      @Antony Ruiz what a random nonsensical combination of statements. Socialism = flawed economic theory that it would be better for the state to monopolize the industry in order to eventually eliminate the state altogether and be happily ever after without bad politicians and abusive bosses. Nowadays commonly confused with social democracy in the USA, which is in fact just market economy and welfare policies, or "social safety net," contrasting with a more social-Darwinistic set of policies.

    • @grayeaglej
      @grayeaglej 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We really dont know yet what the possibilities are regarding concepts like "life" and "consciousness" when it comes to things as massive as planets and stars, only that without the deaths of ancient stars the heavy elements required for complex life would never have been formed into planets and it takes at least three generations of stars living and dying, giving up thier heavy elements, before planets with the materials required for a technological civilization can form. Thats why some astrophysicists theorize that humanity may be the first, possibly only, civilization to develop Radio technology and Space flight, all other planets in the galaxy having life possibly being too old to have the materials needed for such technologies and so any intelligent life never having the resources to advance beyond the stoneage. O.o
      We could be the very first space ferring civilization just because stars like Betelgeuse sacrificed themselves.

      Ultima Thule was never technically the official name, it was just a nickname given by the scientists studying it because it turns out not even scientists like using the "letter and number" designations in casual conversation. I'm not sure on the full reasoning on why they didn't make the nickname official, but I know part of it was that the term "Ultima Thule" actually has white supremacist connotations in specific contexts.
      While few would actually regard naming it such an intentional endorsement of white supremacy, I get why this would prompt them to consider some other options when it came time to submit the official name.

    I much preferred the name "Ultima Thule". It really, really fitted closely with what the object is! The association with "bad WW2 Germans" is an unfortunate historical event that shouldn't be carried on forever! Buddhists and Hinduists in India and elsewhere in Asia are not ashamed in the slightest of using swastikas in their religious buildings, as their usage deprecates WW2 by thousands of years, literally. "ultima thule" is a name that also existed for thousands of years before those sad years in mankind, and had very possitive associations for Greco-Roman geographers as the ultimate frontier, why should we discard all that?

    Could that lopsided appearance be from a concentration of mass of heavy fused elements that aren't able to enter the core, thus forced outwards and together through gravity and centripetal force? That would be interesting to have a definitive answer on.

    Hold up, I thought the bigger something was the more gravity it has, but you're saying that Betelgeuse is so big that it has weak gravity on the surface? No wonder the flat-earthers are so confused

    • @Opticalpopcorn
      @Opticalpopcorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      /Heavy/ things have more gravity, not big things. Not usually an important distinction in casual conversation, but important here.
      Essentially: imagine if Earth stayed just as heavy, but became twice as large. The center of gravity is still at the same point - the core - and the gravity of Earth in and of itself has not changed. Remember, though, that the farther you get away from the core, the weaker the pull of gravity is. Thus, us humans on the surface would experience less gravity since we're farther away from the core - even though the gravity is the same.

    Perhaps there more external particles interacting with the star on one side rather than the other. Because of its size and swelling, maybe it's a build up of protons on the brighter side. The potential dust blocking the view on one side theory could be more than just blocking the view, it could be interacting with the star to cause the dimming. Just a theory of electromagnetic galaxies I've been working on. Things like this keep fitting well into the theory.

    I don't know if I'm the only one but I really hope that Betelgeuse explodes. I would really love to see a Supernova on the night sky during my lifetime. I know that even if the star exploded today by the time the light of the supernova explosion reaches earth I wont be here anymore so I really hope that Betelgeuse exploded ~ 630 years ago, so it is just a matter a few years for us to see the explosion.
    Then I remember that astronomical events do not unfold that quickly... and... conclude that I probably won't be able to see Betelgeuse explode :(

    Well, the title didn’t have supernova-related clickbait in it, but somehow the feeling is still the same. They should’ve just left out any talk about the possibility of Betelgeuse going supernova, which a lot of people are hoping will happen before they die, myself included. Shy of that, I’d love to see an impressive meteor storm or a comet that can be seen with the naked eye, tail and all.

    In regards to Arrokoth, if a Human were ever to be on its surface, what's its gravitational power? Like, if this _Hypothetical sapiens_ were to perform a really deep-body jump (knees bent all the way, ass nearly touching the ground), would they be able to achieve escape velocity? Would their jumping change the rotation of the celestial body?

    Well it looks lopsided, but we know this star is a runaway star. This causes it to have a bow shock on one side, so infrared imaging picks it up as lopsided.
