Hi TigerBalm. BJT active mode is when you have the CB junction reversed biased and the BE junction forward biased. The way the circuit is built (base is held at 0V, emitter at below 0V and collector at well above 0V) meant that these two conditions are forced onto the transistor. Hope that helps. 😊
I think you also need to check Vce to make sure your initial assumption of this BJT is in active mode. Great lecture btw!
