Much of the section between Alyth Junction and Forfar was as straight as made no odds; the platelayers and gangers made it a point of honour to keep it suitable for 100mph running - and the A4 crews happily obliged. I travelled this line several times inthe 1960’s, behind A2’s,A3’s & A4’s. Really magnificent. The best runs I had were behind A3 60090. On the down “Grampian” +12 Forfar, Aberdeen O/T,return on the up”Granite City”,Forfar-Perth 321/2 miles ,booked 32 mins.,actual 29. This was a railway fans paradise,pity that it closed,as is noted by the stroke of a pen

I did more trips behind A4's from Buchanan St to Perth and Aberdeen, than I did out of Kings Cross.
