This video is part of a series called, Virtual Chestnut Roast 2020. Make sure to check out the other videos in this series and subscribe to our TH-cam channel.
We also have presentations on pecan, chestnut and elderberry production. As well as a presentation by Mike Farrell on maple syrup production, with tours of three sugar shacks. Plus, much more! The videos are posted on HARC's Facebook page and website, as well as on the Center for Agroforestry's Facebook page. Those links are listed below.
Make sure to watch the video about our scavenger hunt. There will be prizes, and the grand prize includes a bag of chestnuts! Full instructions and details are listed in the description of that video.
The University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry and the University of Missouri Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center have joined to host the Mizzou Agroforestry TH-cam channel. Our intent is to provide quality video content on temperate agroforestry practices in the Midwest, events taking place at HARC, and research updates from UMCA.

Koreans have over 1,000 recipes for chestnuts. We now have 50 trees on 8 acres. 6 mature, 4 5 year old, and rest are planted last spring and growing fast. Very important information on this video, very helpful for an old army retiree.

We just planted our first 100 trees using HARC seeds. We only have 700 more to go. Thank you Dr. Gold for providing information.

Ken Hunt was a great asset to the chestnut program.
We grow Eaton, Qing, Pandora and and some seedling trees as well.
One thing about control of weevils is that Squirrels will carry off and bury infested nuts, so limiting them is as important as a full and clean pick up.

Here on our farm south of Fayette, MO we have 4 young chestnut trees; 2 Qing trees, one Sleeping Giant tree and a Bond Orchard tree, all planted 2017. The Sleeping Giant is the smallest of the four, however it has produced 6 chestnuts this year.

Hi Michael, we are new to Missouri and just bought a house and are looking to buy seeds to winter over. We know we are late but any ideas where we could find some seeds?

    Thanks for the video!
The leaves of my seedlings have started growing dry and brown. The soil in the pots is nicely moist. Any idea what that is? Thanks.

I ordered and today I got 10 plants of the Chinese chestnuts. I have to plant them in front of my honey bee hives. Honey bees love chestnuts, and they produce one of the best kind of honey from them.
My question is: How far I should plant these young trees from each another? I have read 20-40 feet, but I do not know what is optimal distance. I am in Richmond, Va.
    Every advice is appreciative.

Hi, from Central Virginia! 30 ft spacing if you have the room, 20 ft is acceptable if yo are willing to prune back canopy when they are mature to allow for sunlight.

@@chestnutvalley9187, thanks a lot. I planted them 25 feet because I do not have enough space.

You’ll be good for a long time at that spacing.

can I plant chestnut trees in Ottawa, Ontario Canada?

    • @MizzouAgroforestry
      @MizzouAgroforestry  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you for your question. Dr. Gold sent me the following message for you.
The short answer is yes, then, the longer answer is: I need to refer this individual to more localized expertise.
Fortunately, Ontario has the “Society of Ontario Nut Growers”.
They have a website with information about suggested chestnut cultivars (Chinese chestnuts) for Ontario.
There are also good resources from Michigan and some from NY State.
Of course it depends where this individual is located in Ontario (since very southern parts of Ontario are at least Zone 5 or thereabouts, whereas further north, too cold to grow most cultivars worth growing I think.
Also, obviously, the soils have to be right.
You could suggest our chestnut guide along with the resources below:

I want to put 2 chestnut trees in my backyard in Sacramento, CA. I would like to grow tall trees (get some shade around here). Of course it would be great if the nuts tasted ok. Can you recommend any varieties for me? Do you know where I can buy small trees (it's more difficult than one might think to find a store)? Thanks!

You know what likes chestnuts more than humans? birds and squirrels! I have to harvest mine early or I will have none. These nuts are light brown when harvested in a green burr. Some burr's are split but many are not This is my first year of harvesting and hoping I didn't harvest too early.
