I have been proudly registered Independent all my adult life. I live in a deep red state, so voting for the former "republican party" was always part of the deal. Literally almost no Democrats to vote for in my district. But I have voted straight 'D' ticket since 2000, after 5 crazies on the "supreme court" told the entire nation that our votes do not count.
I am not a fan of the Corporate Democratic Party, either. So remaining Independent has been my personal protest against them. Not identifying with a political party that tries to ignore Progressives like myself.
But I have to tell you, this Fascist move in Tennessee is something I have been watching for ever since 2016. The mask is TOTALLY off the former "republican party". What happened in the Tennessee legislature is just the beginning. You can count on every Red state legislature to get busy on a host of new "rules" to expel ANY dissenting voices of the opposition party.
I may hate Corporate Oligarchy, but at least my vote still counts a little in a Corporate Oligarchy - I have to vote for whomever the Corporate-owned party tells me to vote for, and it will not be a Progressive a majority of the time, if ever. Blatant Fascist Authoritarianism from the former "republican party" is where I draw the line.
      Time to pick a side.

German here. I guess it's fair to say that we have a bit of experience voting for parties that clearly say that they want the people to shut up and obey. Why did the people nevertheless vote for them?
Because they WANT to be ruled. Being ruled means that you aren't responsible for what's happening in your life. You were just following orders. If being free means being possibly held accountable, many will prefer to not be free (doesn't matter what they say in their Facebook profile).

Read Mephisto. Author Klaus Mann shows how the nazi regime came to power by playing on peoples cowardice. One of the characters, an angry young nazi, realizes afterwards that they were not improving his life, and all their talk of workers rights and dignity for germany was hot air. He ends up dead soon after.
This is what will happen to the supporters of fascist movements. They will be useful during the rise, then thrown to the wolves. Fascism is not about building, they will strip rights from people until there is no one left to strip rights from, forming a smaller and smaller in-group. It's a death cult.

I watched a couple of hours of the hearing yesterday and haven't yelled at my screen like that in a long time. It broke my heart to see such behavior. I was hoping the fact that it was being televised might humble or shame some of the supermajority. It seemed to embolden them. One of the Reps said, rather smugly, that "it wasn't a death sentence." Adding that Mr. Jones can simply run for office again, be reinstated, and CAN'T ever be charged for the same offense again. How kind.
Then I found a bit of hope in this from the NYT:
"What would happen to the vacated seats?
Special elections would be held to fill the seats of the expelled lawmakers. Mr. Jones and Mr. Pearson will be able to run again in the elections and be re-elected to their seats.
Local governing bodies in each district can appoint temporary representatives - who could even be the expelled lawmakers themselves - to hold the seats until the special elections are held. Multiple members of the Metropolitan Council, which oversees Nashville, have pledged to nominate Mr. Jones to his seat as a temporary appointee."
As always, we love you Beau. Thanks for all you do.

@@wirelesmike73 Bless you. I won't fault anyone who feels like they need to get out of states like TN that are currently in fascist tailspins, for their own safety. It really has come to that for some citizens. But any of you who can stay, and vote, and **fight**, have my utmost respect. I've spent some time in Tennessee. It's a state with a lot of natural beauty, kind-hearted people, and positive cultural heritage. Like you, I love my home in Virginia. Much of my family has lived here for generations. I pray that your home over on the other side of the mountains from me will soon see better days.

I lived in Tennessee. I made a decision in my early 20s to leave. And yes, I have seen the things you're referring to. I remember what it was like when all the women and black people were no longer in the room and how the racist bullshit just comes tumbling out. As a white male, it was always automatically assumed that I was part of the club, and so I vividly remember, many times, the racial slurs, the hateful tropes, on full display. The facade of "southern hospitality", the mask of friendliness, the pretense of the "righteous christian" -- all of it exposed as a fraud. Nothing about what we saw today surprised me even a little bit. No one with a good heart could fault you for wanting to distance yourself from it. I have never regretted my decision to leave the so-called "volunteer state". Do what you need to do. Life is too short to spend it fending off ignorance and intolerance.

Imagine if an employee went to his boss and said, "You will sit down, shut up and do as you're told." That's exactly what the Tennessee state legislature is saying to Tennesseans. Don't let them do it. You are their employer and they don't get to call the shots.

I'm a Tennessean who had moved away, but found myself back here a little over 10 years ago because of circumstances beyond my control and am now the sole carer for my mother after she had a stroke. In that time, I've seen local elections go from an actual choice to the Republican candidate running unopposed. And it's always a forgone conclusion that the Republican will be elected as the state rep from this area. I vote for the Democrat, but it's like trying to stop a tsunami with plastic wrap.
I'm deeply disturbed by what's happening here. But I truly feel that there is nothing I can do. Not to mention that I'm a bit preoccupied with caring for my mother while also being disabled myself. I have absolutely no energy for anything else on top of that.
So, y'all, please keep in mind that there are those of us here in TN that are not okay with what's happening here, but at the same time are not in a position to do anything about it. It's kind of hard to when we aren't even given a choice when voting. It's not only frustrating, it's frightening - especially when we can see it's more than likely just only a matter of time before they come for us, too.

I'm a life-long East Tennessean. My family has voted republican since it was a dirty word before the War between the States. This is not the party they supported.
And I've heard from a lot of similar people, people who have watched the state government lurch into Trump Populism led by the Republican party at all levels. And don't see today's party reflecting their beliefs.
I suspect that a number of state representatives & senators will find serious primary opponents next year. And those who survive to the general won't have the support outside of the populist core that's taken over.

I live here, and was looking forward to a video from you about what went down here yesterday. I’m a Gen Xer that’s spent my younger years out in the fight, but this last half a decade has really beat me down, I’ll admit it. I still vote, even in locals and primaries, but I haven’t been out in the streets, haven’t been calling and emailing, organizing. I sat and watched the entire assembly yesterday, and I feel a lot of negative feelings. I’m disgusted, enraged, and heartbroken. But I also have some feelings I haven’t felt in a while. I feel hopeful, inspired, and there is a fire raging in me that was nearly snuffed out. Those two young men are gonna do very big things, and I’m going to be out there fighting with them and Gen Z, and every other generation, because I’ll tell you one thing for certain-these men aren’t martyrs, they’re catalysts, and we are gonna flip this state upside down and inside out. The racist fascist GOP needs to start packing their shit up! Thank you for giving attention to our battle on your platform, Beau. I’m sure it’s one of many to come in the near future 🫶

Me, I've got two different pride flags to march under, so I know I'm fairly high up on the hit list for these people. But it's a LONG list. They'll work their way down it if you let them. Got melanin in your skin? They'll get around to you. Maybe a name that's a little hard to spell? They'll get around to you. Ever had a miscarriage? Voted for a Democrat? Voted for a Black candidate? Been to a Pride parade? Let your kid have a gay friend? Haven't been to church lately? Got a library card? They'll surely get around to you. Did your church support the guy who lost the primary, and the guy who won is pissed about it? You're up next for persecution!
