I tried to take a bus through the drive through!

  • Not all charter bus trips are filled with fun destinations and great food exploration. I drove a simple day trip going to a tiny town in the middle of no where. Rossville IL. Finding a good place for lunch didn't pan out. Desperate means calls for desperate measures. I found my self pulling a 45 foot motorcoach through a Steak N Shake drive through.
The best part of this trip was that I got to drive an old D 4505, a bus that brings back so many cherished memories, a bus that used to make up almost our entire fleet, and now there are only two of these old work horses left.
I learned a lot driving these buses during my beginning years as a motorcoach driver.

The way you incorporate the "B" roll into the story is really cool. Like the way you film the bus door closing as if you're about to leave; it gives us (or at least me) a feeling of "being there". Another great video, James!

LOL Remembering McDonald's employees freaking out when buses pull into the lots, let alone 3 buses. Only to have three drivers walk in and order. The manager was not a happy camper. As they loaded up on fries and had a bunch of hamburgers cooking. But we told him that we would return with the buses full, and did. Made him a little more happier that day.

Not to defend Steak and Shake (and I dont know how the internals of a ordering stand works). But is there a sensor to alert the drive through order taker, under the concrete pad, by the menu? (Like an advanced green turn signal). The way you were parked, it may not of triggered the sensor and they had no idea you were there.
But judging by the wait time was; you were done a favour. By not having to order and leave.

    Hi James
I watched this video 3 times. It was funny everyone has done something unusual on a trip. I accidentally dumped my toilet on a motel parking lot.
It brought back memories even a tear. My company's 3 line hauls went through towns like Rossville. Seeing the stores on Main Street reminded me of pulling up in font of the drug store and picking up or dropping off passengers or freight. Then driving on the two lanes and on to the Interstate into the cities we serviced.
When PCC has a trip does someone pull the coach into a garage and the driver does his pre-trip inside and not on the yard in the rain?
How about "you became a coach operator instead of holding a steering wheel".
You said the D45 wasn't hi-tech I laughed at the pull string for the window shade and remembered your experience with the Prevost window shade. Fantastic video seeing you go to and through Rossville sure brought back memories.

In some places it's actually illegal. (it's dangerous for staff and the public.) We've had to walk to the window a few times after driving "through" the kiosk. (wouldn't fit under the little canopy.) Gotta be careful of the "captive" drive-thru. (not that I couldn't just drive over their curbs.)

James I’m sure it’s probably already been pointed out or mentioned, all modern day drive thrus implement inductance loop coil metal detection imbedded into the concrete pad or area right in front of the ordering menu board. Based on your parking it was enough metal to change the inductance to trigger an alert alarm to the employees inside. Next time pull up forward and then reverse back in closer and over the concrete or area near the ordering menu.

I am not at all surprised by the horrible experience you had at that Steak 'n Shake. In October 2017, my wife and I visited that very same Steak 'n Shake you stopped at while we were on our way home to Minnesota from Georgia during a night's stop in Urbana. We ate inside, and it took forever to get our food. Even when they brought it out, they forgot my shake! Finally my wife was able to get the attention of another waitress after our original one was busy chatting with friends, and I eventually got it. We won't be back to that one! Now...for a good Steak 'n' Shake experience when you get the craving, go to the one in Danville - I-74 Exit 215B, head north on Gilbert St. (US-150/Illinois Route 1), and it's on your right headed north. It will be worth the drive for you! We've been to that one a few times on our travels through your area over the years, and they have had FABULOUS customer service!

This is one of the many reasons they mostly (partly?) went out of business. (the only one's still in NC are around Charlotte. The only one on the east coast - outside FL - is in Myrtle Beach SC.) They were ALWAYS slow as crap. The whole "we don't cook it until you order it" is not sustainable for any fast food business. The CEO's claims that table service made it unprofitable is prime proof of massive mismanagement... there are thousands of mom-n-pop places _with table service_ that doesn't have problems. (and they get your order to the table quickly, correctly, and with a smile.)

Just discovered this channel after watching your Motor Coach world for a while. Having done video editing myself, I have to tell you that your shot composition and editing are excellent. As others have commented, it's like we're following along with you. And it's even more incredible to realize that you are actually doing this without a second cameraperson - means you walk into the room once to set up the camera and come in again to film the shot. Over and over. But it obviously shows in the end product!
And what may seem to be a routine job to you is made glamorous to others by your videos. Easy to forget that a lot of people aspire to drive a coach. I remember leaving the lobby of a hotel to get in my old bus, and a young guy asked if it was mine, and I said 'yes'. He said 'Way to roll!'. Steak n Shake was obviously minimally competent with minimal service. When their performance is stretched, they transition to sufferable.
They didn't answer because they thought there was 40-50 passengers pushing their minimal service beyond their capacity capability.
I'd write a Yelp/Google Maps review referring to this Motorcoach World episode.
As far as what Bus Drivers earn, it has to be unique hardware to busses (& not on planes, cars, & boats). I can think (with my limited knowledge of busses) two things that fulfill this: 1-control lever that opens the door -or- 2- control that kneels the bus.
Between the two, the most unique hardware to busses (though not all) of all vehicles, is 'Kneelers'.
    Bus Drivers earn their Kneelers.

