  • So many changes in such a short amount of time 🥺. Join us as we transform the rest of our tiny city backyard this week! Let our sponsor BetterHelp connect you to a therapist who can support you - all from the comfort of your own home. Visit betterhelp.com... and enjoy a special discount on your first month.
Thank you all for your patience and love as we've navigated this next chapter of our lives. If you haven't watched our life update episode we recommend starting there so you can get caught up with the last 6 months of our lives: • life update
Moving forward with high vibrations and a whole lot of love 🌈 ✨ Most importantly we are loving time with our sweet baby girl Frankie Lee Fitzgerald.
You should also watch our episode called "We're Back" to see Part 1 of our tiny backyard makeover:
    • We're Back!
Today we tackle the second half of our DIY backyard project at our Toronto triplex. It's only 500 sq-ft but with our daughter and our niece set to grow up here we wanted to make it a fun space for everyone! This time we take on the teeny tiny patio space and hope to add another living room to our apartment by panelling the ceiling, painting the concrete floor, adding some furniture and a privacy screen too.
What do you think of the total transformation of this space?! Would love to hear from you in the comments x

I ran a home daycare for 14 years. The one message I would give to the mom dropping off their new baby was to not feel guilty. Babies can feel your stress and anxiety. If they feel that you are stressed and anxious about leaving them, then they feel that there is something wrong with you leaving them.
You’ve made a decision based on what’s best for you and your family, so do not feel guilt and do not feel anxious over that decision. Know that your child will be loved and cared for, and will be OK.
Send that positive energy out into the universe, and let your child know that you value your time alone, and at work. There’s nothing wrong with that decision, so do not put the energy of negativity in the mix. Feel confident, and comfortable with your decision. Let your child feel your positivity and good energy. It will make their day away from you much easier, and they will learn that it’s OK to do things for yourself.
You set the energy of the experience… so make it good energy!

I read in a book about ancient history once that historically, babies would only spend about 40% of their day with their mother/primary parent. The rest would be dads, aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents. Nowadays, the village is different and involves daycares, but it’s completely natural to have other people look after your child during the day if that’s what you want. It made me feel better anyway!

I agree, I also did daycare in my home for 25 years and the parents felt SO guilty leaving their little, especially when they cried. One mother would try and console her toddler and the longer she stayed the more worked up he would get, One day she came in and I asked her "please hand me Adams bag, and hang his coat on the rack and just say, bye, I will be back soon and I love you" she did, and when she stepped out the door and closed it he stopped crying INSTANTLY and went to the toy box....

The backyard looks so different! Excellent job! As the mother of many, I think Eamon needs to remember that taking time for himself is nothing to feel guilty for. Refreshing yourself is needed to make yourself a better parent. When they see us role modelling liking our own company and taking time for self-care and just chilling, they learn how to do that themselves, which will make them healthier and happier adults in the future too. My husband died suddenly at just 45. My only regret for his life is he didn't take enough time for himself, putting everything into work and our kids, even though I tried to get him to take time just for himself and with his friends more.

Gorgeous renovation ! Enjoy your days and every second you have with Frankie. She is so beautiful and growing so fast. The days feel like they are long sometimes, but the years go by way too fast. Slow down to be with her, but you have to keep moving forward also for her. Give her lots of kisses, hugs, holding her while she sleeps, singing to her as she goes to sleep, these are some of the things I miss so much doing now that my son is a grown man. Those years went so fast - almost 33 years now. Enjoy her because that time too goes away so fast! ♥️

time as a parent is so different! it feels like every moment you have needs to be productive or efficient in some way. you have to manage your time so well or you don’t get anything done or get time for yourself. it’s HARD to adjust to having less time for projects and creativity, especially as a creative. it’s such a valid feeling and I love that you both are open about these feelings and experiences with each other and with your audience. so good to normalize. we aren’t bad parents for needing time “off duty” or time for creativity or choosing to work!

Don't feel guilty about taking time away from your beautiful child to work or relax. Your mental and physical self needs refreshing. That way, you're at your best for your child and family. Both of you must take time just for each other, away together.

