    Parenting tip: ask him which stuffed animal you can take with you and take pictures of it on your trip - you could even write a diary about "animal's adventures in Japan" or something.

    Advise from someone who grew up having a parent who traveled all the time: Call every single day with him (even if it's just so he hears your voice). and when you do get back: quality time has to be quality time ;) I was very fortunate that my dad took that to heart and always called in to tell us where he was and when on the weekends he was home, he made sure he spends time with his family and not work. My dad told me a few years ago he felt 'guilty' traveling so much for work. I told him he never should. He felt so present in my life as he always asked how I was doing and how I was feeling etc... Hope you can be there just as much for your adorable little man ;)

      Kind of late, but bringing something (little) home is also helpful.
      My mom used to be away half the weeks because she worked in another town, and she always had something with her when she came back: a tiny crotcheted animal, a single lolly, a pretty postcard (she's an art historian, so lots of church pictures), maybe even just a note or little sketch.
      None of that was really big, but just having something to look forward to was always great.

    I imagine it's different leaving Lance than it is leaving Robbie. You and Lance started off as a long distance couple and even when living together you both still traveled a lot for your jobs. So you both know how to handle that on every level. Robbie is your baby though and is growing and changing constantly. To leave him must be filled with so much emotion after so much time with him. Thanks for sharing this part of yourself Tom. Take care of yourself and have a safe trip to Japan. I can't wait to see you compete. Love to Lance and Robbie.

    I travelled for work 10 years when my children were young. It was part of our family dynamic. My twins are now 26. I am gay. We parents were the modern family before the tv show of same name. At significant locations, I would buy something interesting as a gift. (Maybe your hotel staff could help in that regard during restrictions). Once I bought my one daughter a plush frog. Unintended, but, I love it, she has developed a life long fascination with frogs. Bonus, both my daughters love to travel with one fascinated with all things Japanese, where I once ventured. You have a wonderful family unit. Even though not physically present you will still be parenting in some way imparting values to your son. All the best in your Japan competition.

    When I'm away from family sometimes I'll take a notebook with me. Then I'll collect little things to bring home inside it, like a scrapbook-even little everyday things like ticket stubs that might be fun little souvenirs for someone who's never travelled to that place. Also if I'm really missing someone I'll write a little journal entry to them. It can be really helpful for those times when I'm missing someone terribly but the time difference means they won't be awake, because I can imagine telling the story directly to them. Writing it out by hand feels more intimate to me-plus it takes longer, which can help when you need to make the time pass by!

  • @kerryward7339
    @kerryward7339 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for taking the time to share a bit of your life and your beautiful family.
    A couple of suggestions from a traveling parent: 1. Write him at least one note while you are away telling him how you are missing him, any thoughts you had on that fun play date you had right before you left, what’s going through your mind, how your trip is going, how he’s just amazing you, etc. Take the note and compile it in a notebook or scrapbook for Robbie with all of the other ones you write when you travel. This will help you feel better on those days when you are trying to FaceTime and explain to him how much you miss him, but the wooden spoon from the kitchen is just way more interesting than you are at that moment. It will also give him a scrapbook later in life when he is old enough to understand that shows how much you love him and always thought of him when you were away. Throw in some postcards, hotel paper, event announcements, etc. of the place just for fun. Think about what it will say to him when he sees a note from his dad from the Olympics that talks about how much he was loved and missed at the moment you were preparing for that really big dive or standing on the podium.
    2. Bring something back for him that is part of the place you are visiting (but is at his level). As a parent I had to make a conscious effort not to bring a toy back every time I go on a work trip, because my son will just expect it every time. Also, it just creates a lot of clutter in the house. However, my son is really into rocks, and leaves, and acorns, and sticks, etc. He is very excited to receive a rock from some place I’ve been. This is not to say that I never bring back a snow globe or something, but he really likes the rocks. We keep them in special boxes now (along with all of the other rocks he picks up). When he is done with his rock phase, we can put them in planters or return them to nature.
    Thanks again for sharing a bit of your life. I hope you have a blessed time in Tokyo!

    Tom, I been following you since the London 2012 Olympics and seen you comepete in 2012 and 2016, its hard to leave behind the ones you love, just use that as a fuel for you when you compete you do well, both your husband and son will be cheering for you and when you comeback you will have stories to tell Robbie and he will learn, love and appreciatte what you do, because the things you are doing like go to the Olympics and win medals you are part of a small group that gets to go and compete, plus all the experiences, so use that as a positive way, I wish all of the sucess in the world, Cheers from Mexico

      When I was little (about 7 ~13 years old) my parents traveled a lot and I needed to live in my grandparents or my uncles house. I felt lonely, isolated, like I’m not part of their family and sometimes I felt like I was left behind, it’s a really hard time for me.

In the future you might want to get a toy for each of you and the toys are special and will keep both of you safe. Robbie picks out the one you will carry and you will pick out the one Robbie will keep. Enjoy Japan and I hope you do well. Be safe.

    Another tip: leave plenty of clothes you've worn (sweaters, for example) for his crib/bed area and where he likes to play. The little ones find the smell of their Dad soothing! Seriously. Not dirty socks :) just some things you've worn a lot, like a a few sweaters. Lucky little boy to have you as his Dad! And let me add to the 1,000,000 people who find you beautiful and talented and what being masculine is in this world--strong, sensitive, focused. Good luck in Japan and stay safe there with all the health issues out there.
