs/larvae? Or should it be used exclusively for kitchen waste and cardboard - type paper, to avoid incubating unwanted organisms?

    • @Greentgarden
      @Greentgarden  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have a high temperature I would definitely stick with kitchen scrap and cardboard stuff browns.. cuz summertime I do try to keep it in a cool shaded area cuz the sun does get hot....