My son was born in 1989 and maternity leave was 3 months, so crazy! I thought I was taking 2 weeks to get ready for our new baby, but he arrived early, the day after my last day of work! Looking back, I have no idea how I did it, 2 days to spend some quality family time, do laundry, get groceries, clean the house and get back to work Monday! I would keep our son up late in the evenings and not wake him to take him to daycare! I’d take him there in his jammies and put him in a crib! He’d usually sleep until 10/11 am! I think that helped his sleep habits and we did this right up to 4 yo - he eventually would lift his arms or legs as I did start to dress him and he’d sleep right up to arrival at his daycare! At least we got to spend evening time together! If I had it all to do again, I would have tried to find a job that allowed me to be at home!

I remember the day I returned to work as a nurse with our first and second daughters. It was painful, and I cried. They had a babysitter when they were small, and then they went to day school. My husband would pick them up from school, fix dinner, and put them to bed. So, I started working the night shift to spend more time with them. When I took classes, they went with me as two- and four-year-olds. They told me they still remember learning from my classes. They are both adults now and repeat what they learned in my classes. Can you believe that? Being a working mom is rough. Our girls turned out to be smart, healthy, and great adults that we are proud of.

I have a son and a daughter that are 15 months apart, they are grown now and the advice from my kids doc was priceless. Remember that they will love you no matter if you’re there 24/7 or not. It is good for the both of y’all to get some away time. And don’t forget to take time for yourselves with dates and time together. Your kids will grow up and move out….take care of YOUR relationship together. It will make that transition easier if you’re still strong in your relationship. Much love to the three of you. ❤❤❤

Eamon, you are doing great as a dad. As others have said, do what you can do. Spending time with Frankie is not about how much you spend with her. It is the quality of time you spend with her. Remember to take time for yourself as well; I don't know how that would work for you with all the projects you have planned; it is different for everyone. One thing I tell all the parents I work with (I work in early child intervention) is to remember to take time for yourself. Remember what they tell you on an airplane: put your oxygen mask first before helping others. If you don't have that oxygen mask on, you are no good at helping anyone else. So try to forget about the time it takes to finish a project (it looks like you have plenty of help) do what you need to do for yourself, and then be there for Frankie; Frankie will be grateful for that in the end. Bec, the same goes for you.

Eamon, as a probable co-ADHD being, the three quickest fixes are earthing (being barefoot on the ground, several times a day for at least 5 minutes) and breathing in thru the nose, hold it and breathing out thru the mouth (make a low rumble). When I do it with children I say ‘smell the flowers, breathe out a dragon rumble). You can never do this to much. And of course, drinking plenty of healthy water. Earthing helps to calm and sleep better (I bet you’re sleep deprived and this will help like ‘power sleep’. You got this. ❤

Thank you so much for the video. As a mom of two grown boys, everyone’s balance is different…the key is to be kind to yourself. You’ll make mistakes and that’s okay. It’s so important to have moments of selfishness since we will always give so much of ourselves to our children. Enjoy these moments and don’t give in to the pressures.

Bec, I'm almost 23 years into being a mom (my kiddos are 22 and 17). We all have different journeys as mom. I started as a nanny and knew right then, that I never wanted to have a nanny for my kids. I stopped working after my first was born, but went back to work when she was about 2. Then after my 2nd was born, I completely quit work and became a full-time mom and homeschool teacher. I did that for 9 years and had no intention of going back to work, but saw an ad for a part-time admin, so we decided that I would go back to work part-time. I worked part-time until 2020 when I went back full-time. The oldest had graduated from high school and the youngest was about to enter high school. It's always a juggle, but having a good routine helps. Mine was wakeup, feed the kids, get ready for work, take the kids to school, go to work until school was out, then pick up the kids from school, run an errand or two, go home & make dinner, then the evening with the family, then get the kids ready for bed, do bedtime routine, then time with just us parents, then to bed.
Now that my youngest has just graduated from high school, I'm back to working part-time and back in college to finish my degree. And come the fall, we are hoping to travel a bit more.
You will figure out your routine and it will always be evolving as Frankie keeps growing. Then one day, you will be empty nesters and you'll create new routines.

