The best I ever went to - 1982 after literally queuing around the Hammersmith odeon block and up Fulham Palace Road for tickets on a Saturday after it was announced on The Robbie Vincent’s Radio London show. Still have the ticket and programme. The actual show (inc this recording) was so good I went back the following day and paid a tout. Ah the days before ticket master (and now surge pricing!) Frankie Beverly had such stage presence and the band were tight. He always gave the crowd what they wanted. RIP
Best for me too, Ian. I remember Robbie announcing it and I think it was my mate Lee who qued for the tickets. The atmosphere on the night was electric. I remember seeing the roadies standing in the wings with open mouths looking out at the crowd. Frankie growled out 'Southern Girl' and soared through 'Happy Feelings' and 'Joy and Pain'. I think they had to do three encores - even with the house lights up the crowd stood firm belting out the 'Joy and Pain' chorus. Incredible night. RIP Frankie. Ben Metcalfe (useing the wife's account).
Hands down one of the pioneers of music... it is scary where music today is headed, thank goodness for this kind of music that will never die...Rock On Frankie!
Frankie--I don't need to say more--some people don't get his message--it's all about LOVE---every time I hear this it's like the very first time--sends chills up and down my spine
Now that's a pocket. One of the best versions ever in my humble opinion. Rip Sam porter, McKinley "junebug" Williams. Always remember harrington avenue oakland.
Frankie Beverly & Maze are the most underrated Silky Soul group ever. Beverly himself sing songwriter needs to be blessed. Cant believe they have not been recognised for their music contribution. Come MOBO's.
Everytime when I hear any of Maze songs with Frankie Beverley singing, I keep thinking that's how it is in heaven, the feeling of joy, love, fun, laughter and sunshine all the time.
Have seen Maze perform live at Hammersmith so many times over the years & leave feeling amazing, everyone singing 'Joy and Pain' .......just can't beat them!!! :))
I was at this concert. These guys play serious music. I also have the Vinyl . The B side is a classic as well . Golden time of Day. Never loses its magic, I am aMAZEd ,,,
I so miss The Hammersmith Odeon,I saw many a great Soul Artist there back in the day, with Maze being one of the most memorable,I remember this song was pressed with a limted run only four days after the great concert,..Thanks!
I was there too, what a performance and the audience really enjoying. The memories are so vivid. Not just for Frankie Beverly and Maze, but all the other soul and funk artists who played there in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
This song got me hooked to gambling with my Dad back in the days, like 2010.. Dad we had the best times chillin, miss you Dad. Rest in Paradise until next time Dad.. Love You 😔
SuperXavier30, You want someone to testify........Well all I can say is that very few Artist that can give you that Deep-Down in your Belly Good Feelin' when you see them performing Live. Make you Proud of your Culture and Humanity. This group here did it for me several times at the Ohio Valley Kool Jazz Festival back at the start of the '80's. Also met a few of them. Cool Cats! Thank you Lord that I am old enough to have experienced REAL R&B! Love them Forever! PEACE
At this gig, Frankie apologises to his UK fans for not playing in UK for several years. He said he received an email from an English fan who complained about this, so they decided to come to London. That fan was my mate, Gary Croucher and when Frankie said this, we went crazy! Was a great night.
i FEEL CHILLS EVERY TIME I HEAR FRANKIE TOO I LOVE THIS MAN TO BE AT HIS CONCERT IS AMAZING.LOVE AND JOY IS WHAT YOU FEEL EVERYONE SINGING TOGETHER,OMG I LOVE HIM ,I WILL SEE HIM AS EVERY TIME HE WILL COME,
Saw these at the Apollo, manchester, round about early 80's, terrible when ya mind goes! What a gig it was!!! So mellow, so goooood. Thanks for sharin mate.
I have seen them live three times and I will attempt to see them July 16, 2010 in Atlanta, Ga at Chastain Park. I love them and alot of artist should take a page out of theirl book. TOUR, TOUR, TOUR and they will love you forever.
Also saw them at Hammersmith Odeon, in the 90,s , such wonderful memories, also saw the Manhattans and Harold Mevin and Bluenotes there. Gerald Alston singing without the microphone, happy days.
@defenz64 ,I'm told it was an amazing night, classic after classic,To think Frankie Beverly's still sharing the Love even today at the ripe young age of 63.Looking back over the years,Frankie Beverly has been one of "music's" most influential artists, isn't it time for Maze to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!...Cheers mate!

@SuperXavier30 Yes I was probably with you, I saw Maze and everyone else that came to the Odeon those were the days, love u-tube it just brings the good days back, you forget what a time for music, London was the place for live bands. I still think of all the people who were denied this fab music, if I spoke with anyone now they would wonder who the hell I was talking about, thanks for the memories!
@aperry6772 ,Very few bands can really pull of what Maze have achieved over the years. They were never huge album sellers, but like yourself, I always purchesed a ticket to see them Live whenever they toured,It's also a great way of earning well deserved revenue without the Record Co dipping their hands in...Enjoy Your Show!!
@ddesign63,Appreciate that, it really is about the warmth,& love that comes across with such sincerity! Tunes like "We Are One" ,"Golden Time Of The Day" and the one that really pulls on my heart strings "I Wanna Thank You",Live in L.A...as Frankie said "You Can't Stop The Love"!!!
@SuperLawz , It really was a Golden period at the “Hammersmith Odeon”, you got me reminiscing now, I was fortunate enough to see Cameo, Slave, Tom Brown, Norman Connors, Roy Ayers, Clarke & Duke, Freddie & Alex, Millie Jackson, Jean Carn, Pieces Of A Dream, Level 42,Chaka Khan, Bill Withers, Atlantic Starr, Al Jarreau,.. The late Roger Troutman, James Brown, Phyllis,& Luther!..I really could go on, no doubt you witnessed a few of these yourself!!.. Cheers for the trip down memory lane!
@SuperXavier30 wow, I bet my mrs was at some of those gigs, I wish I had seen that lot!! If you watch the Level 42 program on here called 'A Play At Home' the live footage is from the Odeon from 1983, you might recognise yourself!! Would love to have seen Stan C, and Norman Connors MR C is stunning. Mrs was definatley at the Luther. Cameo? Very jealous!!! Great posting mate, thanks!!
