  • A film by Terry Herring and Unlimiteds Detroit. The Gold Cup race was run on the Detroit River in Detroit, Michigan on July 7th, 1963. This film has some great color footage of boats like the Tahoe Miss, Miss Exide, $ Bill and many more.

    My hometown! We'd go out to Belle Isle or Memorial Park every year to watch the hydroplane races. Miss Bardahl was my favorite.

    I grew up in Seattle, Lake City to be exact. We used to build hydros out of wood and pull them behind our bikes at the Victory Heights dirt playground. Great memories as a kid. The Golden Era of youth in America I believe.

    My 1st Gold Cup in Detroit. I was 8, my Dad brought us down. Loved the roar of those Allison's..Great soundtrack too.

    My dad took us to the race every year. he was in a few smaller races in the 50's. he meet Gar Wood.

      Wow nice, I went to the race in Cordalane Idaho in 1959 with my dad and I raced in thee Nationals in 1986 in Oregon. I met MIra Slovak who drove Tahoo Miss later on. He was very nice to me. The enitre Budweiser Family I saw as well

    It was either Allison or Rolls Royce...the Bardahl had a Rolls? Thriftway had a Rolls Royce?

      Bardahl and Thriftway both ran the same Rolls Royce Merlin engine. You are correct. Allison or Rolls in that era. The Gale team mostly ran Allison.

      @@JeffDunncom Gales were heavy boats too... better in rough water but they seemed to break rudders and props.
