Guessing that you’re from the USA like me. If I hadn’t been recording randomly off of a college radio station in San Jose, CA (KSJS) I would’ve never heard this either.
I'm taking off this party hat The white situation is over A new situation begins Red guitar is broken To beat the drum of youth again Take too long to say Stay, stay, stay and I will understand you Stay, I will understand you I write a new book everyday The love theme for the wilderness I fit the words together Candy girls want candy boxes She loves the musicbox forever She's crying on my shoulder Stay, stay, stay and I will understand you Yeah, yeah, yeah, I will understand you Summer girls in disarray Can be so free and easy now Well, we'll be free and easy Stay, stay, stay and I will understand you Stay, I will understand you I write a new book everyday A love theme for the wilderness A love theme Stay (repeat until fade)
This song was my introduction to The Blue Nile when it was played on the Music Box TV station, and i still ove it to bits. One of my all time favourite bands.
Totally hear you bruv. I was the same. 18 and living in Leeds at the time. The feelings back then of freedom rush through your veins in a nanosecond listening to this now. And then they are gone. Leaving you feeling like your missing something you can't replace.
I was working as an apprentice electrician in Glasgow at Cowglen hospital, in 1985 , when a colleague, Big Dan, got me into the Blue Nile, went out and bought the album , still love listening to It today, thanks Dan. I later worked at Linn Products who cut it on their record label, Linn Records.
I was 16 years old when I met my first love, Grace was here name... I used to go to her house, where she shared a room with her big sister, her sister used to play the album "A Walk Across the Rooftops" all the time... It was then I was introduced to this very special album & of course the wonderful band that is "The Blue Nile'... Enough said..xxx
A different level of class- PB I salute you Sir- you know you've made it in life when your wee lassie, now a woman walks intae yir gaff singing Tinseltown and you feel so proud
they're scottish. glaswegian to be precise. and this song is about my mum, my wonderful beautiful incredible mum. thank you paul buchanan you too are a beautiful beautiful person. X
Did your mother lile the song? What did she say about it? This is one of my all-time favourite songs; I used to play the record on repeat. Haunting, hypnotic, mesmerising, hopeful, beautiful...
First heard this band back in August 84 on my lunch break listening to laser radio station having moved from Blackburn to Hastings. Tinsel town was playing and I instantly fell in love with them, I still love their unique sound today. Hope they are back in the studio soon.
I first saw this group in a bar in Hong Kong, 1984. I wuz in a bar with my travel buddy, Bruce, and we were chatting up these chicks. In the background, the bar has this big video screen and this was playing. I loved it! So when they did a tour in my native Chicago maybe 1990(?) I saw them in concert at a small intimate venue with my friend, Grace who also happened to be from Hong Kong. Will always remind me both events in my life.
My brother had this lp quiet life years ago he was a gothic abig cure fan as well with the dramatic hair and makeup so 80s not forgetting souixcie and the banshees and public image ltd johnny rotten 🎤
you can totally hear how peter gabriel was inspired by this. Listen to his stuff before "SO" and after, he was totally transformed by hearing this band.
blue nile is like what every 80s band tried (mostly unsuccesfully) to be. i hear bits of the police bass lines, or peter gabriel, but tBN did it better...
When you hear blue Nile for the first time you will never stop listening to them unique music from Glasgow.
I stumbled on them by accident, and now I can't stop!
It's happened to me an hour ago
Incredible.
Always !!!
An acquired taste, fortunately I acquired it!
how did I miss this band during the 80's???? Wow, they are so great!
Guessing that you’re from the USA like me. If I hadn’t been recording randomly off of a college radio station in San Jose, CA (KSJS) I would’ve never heard this either.
This band must be the most under-rated of all time . Brilliant lyrics.
Poetry.
Warehouse Leeds, 80’s those in the know followed this band haunting lyrics and 100% underestimated, tinsel town was genius
Anyone else love the rhythm guitar break?
Oh...yes!
Yes my friend, and other bits and peaces!
I'm taking off this party hat
The white situation is over
A new situation begins
Red guitar is broken
To beat the drum of youth again
Take too long to say
Stay, stay, stay and I will understand you
Stay, I will understand you
I write a new book everyday
The love theme for the wilderness
I fit the words together
Candy girls want candy boxes
She loves the musicbox forever
She's crying on my shoulder
Stay, stay, stay and I will understand you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I will understand you
Summer girls in disarray
Can be so free and easy now
Well, we'll be free and easy
Stay, stay, stay and I will understand you
Stay, I will understand you
I write a new book everyday
A love theme for the wilderness
A love theme
Stay (repeat until fade)
This song was my introduction to The Blue Nile when it was played on the Music Box TV station, and i still ove it to bits. One of my all time favourite bands.
Oh, the crushing nostalgia of this song. The song plus my nostalgia for my life back then Glasgow. Paul Buchanan's voice melts me.

A true gem from the 80’s classic alternative music. Still bring shivers…
this song is a perfect example of how amazing this album is
I was working as an apprentice electrician in Glasgow at Cowglen hospital, in 1985 , when a colleague, Big Dan, got me into the Blue Nile, went out and bought the album , still love listening to It today, thanks Dan. I later worked at Linn Products who cut it on their record label, Linn Records.
Seemingly this was due to Linn being the only company that could produce the clarity of the sound they were looking for 👌

Wait, was your mom the girlfriend of 8 years who left him because he wouldn't commit?!
Don't think so, probably more like one he never forgot. He's a really wonderful lyricist
Where from Glasgow did they come from?
Simply the most beautiful haunting sound from the most beautiful haunting lyricist

The best thing to come out of Scotland
This song is perfect while strolling out in the city at night.

8th wonder of the world this has never been covered….it’s an astonishing song….I was working with LINN on the LP12 and Canns.
Duncan Sheik covered it - just discovered that today and had to go back to the original.

I would love to hear The Postal Service cover this song
Just discovered Duncan Sheik's cover of "Stay" today, and it pretty much sounds like a Postal Service song.
That would be a really great choice for a cover for Postal Service.
