This video covers sealing the seams, replacing a peeling polyurethane coating and refreshing the durable water repellent coating on the rainfly. Watch it, then get ready to give your tent some TLC.

    I bought snugpak lonosphere bivi tent and tried it out and it's waterproof rating is great as reviews says but I got soaked as it's waterproof rating isn't that good.
    Nice to know video as I need to get this waterproof as it's a compact lightweight bivi tent.
    Thanks for video!

    All off? do you have any idea in how much sealant tape is flaking of the tent I took 3.5 hours cleaning with alcohol and then the tent has another sealant on and I was taking it off by rubbing so much trying to remove all the tape, some of it it’s impossible to remove as it is not fully dry so now I have to seal in the outside,put a spray coating and go over the inside hopefully removing the tape and then retapping the hole tent lots of work and lots of patients.

    Is it recommended to apply seam sealer to a new tent?

      Can someone please answer this? Do I use both? Links to the products would be nice too.

      The seams (in "sealing seams") are the joins between pieces of fabric, and they need to be sealed with a special seam sealant. Seams are more prone to leaks because they aren't tightly knit like a single piece of fabric is.
      "Repair coating" refers to the polyurethane coating that covers the whole underside of the fly fabric. The nylon fabric isn't waterproof on its own -- it's the polyurethane layer that prevents water from soaking through.
      The DWR coating goes on the *outside*, and it's a hydrophobic finish that repels water before it can even soak into the nylon. When you see water beading up on a surface and then falling down in droplets, that's usually because of a DWR coating.

    Im so dumb... I accidentally applied waterproofing silicone spray to the inside seams of the tent and not the outside. I didn't use much at all though, I did such a light spray. Will I be ok? I also only left it to dry for 5-10 min and packed it back up? any advice or recommendations? I'm camping next week and am so scared that I ruined my brand new tent :(

      Hi Thru350! Great question. The process is a little different and outlined here: www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/rainwear-dwr.html. Happy Trails!

    Seam seal, waterproof... which one first

      I'd assume seam seal then a general waterproof.

    I have a 2 year old Marmot Limelight never used. Do you recommend DWR waterproofing the fly, tent bottom and footprint just in case?
    Thank You!

      Probably not necessary, but I always spray new tents with a water repellant / UV protectant out of the gate.

    My seams have disintegrated into a sticky mess. How do I remove this sticky residue?

      I believe that's what the rubbing alcohol and cleaning pad with one side having the green abrasive top is for...then apply the Gear Aid Seam Sealant

    Looks like it's going to be cheaper and easier to just get a tarp and throw over.

    • @rockyiligan
      @rockyiligan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not ideal if you go ultralight backpacking. Additional tarp means additional weight to carry.

    Things I wish they told me when I bought my tent…..packing up a wet tent :(

    • @TheRealTomSelleck
      @TheRealTomSelleck ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly it’s only a mistake people make once. I packed away a tarp that I thought was dry and it wasn’t.

  • @digitaldirt777
    @digitaldirt777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok, I see why only have two responses, you are way to evolved in the process for normal people. You need to say wash the tent, let dry and seal the seams with.....a product that works!!!
