    Not bad, but as a Glazier of over 25 years I would always use expanding foam all round between window and brickwork, plus I would use trims on outer window too as its neater and adds an extra barrier from elements👍

    • @kingshearer2
      @kingshearer2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could you put expaning foam around the window first to hold it firm before putting the screws in? The reason I ask is that I've removed the old frame from an outside garage window and it didn't have a lental and so the bricks above have moved, they haven't fell but I'm thinking if I drill first it might upset them and cause a problem but if I firm the window as much as possible with foam it's less likely to happen.

    Why put packers in if a 5mm expansion gap is needed, the packers will stop it expanding ? I assume the 5mm gap is actually a manufacturing tolerance to take account of any small imperfections in the masonry and to allow a of a gap to get the window square ?

    I've always used packers to not allow a frame to sit in water and the windows are designed for water to ingress through the frame and out of seep holes or at least that's how they used to be? Also I can't understand why packers were used around the frame? How will that allow for expansion? There is no give in them Is there?

      A lot of people leave the packers in which negates the idea of a 5 mm gap because in reality there is no longer a gap .I do it the way you do it .Easy enough and expansion can go about its business

    Why on earth would you remove the bricks? Brown mastic on a white window? No expanding foam so there is now a gap for draughts? And if you need masking tape to do sealants then you shouldn't be doing it "professionally" if you could say that.

    Why would you need expanding foam on a 5mm gap between the frame and the brickwork ???. Expanding foam does what it says on the tin it bloody expands and it would just bow the frame over. Fixings at intervals is plenty sufficient then seal the exposed gap neatly. People just love to rant and criticise all the time for no reason. The fitting is top quality and cowboys just give a bad reputation for good honest fitters/builders etc.

    • @AntC1981
      @AntC1981 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Expanding foam shouldn't bow frames at all. Use foam after fitting the glazing. The foam will expand out of the edge of the frame where it meets the brickwork, so there's no pressure on the frame, it's expanding out of the frame edge, not crushing into it. It soon stops expanding and sets and stays like that forever.

      Hugh Frater - thanks for swift reply. My window installer man has put foam in, from indoors, which appears to be a thin smear. By doing it quickly it has not penetrated to the thickness of the frame/wall and there’s even gaps from what I can see - such that I can see daylight. Windows shut I can hear people talk outside. I’m thinking the old trim on the outside face (from old windows) should’ve been taken off and more foam applied.
      I’m not sure how you’d apply Compriband tape. Do I have to remove the window first, and if so, how on earth do you get the window back in without the C tape wanting to fold over?