❤Love you three adorable humans and the best dog ever❤.
Here is a parenting goal…raise your kids to be someone you want to be friends with. My son will be 50 next year and I am constantly learning from him and being impressed with the man he has become. I am so proud that we are friends. His high school sweetheart is his wife. Their daughter is grown up and left the nest. And we’ve been through some STUFF and come out on the other side different yet better. Just relax and enjoy Frankie and each other. Never stop having fun. Don’t worry. Be happy and safe and surround her with a village as it appears you already have. That’s my vague opinion on parenting. Oh, don’t sweat the small stuff and always make your expectations clear. ❤

I feel you SO much on the feeling of losing time for yourself, to think, to be YOU. I have two under 5 and my time is not my own. There is a period of grieving your old life, even when you love your child with all of your heart. Your identity changes, taking care of yourself changes, your marriage changes… give it time, know you are not alone, and it’s okay to be bummed about it. It’s the hugest change you’ll ever go through!

    Happy Father's day.
Parenting is a constant state of guilt. You want to spend time with your kids, BUT you need a break. So guilt is a part of it. Mine are now 35 and 33. I still want to protect them, but it's now their life to live. Did I do enough to prepare them? What damage did I do by doing something or not doing something. Parenthood is hard, demanding and no assurance of doing it all right. Remember, you are doing the best you can with the tools you have. In twenty years from now, there will be new parenting advice books that contradict what we know now.
Just love your kids for who they are.
My mistake was making my kids behave a certain way as I thought it was a reflection on my parenting. Don't expect your kids to be a reflection of how good you are.
Love to all the parents who are doing, or did their best.
    Hugs from Burlington 🇨🇦

I am not a mom, but I do have one, and I want to emphasize how important it is for kids to see their moms working/doing something they love/taking time away. I am an adult now, but for the first three and a half years of my life, I was attached to my mom. When it came time to start preschool or for her to go back to work, I struggled really hard. So many tears. Transitions are still hard for me. With much more experience when my brother was born, my mom made sure to take time for herself. He to this day does much better than I do. Part of that is temperament, but I truly believe that part of it is me never learning in my most formative years that mom always “comes home.” Bec, by taking time, even a few minutes, to leave Frankie with someone she is safe with who isn’t you, you are giving her such a better chance at growing into a well adjusted child. You’re doing just fine 🩷🩷

    Hey Bec,
Your question about parenting and returning to work is such a critical one as we (women) are redefining our roles as mums and professionals. I’m at least 20+ years older than you and my 2 kids are now 19 and 20. My oldest lives with an Autism Disorder and parenting needs majorly impacted my career choices and I battled this and felt guilt and was constantly exhausted, anxious and overwhelmed. I feel 100% certain this contributed to my child’s anxiety. In hindsight, I wish I stayed with the creative filmwork I was doing and the flex schedule that came with that instead of caving to pressure to get a salaried position. You can do what you need to do and as you need to without the societal pressures and additional drama which can be contributed to by your viewers. Trust your gut. If it ever feels too much step back into the embrace of family supports and do the self care necessary to be the best parent possible. I don’t think we can do it all. We just can’t. This is honestly (beside childbirth and pregnancy) part of the silent conspiracy that women continue to buy into. Don’t fall for it. Follow your energy, your dreams and most importantly your child in terms of their needs and what’s best for your family. Let that be the only guideline you follow.
Much love to you all in TO. Eastern Ontario misses you. xx

Advice (that you asked for): as soon as Frankie stops mouthing everything (for my son it was 20 months, but I think that's early) include her in everything! Once you can trust her not to put shards of glass or nails in her mouth it's a game changer! That way you're getting your projects done AND helping with her.
I used to be so stressed out trying to DO stuff while also caring for my son. The thing is, even if you're interrupted 30 times, the thing will still get done.
Before children, focused time means having uninterrupted time to work, post children means just living your life with them.
My child is 3 years old and I don't 'do kid activities' with him. I just do life with him and then sometimes we play! He's always included, but he's not always the focus. I'm a sahm in Europe for reference.

From this mom to you mom, it is okay to love your child with your whole heart and still need to flex your adult brain. Those first few years, you can really lose so much of yourself because your child's health and safety is your first priority since they are so squishy. As time goes on, you will start to be able to feel like you can do more for yourself with maybe a little less guilt and find more of yourself again. It is all a wonderful adventure!

