    I have a DW745 type 4, I had the same alignment problem. I searched and found your video and also your table saw safety video. Then I read the user manual and I found I never installed the riving knife correctly for years!!! The knob for holding the riving knife has a locking machenism, which I never know. I installed it only the half way without locking it. Once I locked it, then it aligns perfectly. This is so dangerous that I didn't lock it! I'm so lucky I haven't got injured. Thanks a lot for your videos!

    I have a DW 745-XE table saw and had the same problem as you have. I found that if you remove the black plastic cover on the left hand side of the riving knife locking screw you will find 3 set screws which allow you to move the riving knife left or right. I now have mine set to the dead centre of the blade and have no problems. I live in Western Australia and would imagine the saw wouldn't be that much different in the UK. Hope you find this useful. Kind Regards Robert.

    I had this problem as well and it’s been bugging me so decided to sort it today and found a good method. So I bought mine secondhand and didn’t even get the mitre. When I looked at where the riving knife goes in on mine you have a black oblong plate with a small Philip’s screw in each corner and a hole in the middle with a 13 m bolt in it. When you loosen the 13 mm bolt you can then push it in to release the clamp holding the riving knife and extract it. Next I got an off cut of a self adhesive foil tape measure I had and stuck a pice of it to each of the bottom parts of the riving knife that goes into the clamp. I tightened the 13 mm bolt and it was much better, although still not perfect. So I loosened the 13 mm bolt again pushed it in and removed the riving knife again. This time I added another layer of self adhesive tape measure to just the part of the riving knife nearest the front of the table. I pushed the 13 mm bolt and tried to insert it again but it was a little tight so I loosened the two Philips screws nearest the front of the table pushed on the 13 mm bolt and it slipped in. I then tightened the two Philips screws and the 13 mm bolt and it was perfect. Hope this helps.

    I chopped my DW745 riving knife down to a smidgen under the blade height within a week of getting it. It also needed a bit of force to get it exactly aligned with the blade. My garage is small and cluttered enough that it doubles as a bench much of the time, and running like that lets me drop the blade entirely out of the way, and use a cross-cut sled easily without removing the riving knife entirely. Admirable approach to using the guard where possible though - I might pick up a spare to use for when it's just lots of simple rips to get done.

      @martenveldthuis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was so much happier after I cut the top off the riving knife. That said, I do still want to build something new to re-add the blade guard, since that was obviously cut off in the process.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that would be a good balance - cut down knife most the time (mine doubles as a bench too lol!) and blade guard for repeated normal cuts. 👍

    Ok just got mine today and had the same problem but I have solved it without the need for brute force. Contained in the box with one of the components are some small rectangular pieces of metal with holes in. I have no idea what they are for as they are not mentioned in the instructions......
    Whether they are shims or not I have no idea. But that's what I have used them for. So basically I wedged one of the shims into the clamping mechanism along with the rithing knife. I just wedged one corner into the clamp next to the blade and moved it about until the knife was parallel with the blade and then tightened the clamp. Now it's all perfectly level! And I didn't need my mallet after all. I took some callipers to the shim and it's only 0.2 mm thick but is just enough to make the rithing knife level. Hope this helps some folks

    • @per-andersjansson
      @per-andersjansson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did exactly the same with my new DW745. There was three shims in the box and using one of them solved it for me.

    Mine was the same - out of shape, and I bought mine around the same time. I hit mine with a hammer too! I also re-shaped mine to be low profile - that way I never have to take it out. I never use the blade guard but personally would never use it without the riving knife fitted

    Thanks for the link Andy. Just had mine apart to see if I could see any adjustment screws. The riving knife holder is just a cast block with no adjustment, and if I added the shims I'd be pushing it farther out of alignment, I my case the block needs scimming by about a 1mm and then use the shims to fine tune the alignment. To get to the block you need to remove the rear cover and then the dust cover material to then get at two 5mm Allen Bolts to remove the block, Sadly I don't have anything to accurately remove the extra material so I'll have to adjust the knife in the same way as you have. Now I have just to put it all back togethre now. Was interesting to see a bit more of the saw and how its put together.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't even see where you'd put the shims on mine - the slot is pretty much the width of the knife - certainly no room for 2-3mm worth of shims. All very odd. 😀

    • @Simon_W74
      @Simon_W74 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right at the bottom ot the riving knife holder, if you tilt the saw over to 45 degrees at full height then you'll just be able to make them out. Then the shims go between the riving knife block and the mounting bracket. Time wise your solutions is a lot faster and easier. It a pity that Dewalt didn't see this issue farther than putting in a few shims that are in my case as good as paper saw blade.

