    Hi Wade, this video typifies one of the reasons I enjoy your channel so thoroughly- you seem to be such a grounded, pleasant, kind person! Clearly you enjoy “finer” things, but you do so without seeming snobbish, so it’s a pleasure to savor the experience with you vicariously. And you also seem to get just as much enjoyment out of simple, basic things, appreciating them just as much as high-end items and gadgets. Thank you for the kindness that led you to make this vid (and those to follow in the series); it demonstrates your warmth toward people, and your desire to include as many different folks as possible in the simple joy of savoring the outdoors. All the best to you & your family; stay warm, be safe, and breathe deep in all that fresh air!! 😄💐

      Oh boy that was such a nice comment thank you so much! Its kind expressions such a yours that encourage me to keep making videos. It's TRUE though, only basic items are required to enjoy the outdoors. We are out there to enjoy nature arent we?
      Take care and be safe, Wade👍😀

    Amen. Not only does the budget mindset spark creativity, it also makes for an awesome treasure hunt. Support those thrift shops and they will take care of you too.

      That's true Doug! It's easy to buy something online and flex the ol credit card but a great bargain from a thrift shop is more fun! You meet some interesting folks too! Take care brother!

    Thanks for doing this type of vid Wade. There is to much marketing going on from people who seem to just want to showcase there high dollar items. There is no reason to break the bank just to go spend some time in the outdoors. And there is nothing low quality with military gear for example. I have gear that I’ve been using on and off for 30 years, was not high dollar back than but still high quality today!

    Great presentation of budget yet quality gear. I guess, unfortunately, once you get into the bushcraft/primitive camping arena one gets to be a gear junkie. I’m now in therapy working to overcome my addiction. 😁
    Once you get over 10 of each C you have over 50 items right there. Then you branch off to the other 5 C’s and you then have to kick a family member out of their bedroom to store everything. Totally out off control. 😂
    Seriously though, your point is very well taken and glad you’re making the point. Thanks Wade!!

      I love the high end stuff too, works of art sometimes, and many times they are worth the money but it's also possible to get by with less.
      Thanks for the great comment!👊🌲👍🍻

    Great subject Wade and video. I really didn’t have much In expensive gear until a few years ago. I’m 57 and it’s always been camping to me, but thanks to you and many other great channels I have really enjoyed the last few years of Bush-Craft. I picked up a new pack and a few other things and I really enjoy using them. But I haven’t gone crazy buying stuff. I’ve always said quality has its place.

    Great advice! I have that Corona...Lowe's $19.95
    It's actually a really good saw. Keeps an edge and has a real good grip.
    I have 3 Gransfors and 1 on the way but my favorite axe is a small axe like that came from my family's old farm owned by my grandfather. You just can't beat sentimental tools.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree about the sentimental tools brother. Theres something about a Gransfors as well. They are dang beautiful to look at and a joy to use, I love the few I have. Take care bud and thanks for watching!

  • @bucknash
    @bucknash 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love this subject.
    I agree with so much of what toy David here and I like that you emphasized the fact that budget doesn't mean poor quality.
    It is very easy to get sucked into "latest is greatest" mentality, especially when you're into long distance hiking. But I often remind myself that people were doing this outdoor thing since before we were actually people. So surely we can do it with ten year old gear.

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's right Buck. It's nice to treat ourselves once in a while to a shiny new piece of gear but not having it shouldnt keep us out of the woods. Thanks for watching brother, take care👊

    One man's junk, another's treasure...awesome video! Great ideas on where to find some quality stuff without paying an arm and a leg! Have the Wal-Mart cup, got a Stanley 2 cup that I use for water/pot there as well for a little more. Plastic tab on top is melting, but can be replaced...it nests with the cup and works well with little BSR stove (some places I go don't allow fires). Also-love wool blankets! So warm! Thank you!

    Excellent video Wade :) Some very valid points. It can be tricky when starting off. Knowing what to but without wasting your money. I try and buy the best I can afford. This is mainly down to the build quality. But like you say, there are plenty of options for buying quality gear for a reasonable price. You showed some good options for good tools that don't cost the earth :) Have a great weekend brother, all the best, Mark :)

    • @Woodswalker1965
      @Woodswalker1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mark, thanks for watching. I enjoy good quality gear. If I need to spend $$$$ I will absolutely, especially when I know it will last for many years. It's nice to have options and you're right , when you're just starting out it's not smart to spend money on gear that may not last. Take care buddy see you on the next one👊

  • @baronedipiemonte3990
    @baronedipiemonte3990 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's about enjoying it... It doesn't have to be "posh" or "ritzy". A $25 bush knife on Amazon properly sharpened and maintained works as well as a $100 blade by _____? A $50 45-50L backpack well chosen and not abused does as well as _______? An empty 3/4 - 1pd coffee can with the right cuts and holes makes for a hell of a good field stove. And I don't have an axe LoL ! Don't have any titanium either...

