    Hi just getting back into painting I have been painting on and off for about 45 years nothing as good as yours and am struggling a bit but find your painting guides so helpful and easy to follow keep up the good work J

    I found this very useful thanks. Didn't have exactly those colours but found good enough alternatives in scale 75 and citadel paints.

    I believe the brown is more appropriate for British battle dress. The Canadian battle dress fabric had a green tint to it.

    I always enjoy videos because of your paint color discussions. You present options and explain why you chose what you did. Very helpful!

      I think it helps a little to remember sometimes that there's not always a 'right' way. There's a lot of room for preference and style in these things, and knowing why someone chose a particular method or colour can help you in making your own choices, too. You gotta know the Why of things!

    Thanks for the guide. I am working on a US Airborne platoon for Market Garden and they get a British forward observer for free, so I'll be painting my first Red Devil soon. I personally like the Reflective/Refractive/Retractive/Redemptive/Regressive/Redundant Green version myself. :)

    Glad I found your channel. Good solid advice for the real world painter. I was getting bogged down in other channels that were producing results that I could not replicate,resulting in several rage quits. Well I'm back now :). Quick note as to shading; I like the quickshading but was seldom happy with the way that it would often take quite vibrant colours and dull them into mud. I've just tried thinning my (army painter) inks with 1/2 acrylic matt medium/1/2 water and a couple of drops Vallejo flow improver. I think you could substitute the flow improver with washing up liquid and I know that AP have released their own mix,which I've not tried. The mixture allows you to dilute the ink and lends itself to shading recesses in the model without dulling the basecoat colours and you have control over the strength of the wash.I found just using water caused the pigments to separate.
    Anyhoo, TL;DR Thanks for your advice. Have a sub.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Army Painter's shade medium is pretty good for what it does, and seems from experience to be slightly better suited to softening the 'stain' effect without losing the colour you're working with. Good stuff, if a little worrying to apply since it goes on quite cloudy!
      The objective is always practical, reasonable techniques, explained in a way that I hope makes sense. Glad to hear that it seems to work for you, too! :D

      Camo's one of those things that seems super intimidating at first, and it's not until the last couple of brush strokes that it really comes together. I know that at the first stages just splotching on the green it looks an absolute mess, but you've gotta hold your nerve and see it through. :D

    Very nice. I’ve just started painting some Paras, using German Camo Beige as a base but I fancied doing some in the more green tone base too. Hadn’t thought of Middlestone so I’ll use some of that.
    A couple of Citadel paints I’ve found useful - Athonian Camoshade to wash the smocks, i use it for all camo, it’s a really good green/brown shade. For the berets I’ve found Screamer Pink washed with Agrax gives a nice maroon colour.
    Your skin tones are fantastic, I’ll have to look up your video on fleshtones.

      There's a lot to be said for that method! I think it does look much better for display painting, but with my eyes and usual gaming distances I like a little more contrast in my highlights so the camo pattern doesn't work... well, like a camo pattern should! :D Good call, though, and thanks!

    Great video , one question , is there a reason that you don't highlight before the Agrax wash ? It just seems like those highlight colour would be to bright , keep up the good work......

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The colours look crazy bright on the palette, but once they're applied and dried a little they blend in much better. Highlights on miniatures that are going to be viewed at typical gaming distances need to be a little sharper so they don't simply blend into the background and disappear. If you want a more muted, natural-looking appearance though, you can highlight after the shade by using just the original colours again. :)

      I really didn't notice much difference, if I'm honest! I had just put the shade there to make sure I hadn't too much on my brush at any time, and in that respect it helped a bit. Not sure if it being a wet palette would matter much!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

      There's actually a 15mm US infantry video back in the archive somewhere. They're not too much different from the 'full size' stuff - so to speak - but try to work slightly lighter and you'll generally be fine. High contrast to delineate areas of colour works best!

      I couldn't really tell you off the top of my head, I'm afraid. You could try looking for a colour conversion chart - there's a few good ones to find if you hit up Google. The 'real match' with kit like this can be tricky, but between fading and different conditions you'll never really need for it to be perfect.

    Loved this, finally found a accurate colour scheme to follow. This is really great work. However I've got 30 to paint for my grandson play with. Any chance you have a quicker guide with just one colour guide, so dark green base for jacket, red brown for trousers etc etc
    I totally understand you're a professional model maker and would hate a slapdash approach , however I feel this would really help beginners and those of us painting large numbers in a limited time frame.
    There is a '13 step' guide on TH-cam but the colours are awful. So basic one colour with a wash over the detail and whether & how to use a lacquer.
    Did notice another similar video 'CW Modelling' used a dark green mix as a based coat rather than the middlestone which does look good.
    The triangle camo pattern tip is great 👍
    Regards
    Karl

      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this one might help! th-cam.com/video/h-CEUYYiqNY/w-d-xo.html It's probably more in keeping with how you mean 'slapdash,' I think - it's also conveniently how I've painted a British Airborne army in a week, so I can at least attest that it works reasonably well for getting things out the door ready for action without a lot of extra fuss. :)
