I just can get my mind around the fact why Taiwanese generally treat westerners so enthusiastically and seldom am I treated so favorably by the strangers in Taiwan.

我想這方面的事情台灣人還不習慣。先不說這樣的想法對不對，但在西方國家裡，這樣的態度和相處模式已經是主流了。例如在文件上自由選擇Mr、Ms 、不要頭銜，甚至有流行過特意不強調性別的Mx或是希望使用強調性別之外的Dr.。
這種想法是，我們看待一個人，是看這個人的本身、而不是他的外表、性別。所以比如說當我遇到Jack的時候，他的性別並不重要、重要的是他這個人本身，我不需要知道他的性別才能夠跟他相處、尊重他。就像是我不需要知道對方的學歷、收入才能跟對方相處一樣。
但實務上來說，例如英文在用代名詞時，的確有he、she的問題。那在政治正確的氛圍之下，很多西方社會在性別稱呼上就會特意避免主動稱呼對方的性別，以免讓人覺得我是用我自己或社會主流的性別觀念套用到對方的身上。而是會想在交流之中被動地等待對方提到這件事以免稱呼錯誤失禮。或是相反的，可能在一開始就詢問對方對自己的性別認同，例如上面提到的文件上面的稱呼或性別選項。
這種意識型態即便是在西方國家，對於某些保守派來說也會認為是矯枉過正了。而對於在性別認同議題上更晚才注意到的台灣來說，就更容易覺得這種態度把問題放太大了。只要講話的人不是抱有惡意就好了。先不管在性別認同議題上怎樣的態度才是對的，但在台灣普遍的情況是大家根本就沒有意識到這是個問題，也因此在行為上也不會特別留意這些事。但對於進步派的西方社會來說，卻已經會直覺地將這件事納入考量。這的確就是文化可能衝突發生的地方。
我只是想說，我們不一定會認同這種意識形態，但要先了解這種想法、態度為什麼會存在。我們不能單純說我們沒有惡意就好，也要了解為什麼會有人(不是說Jack啦)會因為這個問題感到冒犯。我們希望別人可以了解我們的沒有惡意、也要試著理解對方的想法。這種事像是一種禮儀，禮儀通常是入境隨俗的，但隨著進步價值的全球化，台灣也需要更了解各國對於各種事情的想法。我們未必要配合別的社會的想法、但至少要能理解這些想法的來源。
