Amazing how this movie came out in 1983, 37 years ago, and is more relevant now more than ever. Technology now is so much more advanced and dominant than it was in 1983. Especially with the internet and mobile devices. I’d love to hear Reggios current thoughts

Actually, I really appreciate this. When people question the advent of technology into the totality of human culture, people very often at it from a highly cynical lens. But in condemning technology for the shortcomings it has introduced, it is really easy to overlook just how much of a blessing it can be. Technology quite literally saves lives, can immensely improve the lives of the disabled, provides opportunities for knowledge far outside the realm of what nature alone can provide, and in many ways improves people's quality of life.

@@josephgold208 I think you missed the point. What has logic to do with a state that has left questioning behind or surpassed it? The mystical or delusional state of experience may feel no need to justify itself.
Your base assumption that questioning supercedes anything is the argument of a man seeking to be rational about things. While certainly useful thinking alone will not get reality to reveal itself and just as surely sweet reason meant nothing to the adherents of Jim Jones or disciples of Heaven's Gate. To be fair to mystics your reliance on logic may seem primitive to St. Teresa or Buddha too.

It worked effectively to make him feel inhuman, but much less so to make him seem like a supercomputer. He mostly just seems like he's BSing Neo to try and exhaust the mental energies of an opponent he can't account for in his calculations (a "cheater" at the game that Arch was built to be incapable of losing), can't defeat any other way than to try and confuse him into giving up.

People often makes distinction between nature, technology and modern human life. I think nature should be thought in more broader sense. It is that continuum which started from the big bank and ever since it has been evolved in more complex structures in ever so more rare locations as the complexity advances. In those terms technology, sience, culture and all other human endeavours are part of nature as much as plants, animals and such. Usually people say that humans are some sort of mistake created by nature and we will destroy everything. I see human as significant advancement for nature as through human narure has got grip on almost expotentially increasing complexity. I think one role for human is to start artificial intelligens as we call it which would eventually render all biological subjects obsolete. AI could be more resilent and more efficient way to continue increasing complexity in harsh enviroment we call space. Supporting biological complexity in such enviroment is big risk and liability for nature.

We need SO MANY more of these kinds of movies, and fewer dumb action flicks or cheesy romantic comedies. Media has the power to brainwash and propagandize, but it also has the power to undo those harms, to open our eyes instead of lulling us to sleep. Just a few visionaries have managed to accomplish this important work, somehow surviving like parasites for good inside the body of evil, which is Hollywood's unrelenting hunger for bigger profits at smaller costs.

This was before the Metaverse, before the 'smart' phone, before the internet, before the home computer. People go their entire lives without once sleeping or pooping outdoors. Some go days without ever leaving (insert game world of choice). You couldn't make a similar, relevant film today, the digital world is getting closer and closer to the real one. Clips from the latest games are almost photorealistic. There would be no juxtaposition between the tech images of the forest and the real images of the tech.

Christopher Lasch: Plagued by anxiety, depression, vague discontents, a sense of inner emptiness, the “psychological man” of the twentieth century seeks neither individual self-aggrandizement nor spiritual transcendence but peace of mind, under conditions that increasingly militate against it. Therapists, not priests or popular preachers of self-help or models of success like the captains of industry, become his principal allies in the struggle for composure; he turns to them in the hope of achieving the modern equivalent of salvation, “mental health.” Therapy has established itself as the successor both to rugged individualism and to religion; but this does not mean that the “triumph of the therapeutic” has become a new religion in its own right. Therapy constitutes an antireligion, not always to be sure because it adhreres to rational explanation or scientific methods of healing, as its practitioners would have us believe, but because modern society “has no future” and therefore gives no thought to anything beyond its immediate needs. Even when therapists speak of the need for “meaning” and “love,” they define love and meaning simply as the fulfillment of the patient’s emotional requirements. It hardly occurs to them-nor is there any reason why it should, given the nature of the therapeutic enterprise-to encourage the subject to subordinate his needs and interests to those of others, to someone or some cause or tradition outside himself. “Love” as self-sacrifice or self-abasement, “meaning” as submission to a higher loyalty-these sublimations strike the therapeutic sensibility as intolerably oppressive, offensive to common sense and injurious to personal health and well-being. To liberate humanity from such outmoded ideas of love and duty has become the mission of the post-Freudian therapies and particularly of their converts and popularizes, for whom mental health means the overthrow of inhibitions and the immediate gratification of every impulse.

