    My last PPG flight the wind picked up 2 hours earlier than the forecast. Tried to snail back to the airport (no speed bar fitted), but decided to land out. Safety first. The 2 mile bush hike to civilization was also great. THANK YOU for another awesome video. Really appreciate the learning and content.

    Middle of a perfect weather day in New Port Richey Florida and I'm am so stuck inside captivated on watching your videos...
    I soooo want to do this... Is my only thoughts right now.
    65, both knees &both hips replaced. A tad heavier than you and can not run, but Lord knows, my heart and mind are with you...
    Thanks for wasting my last 3 hours... Lol.
    Take it you don't believe in, or do the trikes! Finding that perfect beeping noise with the weight of me on a trike I'm guessing can't be done..

    Blue day thermal flying with strong winds! At the top of that one climb, it looked like you were close to some wispy cloud shreds. And then it was gone. That is quite different from a day with nice big cumulus clouds being fed by the thermal. On those days one needs to head to the edge of the cloud when you get to the wispy level just below the big cloud. If not one experiences the cloud suck effect. Where you were climbing a nice 3-4 msec up to the cloud, at the wispy level under the center of the cloud the thermal all of a sudden strengthens to 6-7 msec and you instantly find yourself in the white room where you can't even see the instruments on your flight deck anymore. A very disorienting experience where a little bubble compass pinned to one for your shoulder straps about 2 inches from your nose so you can still see it can be very helpful to fly straight into the upwind direction so you can exit the white room as soon as possible! ;^)

    Love this! I want to try this when i gain experience. For a beginner thermaling would you recommend an a-rated wings? Is there a way to calculate the sink rate of various wings? How would you go about selecting wing that's optimized for thermally that's safe for beginners also?
    I have the option to buy a brand-new gin Pegasus 2 you think that would work well for me training and first year of flying as well as keeping it for thermaling? Thanks, I appreciate your down to earth style. It's real talk

    • @kyleoglee

      Peg 2 should be fine. But don't just huck into big air. You must approach it stepwise, with caution, and additional SIV type training.

  • @SmittySmithsonite
    @SmittySmithsonite 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've learned alot about this type of flying from you. Prior to finding your channel, this wasn't even on my radar. Definitely will try and play around in the thermals once I get some experience - looks like fun.
    Question for you, Kyle - I know the "A" lines get the wing overhead, but which ones do you pull to get the wing (your hot wing, and regular "A" or "B" rated wings) DOWN?
    The video is over ... yet, I still hear the beeping of the vario ... I think I'm in a thermal here! 😁

    • @kyleoglee
      @kyleoglee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rear risers or brakes, but more importantly, it's the running towards the wind that kills it, not what's in your hands.

    • @kyleoglee
      @kyleoglee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Was low in strong conditions, not worth letting go of the controls and getting smashed.

    • @michaelvadney5803
      @michaelvadney5803 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kyleoglee so if you were higher up it would be ok? What is you minimum altitude then. Thanks!

    • @entelin
      @entelin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Committing to actually landing each time is far more valuable than picking some higher altitude to designate as a "flight over". Getting a low save is always a balance between positioning for a safe landing, and efficiently climbing. So practicing this without cheating is important. You don't get to relight at 500 ft when you don't have the engine.

    • @entelin
      @entelin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelvadney5803 I can't speak for Kyle, but while I think having a hard minimum is important to start with, eventually it becomes a minimum that is relative to what you are feeling at the time. The fact is that if you are circling in lift, you aren't going down, so as long as you are somewhere where you can land immediately, it doesn't really matter. My lowest save ever was maybe 250ft (in a hangglider, not pg), but I've heard stories of pilots nearly touching the ground and getting back up, though that's so rare that I don't know of any video of it. Personally I feel almost for sure sqrewed if I get lower than 500, you probably get a bit better odds on a PG.

    • @kyleoglee
      @kyleoglee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@entelin I've bounced back from 100 feet once on PG. Maybe could have done this day if I had my pod harness. Each day is different. On that 100 foot save I was setting up for an approach, and saw a buzzard cross in front of me. I did a smooth weightshift towards the bird and got a single beep for 4 turns, then 2 beeps, then steady beeps, 6000 feet later cumulus cloud was forming all around me! It was one of the most amazing climbs I've ever had! And yes, the landing out thing is valuable practice, which is what this day was all about.

    What's your go to set up for mid day thermal flying?.....wing, motor, etc.

  • @member762
    @member762 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will you talk about the similarities and differences between paragliding and motorgliding. Why is it dangerous for paramotors in thermals but paragliders actually seek them out?

    • @kyleoglee
      @kyleoglee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is no additional risk to thermal flying with a motor unit. Having a motor actually gives you extra options, so it could be argued that it's technically safer. On the other side of the coin. With a motor, naturally occurring lift sources are not "needed" to stay up. That's the reason PG guys seek it out, they HAVE to have a source of lift. Motor guys can go up in any condtion. Flying in thermic air does pose a larger risk factor than non lifting air, but that's why we fly high in conditions like that. That's the short answer, hope it helps.

    You shouldnt scratch too low. You were 20 metres high and f ing around with ccc glider (zeno) anything will eventually slap you to the ground. You should have a threshold to search thremals. Make it 50 metres 150ft i suggest. Nice video. Thanx

    Cobra skills for inflation of the tenacious Zeno!
    Then a 3-step lift off, like a Boss!
    I bet your fans would like and extra GoPro looking straight up from your helmet to the wing to see how it dynamically reacts every second of the flight.
    Then you could merge that image in when necessary from the upper right of the screen.
    It would catch surges like what happened at 9:53.
    Another absolutely flight-worthy awesome Kyle O video!

    • @kyleoglee
      @kyleoglee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it didn't take up so much card space, I may would try that. Not sure much could be gleamed from such video, I mean, it shoots I stab the brakes, it rocks back, I come up a bit on them. Pretty basic active flying inputs. Thanks for the kind words nelium.