    I've had a problem with my riving knife pushing my pieces towards the right. At first, when I saw your video, I thought, "WTF, hit it with a hammer?? Who is this Neanderthal!" LOL. However, desperation took over and I gave that knife a good whack and wouldn't ya know it, now it's lined up perfectly parallel with the blade. Genius!

    Been using a similar saw for 10's of years, got my thump on the blade Monday, spent the rest of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and now going to be Thursday in Hospital trying to get it fixed. I have ordered a riving knife and top guard, even though to my knowledge, the saw has never had one.

    I had 7470 model and the knife miss align since I changed the blade. Today I almost applied your technic but unfortunately I dont have a big hammer so I remove all knife locking parts out and find out that the knife can be shifted(to the right) by putting 2 washer in the 2 holding nuts. After a couple of tried, the 0.9mm washer thickness made my knife perfectly align with the blade. Thank for your video anyway.

    Mine is the MK4 2018 version and its still bad, So off to get the really really bad hammer it is. I now have two riving knives as I mentioned before, I bought one just to cut it down to match the blade height, They are both out of alignment, I did get a small bag of shims and honestly don't think they will be enough. I did come very close to buying the DW7491, but with your review of the saw I went for the 745 with mobile stand, and the extra cash saved bought a compressor for when I got round to putting up an fence and erecting a Pergola and decking, as a framing nailer will be required as there is no way I could hammer all the nails in by hand.

    I have the same, or a very similar, model on a DW mobile stand, which suits me perfectly for carting it around and stowing it under a shelf. Generally I really like the saw (for my needs), but I do hate the riving knife. It's flimsy(ish), and I have to remove it for certain operations, as it is higher than the blade. I do, however, put it back afterwards (mostly, anyway...). Mine too is slightly out of alignment, but I never realised it may affect the cuts; I'll have to investigate that. Thanks!

    Lol. I thought you were joking with the intro and the hammer. I just got a DWE7485, and the riving knife is misaligned, causing the workpiece to slightly catch on the way through, and maybe throw off the cut? I need to play with it some more. Might need some "percussive maintenance".

    My Dewalt 744 does not have any adjustment screws either. I solved the problem by shimming 3 decking cards at the bottom of the attachment plate on the left side ( my riving knife was too far right) and it worked perfectly. No banging necessary.

  • @simonh73
    @simonh73 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It seems like the DW745-XE version (that the US videos show) has a much better riving knife and guard arrangement. I think that can be tweaked too with 4 adjustment screws for alignment! I found a small shim of painters tape in the top corner where it inserts into the fastening plate was enough to move mine the fraction needed. The knife itself is flat, its the mounting that''s not great.

    As you are using a non standard blade (is the riving knife suitable for that blade), looks like the kerf is much wider than the riving knife? Also I think it is more dangerous to have an out of line riving knife, than removing the crown guard. I have a newer Dewalt with a flush riving knife, which I would highly recommend as it allows for partial height cuts (half lap, rebates, etc). These machines with less robust riving knives are more dangerous than the big machines with rigid ones and safety is really down to good technique and I agree they can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. Thanks for the update.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Riving knife is 2.3mm and blade is 2.8mm kerf so that allows 0.25mm either side of the cut, which is pretty near perfect. The flush knife is defo worthwhile. 👍

    My early 2017 DW745 looks identical to yours but the riving knife on mine is perfectly aligned. When tilted it does go out of whack slightly with the guard on but not to the extent that yours does in this video. When the guard is off it is fine. Perhaps Dewalt fixed the problem or maybe there were manufacturing defects in some of them but it's nothing a lump hammer can't fix I guess lol.
    Mine also came with some thin, rectangular metal parts. I didn't know what they were for but after watching this I now know they are for shimming the riving knife for use with different width blades.