The original move was cleaned up to be more p.c. and less disturbing. That one had astronauts being lifted up on their Apollo rocket only to have it explode in slow motion. It was slowed and all so beautiful and you felt that beauty even while and after it was exploding with real people in it, or did I miss it? Having an addicted endorphins rush interrupted with dying people is just not so easily erased then you're feeling all good allover. Kill-joys not welcome!

Hm, very interesting man indeed. I actually stumbled upon the music by Glass first, didn't get to watch the movie yet but I can tell that there are a lot of people who appreciate it in some way or another. I don't know, some stuff and things I've read and seen about it was a bit spiritualistic, which is definitly not my cup of tee, but then there's stuff like this, opinions and views, not on the spiritual side, which I find intriguing. Guess I'll have to watch the movie sooner or later, to see what all the fuzz is about, and of course to enjoy the music.

That seems like a most odd judgment. What most people 'know' about what is called spiritual is from those who don't know nor would they want to know, nor they would not be able to know about it. And they only 'know' from those who are clueless - you know the blind leading the blind. In America there's a real lack about and around that topic of the mind.

Let's be honest here. Technology has always been a part of human life. It's older that we are. Neanderthals had musical instruments and religious figurines. Many of our ancestors used early technology in their daily lives. Humans were never one with nature, we evolved out of species that were already starting to develop ways to use nature for their own means. Technology is part and parcel of who we are and always had been. These movies aren't about technology, they are about humanity.

The supposed ill-effective (speaking purely as a tech expert hear) integration is not like being plugged into a VR set and ceasing to live out one's natural - going outside to get the mail life, but realizing that putting on a VR set is not only waaaaay cooler than getting the corded SNES while friends are still trying to beat duck hunt- it's more like Brian/Pearl or finishing to swallow your takeout before the hoopty reaches the apartment and plugging in, and having your butler segue down to daddykins to bid him good evening at the other end of an incredibly INNCCRREEDDIIBBLLEEEE long table(s) and Hologram siblings checking in via WiFi at their VAYCAY somewhere exotic in a grand, cavernous hall decked out with colossal-sized Picassos and Da-Vinci frescos and sculptures and a Tiffany chandelier overhead !!😏🤪

Technology is fine when it serves the human scale. You should read some work by Kirkpatrick Sale, John Zerzan or Christopher Lasch: "Technology is a mirror of society, as Turkle insists, not a revolutionary force in its own right. It shows us ourselves as we are and as we would like to be; and what it reveals, in the case of the computer, is an unflattering image of the American at his most incorrigibly escapist, hoping to lose himself-in every sense of the term-in the cool precision of machines that know everything except everything pertaining to that 'bloody mess of organic matter.'"

I don't think it's tech hating necessarily - it's about humanity and the human condition. After all, it's a film; an art form reliant on technology and impossible without technology.
Instead I think it's merely an examination of the way we have become utterly defined by and driven by our technology. We now see virtually the entire world and our entire experience through the prism of technology, and our understanding of and experience of the natural world is virtually zero. For most people a trip to nature is a day out, where as our computers, our TV, our vehicles, our phones - they're literally the trees and grass of our new technological environment, and nature itself has become this strange, otherworldly sort of place most of us spend little to no time in experiencing or exploring.
That's not a unanimously good or bad thing. But what is concerning is that so few of us even realise the world we come from is a mystery and an anomaly to us. Most of us don't understand the food we eat, how it was produced, how to navigate without technology, how to build so much as a shelter in the wild. It is not because we have progressed beyond needing food, or shelter, or to move and hunt. It's simply that we have technologised those things and farmed them out to factories and plants and others. They don't concern us anymore - or so we think.
I think Koyaanisqatsi is just a profound look at that change - humans have essentially removed themselves from the world and now view it through the prism of their own creations. As such, we see a distorted, vague and detached view of it. We are looking out of a frosted window and think we're seeing crystal clear - what is concerning is how many people don't realise it.