    Tha Corona hand saw is awesome, and is my go to saw when I'm backpacking due to its light weight and effective razor tooth blade. I had the larger 10" saw but downsized to the 7" to save even more weight. I'm still able to saw up plenty of wood for my campfires... -21 degree? Yikes! Stay warm my friend!🇺🇸✌🍺

    Mindset, skill-set, tool-set.... the first two are free! I've brought two "junky" Plumb hatchets back to life, and I'm more likely to pack one of them than my pricey Gransfors Small forest axe (it is just too precious, I can't imagine dinging it). How many people have axes they don't know how to sharpen?

Yes I get it that quality gear lasts a hell of a lot longer lol. If I get something then my boys want that same exact thing hahaha so I essentially buy 4 of each. Military surplus is quality and usually how I go, just not from eBay...had some bad experiences there. 😂 ok wow I didn’t mean to leave a chapter book for you to read! You hit the nail right on the head when you spoke about your flint and steel, Quote "something fun to play around with" and that sir, is the whole point, its fun, A glamour hobby for some? yes i would agree there are a few that would fit that description but not many, using hand tools, learning new skills whilst enjoying the outdoors is the one thing we all like doing and if you can afford good quality gear then great, we shouldn't feel guilty that we may have some of the best gear going you've probably worked your arse off to get it anyway. I've always said learn how to use your tools ⚒ first and then splash out if you can or if you want to, you just don't need to unless its -30! and you don't want crap gear that's going to let you down in that or your going to be in big trouble...... . oh by the way I thought you were playing space invaders 👽 then i realised you were stamping out the snow LOL..... just kidding :-) great talk on tools Wade, right behind you on that one regards Matt 🍻

    Great video wade I agree with other subscribers in gear collecting takes over I've been thru that phase but the most important thing is getting out there and enjoying the nature the word bushcraft is thrown around nowadays along with the commercialism that goes with it so many channels are just 30 minute adverts and endorsements on gear that's brand new and unused people new to it get caught up I've selected a handful of what I consider honest bushcraft channels that give an honest review and incorporate skills not just boiling coffee and gear reviews sorry rant over stay safe

    Wade Brother, this is bang on! I made two bushcraft axes (on for me, one for my son) about 10 years ago using two HB 0.7kgs hatchet heads, $7,00 each using two 21" hickory shafts in clearance from a hardware store, for $8.95 each. I renovate a lot of axes so it was easy to customize the shafts and soak them in oil. Finally I put a good edge on them and they are in good shape until this day. Your anorak is milsurp, what model is it? and the mitts look familiar, are they milsurp too? Best Regards, WS

    Really cool gear friend 🙂👍🏻 you should try a Fiskars axe or hatchet if you haven’t. They are the mora of axes. Very cheap and they chop extremely well. Everyone in the outdoors communities just got hit with information and hype overload when in the past there was very little. I've made one or two expensive mistakes when I've listened to what is the current piece of must have gear on YT and it's me who has to deal with and learn from the consequences when out in nature. You know if the garage sale axe is good enough for your purposes and the money you save when not buying top dollar kit can maybe get you out in nature more, isn't that what we wanted to begin with?

    I got turned around when I first started watching BC videos on YT. I'd done outdoors things since early teens and suddenly there was all these options out there I'd never even heard of. I bought some overpriced junk. You get back in your stride though and realise no one can choose your gear for you. You have to use it not the person or clique on YT or FB. That realisation in itself will save you money. Not everyone is comfortable with a £300 knife, I'd probably never use it.

    Wade, I agree with you 100% that Bushcrafting has become an elitist pursuit at least as we see it portrayed on YT. I have watched many of your videos and have made purchases based thereon as well(LL Bean Continental Ruck for example). While I applaud your efforts with this video in particular; how about using a few of these "Budget" items in one of your usual videos? Most people simply can't afford an Isle Royal Jr. or a Savotta Jakkari as their go-to pack. Nor does the average person trying to get into this have the financial wherewithal to carry a GB Small Forest axe. While I truly enjoy your videos I literally cringe every time I see one wondering what new uber-tool you're gonna be showing off. I applaud your efforts but would take them more seriously if you actually practiced what you are preaching(at least with this video in particular!) Keep up the good work; just please bear in mind that people's perception determines their reality in that the average viewer tends to believe what they see.

      Thanks for your continued support of the channel. I actually do use a lot of Mil Surplus clothing and sleep systems or budget equipment. I use vintage, yard sale axes regularly as well.
      Sleeping under a tarp using a military surplus sleeping bag and a yard sale axe is anything but elitist or glamorous. Take care and hope you enjoy future vids👍