The issue with any modern drive-thru is they use a magnetic pick up (similar to stop lights) to detect vehicles. If you don't stop over the loop, they don't know you're there. (and no one is looking at the cameras.) But in this case, those cars had been there A WHILE, so they were just f'ing incompetent, which is sadly the norm for almost all fast food places.
(I've been asked to back up to re-trip the window loop to reset their count from a drive-off.)

James, watching this laughing. Being a OTR Truck Drive I had to do this many times. For future reference it won't beep them unless like 500 lbs hits the plate under the concrete. There was a Dairy Queen in Whapeton, ND that was "Drive Thru Only" same boat you where in noone answering me, no one answering phone. Luckily a mini van pulled up, I waved at her to pull up, she did it triggerd them inside I told them I was a walk up, she said "Cars and Passenger Vehicles Only in the Drove thru" I said Ma'am how is a truck driver or someone in a larger vehicle to order that can't fit in the drive through? She never responded. So I placed my order, walked up to window duck walking the whole way as of I where sitting in a vehicle. Got to the window, made the sound of setting air brakes, acted like I had to roll my window down with a hand crank window, gal opens the window and says "Can I help you" then she looked out saw I had no car but was sitting in a position as if I had been driving a car then she looks at me and says wait looks again then all 4 employees started laughing like I have never in my life heard and each of them crammed into the window to see what was going on, then seeing that I was not actually driving a car, they looked at me and went how did you activate the intercom system I said well to be honest ..... I had a car pull up, I told the driver to pull up with a hand signal, she did and I told her apparently I am not heavy enough to activate the intercom. Oh and they should be ordering now. And ma'am, I'd like to pay for their order. Yet I didn't know it was a van of 7. That was a bill. But well worth it for their help, the times we where on and the laugh.

P.S.: Don't do this to your coach. I was 9 hours from home in the middle of nowhere with no food, getting an attitude from the only restaurant in the area. It was this, or don't eat.

Fifteen minutes? Ha! That’s nothing. My wife once took 29 minutes to get through our local McDonald’s drive through here in Australia!!! Also, I’m wondering if they just didn’t know you were there. Some drive through speaker systems are pressure activated, whereby a vehicle passes over a pressure pad in the ground that alerts staff inside to your presence.

I used two GoPro's in a rental car running together , and just the editing and sync work to create clean cuts is crazy. When I watch vlogs now, my mind is always appreciative of the work and the tricks we do, like in this vlog where I know you filmed yourself getting on the bus after you set the camera up , then getting off the bus, but used the off clip earlier in the vlog and the on clip later on, it works :-). You do have a nice storytelling rhythm. It's great to watch

A great video, a great editing job and a simple trip. I liked this video. As for the pilot wings thing, pilots get their wings.....bus drivers get their wheels. Make a little gold Steering wheel with wings pin. As for the eating part.....I can totally understand. Yesterday (12/12/21) I ate at Jacks with my niece then met up with my sister and I got in the car with her and her Husband. They stop at a Japanese Restaurant. My heart sank as I was full and I wanted Japanese. So....I met myself in the middle and got it to go home. If I was you on the bus, after dropping my passengers off at their last stop I would have taken the bus and picked up supper for later! Keep up the awesome vlogs. I always wanted to be a bus driver (school bus, motor coach it did not matter then) as a kid. Disability (blindness/low vision) prevented that. But I get to experience it through these videos. That is why I love your sign off on Motorcoach World "...If you are watching this you are part of the Motorcoach World". Closest I shall ever be to my childhood dream..

Well James, it's time for another story from my adventures in a motorcoach. I pulled into a McDonalds and as I was about to unload the workers in the store ran out to the doors and locked them (It was about 7pm). This was before the pandemic. I walked up and they refused to open up. I decided to pull the same stunt you did, I pulled thru the drive-thru and opened my window, promptly giving my order for about 50 people on the speaker. The people on the other end were not amused! The manager ran out and started screaming at me that I couldn't do that.... The end of the story is they ended up opening the doors for us after all! :)
BTW I learned to drive in an MCI MC-7 with a 4-speed manual transmission. I didn't get to drive an automatic transmission until the 90's on a regular basis. I still occasionally slam my left foot to the floor looking for a clutch petal coming to a stop! I miss the stick shift coaches, in particular when I drive ski trips into the Rockies.

@@donalddodson7365 All motorcoaches have non-synchro transmissions, this includes 3, 4, 5 and 10 speed versions. You have to always double clutch them unless your good at "speed shifting" (using no clutch to shift). The problem if you miss a gear while speed shifting is you can really screw up the gears in the transmission.

I agree with Terry C from 2 months ago when he asked if there was a sensor in the concrete (or even on the display) to detect a customer's vehicle at the speaker. If I was one of the drivers at the window I would have not felt any peer pressure to vacate the window! Did you tell them that you were waiting? Did you ever find out what was going on?
I've had frustrations like this even when I was driving a cutaway. Motorcycles and monster trucks have the same problem at stop lights.
Regardless, I found a Wendy's in New Mexico that had no exterior structures within their large parking lot to hinder vehicles, so I went there often. I had to learn how to funnel the food through my window, though....
