Hanoi and Manila are joining forces to boost their collective defences - as Beijing continues to target vessels in the disputed region. They worked hard for decades to gain the trust of the countries in the first island chain. Do you think they will just abandon their strategy? Their industry is at stake here. It's literally their economic partners. Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines all traded with the US and vital for its semiconductor industries and future goal of AI dominance. You are making a false analogy between Ukraine which is not a treaty ally of the US. The first island chain states had security pact with the USA and Ukraine doesn't have that they where a newly independent country from the USSR. They trusted the Russians. That was a mistake that they gave up their nukes in exchange of peace. Russia didn't honor their words. Ukraine neutrality didn't save them. They should have followed the 3 baltic states long time ago. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania had join NATO earlier as a result they where saved from Russian invasion as they where protected by NATO's Article 5. Ukraine come in late now Putin is making them regret they didn't join NATO earlier. While Finland and Sweden won't repeat the same mistake again. That is why there is very little resistance against the Americans during WW2. USA and Philippines where formally allies as it is pointless to fight the Americans when the Philippines is scheduled to become independent country since 1935. In fact USA fullfilled its promise when it come to kick out the Japanese after WW2. They lowered the American flag and raised the Philippine flag fulfilling the Tydings-McDuffie Act.
India must go in strong with this one. As an American Army veteran, I believe the world could be a brighter place if we see India rise as a friendly super power. This is the time to rise up but you must act NOW and be an early actor to maintain credibility and trustworthiness over time. I have no doubt that China and India will go to war, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years from now if we stay on the current trajectory. India has a chance to be part of a coalition between America and other countries in the region. Initiate it if you have to. Nobody wants WW3. I believe war can be avoided if India (specifically India) teamed up with America, Vietnam, Phillippines, Japan, Australia and other Pacific nations in a formal military alliance. This would send a shiver down Russia's spine because now they will truly feel isolated. Think about what the world would become over the next 20 years if our future unfolded this way? I have met many Indian people living in America and they are all good. I believe India holds the key to two futures, one where we continue the endless cycle of war, another where we break the cycle and trigger a massive boost;, space travel, cures for cancer, etc. And if we are lucky, maybe we fold a peaceful and democratic China and Russia back into the picture. If all of this where to happen, Mars will simply become a jump point to more strategic parts of our solar system and beyond. Godspeed!

India has historic precedent in having diplomatic relations with South- East Asia and the South China Sea. In that regard, it is very well India invests more in cooperation in this region as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and China are untrustworthy nations. Indian states already had peaceful trade relationships with Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in the region so it is not weird or uncommon to invest in these old relationships again. I hope The Philippines and Vietnam can draw lines so that we do not have overlapping claims. I don't mind if we lose two islands here and there and gain one or two elsewhere. Even if oil, gas and minerals are found, it doesn't realistically benefit the people of either nation anyway. Forget the fish, corals and sea turtles. Chinese fishing trawlers have taken care of that to the extent that there isn't anything much left to fight over anyway. Besides, we have the vast Pacific Ocean to our entire East.

Duterte is obviously pro-China. He practically dropped UNCLOS decision regarding PH claim to WPS in the hope that China would grant him favors which never materialized. He is surrounded by Chinese advisers and conducted dubious business with China thru Chinese contacts specifically the Pharmaly Case and POGO which is run by Chinese nationals.

@@osteicht I didn't like his war on drug campaign as we all know the the law enforcement departments aren't benevolent angels. Their promotion relies on their performance, so as a result they have incentives to keep hunting down and since during duterte's time the judiciary is basically paralyzed they can shot what they want without any form of due process. They will always say the word "ng laban". BBM although i didn't vote for him seems to be in the same page. He suspended the violent war on drugs, reverting back to the process where you need to take the suspects and put them into court which was always the most civilized way, as this gave them the proper justice. Also Duterte was over promising when he said he will solve the drug problem at the end he couldn't do it as its literally impossible to do so.

Vietnam doesnt want to be allied to either US or China. That is why vietnam is the very first country to form the ASEAN in order for the small countries like them in the southeast asia to protect their territories. On the otherhand I really respect India on how they support the Philippines on its battle against China, they sell high quality modern weapons with affordable prices, I also believe that India is the true sleeping giant in asia that china should not mess with.

@@Sacredhearts422 ASEAN was like a neutral SEATO at the time of its founding. Its original goal is to counter communism but it evolved to become an economic alliance. Indochina countries join later as the dissolution of the USSR marks the end of the cold war.

Philippines never had any troubles with its neighboring countries since I can remember, contrary to China who has been warring with all its neighbors for as long as I can remember and I’ve been on this planet for way over half a century. Makes one wonders why.

Perhaps This arrangement could be a good opportunity for Philippines to ask Vietnam for the return of Pugad Island(Southwest Cay) which they occupied in 1975 by tricking the Philippine commanding officers and its troops to a party in Parola(Northeast Cay). This could be a good test for Vietnam to show its sincerity to this new security deal.
