The Black Hole aimed high but, under delivered on many levels. The effects are very good and so is the production design. The score is the real star of the film. But, the story and acting is very weak. 5.5/10
The laser guns are what makes it Star Wars. I don't see Star Trek at all, just disaster movie tropes in space and some forced Star Wars action and effects.
Thanks for the shout-out. I haven't seen "The Black Hole" since I was a kid in the theatre, but I remember thinking it was a grand and weird adventure. The image of the crew running across the bridge while a meteor rolls toward them is still in my mind. I'm also glad you mentioned John Barry's score. It's outstanding. And yes, "Avalanche Express" is a wild ride.
Produced during the weird/dark years of Disney. Films like Unidentified Flying Oddball, Cat from Outer Space, Witch Mountain, Apple Dumpling Gang, Midnight Madness, Condorman, Watcher in the Woods, Tron, etc.
Disney realized that Herbie Rides Again remakes weren't appealing and they wanted some of that sweet Star Wars money. But they couldn't quite help themselves and so we got this weird mixture that included a horrific death in the first twenty minutes, but then cringe inducing cute cowboy robots and a cast that seemed to be a mixture of Lost in Space and The Towering Inferno. It was a mishmash of a movie who's best feature was the Cygnus.
weird dark years? cat from outer space? it was a kid's movie. witch mountain? my sister wanted to see it. I did not. they were both kids' movies. the apple dumpling gang I am pretty sure that was Tim Conway. maybe also don Knotts so dark.
My cousin took me and my siblings to see this in the theater. He said it was the worst movie he'd ever seen. I liked it for all the Star Wars style shoot ups. Now I see what a bad job they did trying to do a disaster movie with horror elements but with the ridiculously silly robots. B.O.B. made no sense whatsoever! Just there for the kids. I give it a 5/10. Also, the other movie we thought about seeing that day was Star Trek: TMP. I think we made the better choice. I'd give that one 1/10.
I had the Cygnus model kit hanging from the ceiling over my bed when it first came out (I was 12). I didn't get to actually see the film until years later on VHS, unfortunately. The hype on TV, toys and in magazines was much better than the actual film itself, IMO.
its one of those movies that, its a good idea. cool story. some cool effects. some equal parts cheesy, corny and a little formulaic. but overall a pretty fun movie. for once i kinda wish they would remake it.
I can honestly vouch for The Black Hole when I say that it is THE GREATEST film EVER created if you have insomnia and need help getting to sleep! Seriously, I swear on my mother's grave (she's still alive....) that I've used this, and the first "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" films to help me get to sleep when everything else fails. Try it. I guarantee it or your money back!
I really wish I still had my Blackhole sction figures given how much they go for these days. Unfortunately we played and often destroyed our toys back in the day., we never considered mint and bkxed.
Question for you folks: Was The Black Hole closer to Star Wars, or Star Trek? What are your thoughts?
Neither. It's "2001" but "what if we added Judeo-Christian wibble?"

It has its own table in the cafeteria. Holster your double-barrel pistol, grab a Coke, and have a seat.
Watching a drunk Max Schell stumble throughout the movie is worth the price of admission.

You were with us in spirit, my friend.

I feel like it's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea but, you know, in space.
20,000 Light Years above the sea.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater and not sure what I was watching. It's only later that I started appreciating it.
The first 30 minutes are pretty good.
The Black Hole is really the only movie like it. Apart from Event Horizon.
We shall Go in, Through, and Beyond! 🌌 Absolutely Classic flick.🤗🌠
I (Paul) often recite that line for absolutely no reason.
@thereturnofthesonoftheshow 😆
i do not want to give spoilers what they found about the robots!
well I will give Ernest Boragine credit it least he wore his cap from WW2 in McHale 's navy!
I thought it was good

they were made at the same time. they did know not about each other.
you are wrong, they made the robots fly so they wouldn't copy r2d2 an c3po
@@jibicusmaximus4827 i was talking about star trek i should have put that in.

DW: Where’d you get that hat and why haven’t I seen it before? And Marc: same question but for the pipe.
The hat is what I (DW) like to call a deep cut, and the pipe, I believe came from Etsy. A sophisticated show requires sophisticated accoutrements.
It's Star Trek 1.5 -- elements of the The Motion Picture, especially at the end, with the mad adversary battle akin to The Wrath of Khan.
both copy 2001..

I feel that way about 2001:A Space Odyssey.

star trek the motion picture was basically a copy of the changing?
"The Changeling". That is correct. Nomad became V'ger.
Yup. I've been saying this since I first saw ST-TMP all those years ago.
the black hole was a more friendly copy of event horizon in my view
Pretty good point.
It is an unfortunate mix of two very different films and never satisfies either type of film.
Is The Black Hole a Good Movie?
No.
I’ll gladly fight defending NDt 7:34
They tried to cash in on star wars but no
