The only parallel I can draw here is when D'Lo paralyzed Droz in pro wrestling. It was no one's fault but that's how it goes sometimes. D'Lo went to see Droz frequently in the hospital and called. Honestly, if I were him, I would not want to continue playing anyway. Obviously the injury itself is by far the worst thing, but for anyone with empathy, accidentally causing such an injury (likely feeling or even hearing the break) would be devastating and make it too hard to focus on the match.
I agree. Depending on how serious the match was (champions league final) I might want to continue. But if it’s not a final match I wouldn’t want to continue the match either.

It's not unfair. Even if Marcelo didn't mean to hurt him, he ended up breaking another athlete's leg during a match. Do you really think the referee could shrug it off and resume the game? Not only that, look at Marcelo's face. Do you think he could play? The guy was broken.
The referee there was guided purely by the rules of the game. Breaking a leg or not, that would've resulted in a red card foul. That's probably what the referee went to explain to Marcelo, something in the lines of "Everyone here knows that was an accident and we are sorry for it, but by the rules I have to give you a red card."