Oh man going back to work was SO hard! I loved my job, but I loved my baby more. It was so tough. I love that you can work near her! You’re so blessed that way! Think about homeschooling, too! I don’t know the laws in Canada, but here it is pretty straightforward. We started in first grade and haven’t looked back (he’s 13 now!). You have plenty of time to think about it. Just wish I’d done it from day one.
You are doing an AMAZING job! She’s adorable and so happy! What a blessed life she has with you guys! You seem like you have a great community and support system. Don’t know how you feel about these things, but church is a great place to find great mom support systems. I found my tribe and it made motherhood much more fun! You need other moms who know what you’re going through day to day. I’m always here, too! ❤

Love all these open questions. I also need a sauna now. I am a mom and a childcare provider and that has left almost no room for breathing. I have carved out these places of peace for myself, working out, walks, nightime watering the garden. The sauna is definitely on my list of peaceful things.

Awww, the yard looks so wonderful. A little piece of heaven in the back yard. Frankie is so adorable. Omg, how can you not look at the sweet face all day and say, WE DID THIS?

Don't scold Oso for doing what's natural. At least he's not going on the rug. If he had a dog run, it would be one thing but he doesn't have all the room he used to have. It's not his fault. Backyard is lovely BTW 💕💕

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Where do they expect him to go, someone else's yard? He's been a country dog his whole life. And knew it was fine to go when he got outside. I'm really curious where they do want him to go??

I actually think Eamon was simply teasing the dog he was not serious. I am sure as good as that yard looks Eamon regularly cleans up after Osso. Unless they are training Osso to go somewhere off to the side away from the new grass that we have not seen (and maybe that is it as Bob has dogs too and if that was the only place that yard would look much worse) then Eamon would be aware Osso has nowhere better to go I assume, and know it is part of his job to clean up after the dog.

@@charlotte50224 I took this as a joke. Of course Oso is going to poop in the backyard.

He’s been such a loyal and great dog now he’s put to the side. A stamp sized yard no place to run or play and can’t go to the bathroom without being scolded seriously? He has very limited space. He seems depressed and isn’t the dog he used to be he’s being treated like he’s a burden. I think I know where this is going. He would be so good with the baby he’s a gentle giant and smart. It’s heartbreaking 💔 I would take him in a heartbeat. They need to stop adopting dogs!

Bec this is my first time seeing you since you and Eamon found out you were expecting! It is so nice seeing that you are living authentically. You are authentic. You are a survivor. You are a hero. You are a mother. You are blessed. My favorite love for you is simple. You are You! ❤

I’ve been going to therapy for 1.5 years now. I started out because I knew something was wrong, and I was always depressed, angry, and anxious. Coming out of my first appointment I realized that I didn’t know how much trauma I had shoved down and tried to ignore through out my entire life. I am so grateful I have found someone that cares about me enough to help me work my trauma.

This is so accurate being a mom and retiring to work! You tend to feel pulled in two directions all the time and it’s hard to find balance some days. What I’ve learned is that #1 it’s valid to feel how you feel, and #2 you can’t be the best mom you can be unless your filling your cup every single day. And whether that’s through work, or a workout, or getting a chapter in on your book. Your “mom cup” needs to be filled too!! You’re doing amazing mama!

It just popped into my head. Maybe hold the little one while you do your dreaming or contemplating. So at least she gets quality time with you. Essentially bring her into your life just like you do with your dog osso (sp?). ❤

I am in the Grandma stage of parenting. My oldest son and his lovely wife have two kids, 1 and 4 years old. I absolutely love seeing my own son become a daddy. He is the best dad ever and I am so proud of him. I knew NOTHING when I had him at age 20, never even changed a diaper and he grew up, became a Firefighter Captain and paramedic and now a husband and father in spite of me not knowing anything about being a mom. It was really hard. My youngest is a talented musician and full time dog groomer/whisperer. I am incredibly lucky to have such wonderful grown children who all moved back to our hometown, close to my husband and myself. I love watching you and Eamon find your way. And I think it's a must to take time for yourselves. You will be much better parents for it. Love you guys and glad you are back.
