I'm pretty sure that the relay on the cassette port is for motor control. Many cassette recorders used to have a small jack socket next to the audio jacks that allowed you to turn off the cassette drive motor remotely. This was often used on hand-held microphones to allow the user to pause the recording via a switch on the microphone housing. Microcomputers used this feature to pause the tape between loading or saving sections of programs.