    I bought a DW745 in April 2016, and had riving knife problems from new. The RK itself appeared to be straight, but the mounting block for it was at an angle, so that at cutting height, the RK ended up about 1.5 mm to the right. When the fence was on the right, the RK forced the piece I was cutting against the fence with so much pressure, that it was difficult to push through at a steady speed. When the fence was on the left, it pulled the piece away from the blade, so the cut was terrible.
    I emailed DeWalt, and eventually sent the saw back to them for repair. A couple of weeks later, I got the saw back with a perfectly aligned RK. I don't know what they did - but I suspect they 'fixed' the mounting block in some way because I think the RK is still straight.
    If anyone has a link to where you can get the new RK that doesn't protrude above the blade, a lot of us would be interested ...

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Ridgid and have the same problem with the RK being crooked since new. As a new woodworker, I didn’t know what was going on at first because like you, I had a lot of problems pushing wood through because the RK was pushing into the fence.
      I could not adjust it enough to get it back into alignment. It’s crooked both horizontally and vertically. After watching this vid I pulled the RK and found it is bent. It wasn’t obvious, but after measuring from many angles and shining light around it, it’s definitely bent!

    I have watched your videos and bought a DW745 type 4. If you put the knife on a.flat surface is it straight? Can fix that, if not. Is the blade thinner/thicker than standard? Can fix this with (supplied) shims, if not. The block with spring loaded bolt is fixed with two Allen bolts. Each shim is 0.008” I found the riving knife closer to fence with a standard blade, but with a Freud blade it was closer to the opposite side. So adding shims wasn’t required and/or good for most blades. US version uses a different method with three Allen bolts to change the angle - too complicated as shims move it in/ out but keep it parallel on the UK version. Of course there may be minor changes for type 4 so they could all be a bit different. Great saw BTW.

    Hello
    I liked the video and the great explanation. I have a question. I would like to replace the saw tray with a better saw tray for a clean cut. I would like, if you will, to describe me with a great saw tray with the specifications you requested. I have the same Deault saw that you have in your workshop. I would like you to write the number and type, and can I get it from Amazon. Thank you and I wish you a nice day, safety and security
    My greetings

  • @alfredneumann4692

    Of course the big hammer is nonsense. You should use a good recoilles hammer, put the riving knive on a absolutly flat surface (an anvil would be good, but a hardwood is ok) and look after every hit, if its ok. Don't use a vise. I had the same problem with my riving knife in my saw. Took me 30 minutes and this guy was so perfect flat and surprise, fits.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to confirm, I'm *trying* to bend the riving knife not flatten it! It's the riving knife holder that's out of skew. 😀👍

  • @NobleNobbler

    Wow, at 1:32, that little bit of pressure on the riving knife makes the saw blade move? 4:35 Precision wood working at it's finest, lol. If all else fails, use a really big hammer ;-)

    • @GosforthHandyman

    I commend you for putting out videos with the safety features attached, but I feel as if you probably did the opposite of what you intended in this case. You showed how crap they are (at least on site saws) and why people will would want to remove them to perform the cut as intended. :p

      Sorry, I meant in the previous video. You were trying to demonstrate that guards should be used, but it was clearly causing an issue due to poor quality (whether is was related to the riving knife or not). So it didn't really help your argument. BUt I totally agree, the safety equipment should be used! .. just next time, have it working properly to help your argument :p ... Glad you have it sorted now though.

    I have the same DW745.
    It is incredible that someone does not read the manuals, you should never hit something that is already configured at the factory.
    The instructions for aligning the ribing knife come in the manual and are 3 small screws with an allen key that adjust for the angle and center this knife. But I repeat never hit things so important and related to safety.
    I already located the 3 screws and tightened properly.
    Greetings.
