    We have a lot of kestrels where I live in SW Wisconsin, USA. I never knew there were so many but when I started taking a closer look at the single birds perched on telephone/power wires out here in the country, most of them are kestrels! They don’t seem to mind cars driving by but when I have stopped even a fair distance away, they fly off. I plan to go earlier sometime and park and wait and should get some good shots of them hunting.

      Nice one, how lucky as they are such beautiful Falcons. The American Kestrel is certainly up there as one of my favourites. Yep, that's seems to be the problem, you stop they fly! But vehicle make great hides and it's surprising how close you can get. Best of luck and thanks for watching from the USA. Cheers Rich 👍

    Another great video Richard, well done. I get your appreciation of the Kestrel. I had my moment with one last year on the coast path at the Lizard. It was perching and hunting right by the path and was totally unphased by my presence. It was a magical experience.

    Lovely shots and film mate. I don't have a problem with the kestrels on the posts with the barbed wire, after all pretty natural habitat for them on the verges of roads. Not something I've done a lot of but will be looking for a suitable place to park up soon I think! If I could only tempt a wily old buzzard!👍

    Hi Richard, Great pics - assume up on the downs near Goonhilly? I found a good site for Kestrel at the top car park at Portleven. If you are in the area, worth a sit there for a couple of hours. Also saw a kestrel in the field behind the peregrine site when I was down there in August. Hope that's helpful. Yet to see a decent peregrine at Mullion, but gonna persevere and try again when next down... I have seen their plucking sites but just not had them land whilst I have been there. That's wildlife.

    I used to use my vehicle as hide on a regular basis, unfortunately once word gets around for the location of a specific animal the area usually becomes a carpark. Kestrels are one of my favourite small raptors, I used to spend hours with our local kestrels but they disappeared last year and have not been seen since. Beautiful shots and footage mate, I'm taking my son to glencoe this weekend to hopefully photography the stags fighting, fingers crossed. I snapped a cracking shot of a merlin which I'm planning to Print and display.

      Thanks for watching, and Yes that is the only problem, and my videos don't always help especially for local birders and photographers catching on but I like to think it helps others and allows them to get some nice views and pictures. As long as they are respectful to the subject it's not too bad. Such a shame you've lost the Kestrels, hopefully one day they will return! Thanks for your comments, I hope you and your boy managed to get some great views and pictures of the Stags at Glencoe, now that's a top place to see Deer in the Rutt! Nice one on the Merlin, have you posted on Social Media? Would love to see it. Cheers R 👍

      @@RichardBirchett I find that the vast majority of photographers I meet are respectful and generally just decent people that love nature and wildlife as we do, of course there is always the exception to the rule and I've been unfortunate enough to meet and deal with two of them. Still it doesn't dampen my enthusiasm whatsoever. I'm very much looking forward to this weekend and we're meeting up with Geoff Cooper again, I'm sure he will be recording footage for his TH-cam channel. I must admit I'm not looking forward the long drive, still if we don't go we won't get the shots or experience the fantastic landscape. I've not posted the merlin shot Richard, actually I'm not posting quite a few shot on Instagram lately due to plagiarism, for the life of me I can't understand why people steel other people's photograph's. Anyway, on a lighter note I'm going to have a great weekend in the Highlands with my son and Geoff who's a top man and very knowledgeable. 🙂👍hope all is well.

    Great stuff, Richard. Coincidentally, I too have been out and about today and managed to get some nice shots of a beautiful female kestrel...from a Land Rover! Particularly liked your shots of her on your branch and mantling its prey in the heather.

      Hi Steve, thanks very much for checking in on my latest. Great to hear you've also had some success with them, I've not seen many males about on my patch! Thanks, my favourite was in the heather, such a great day. Thanks again Rich 👍

    Great episode man! Kestrels are definitely the most skittish raptors out there. Loved the images. Also, your Instagram link is broken.

      Hi Brent, thanks very much for watching! They usually are so skittish but I may have found the only one that's accepted me, lol... Probably won't happen again:-( I tried the link and it seems to work! Strange.. Cheers Rich 👍

    Stunning images Richard! The detail when you can fill a sensor frame, as opposed to having to crop in, is amazing! Most of my shots end up soft because I can't get close enough and have to crop (Eos R, EF 500mm MKI)

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike, yep the full frame cameras and fast action really do give the subjects justice! I know what you mean, getting close to any bird of prey is a challenge but on this occasion they let me into their world for a little look which was amazing. Thanks again Rich 👍

    I usually refer to my Tundra as my mobile blind. I've shot thousands of birds from the window.

    Lovely stuff mate, love Kestrels & being close to them really brings out the details in their plumage. Both male & female are stunning birds & one of my favourites of the UK birds of prey.
    Fantastic experience for you to spend 5-6 hours with them, superb stuff.
    Good luck with the Merlin project, hopefully the male will put in a decent appearance for you 🤞
    Some stunning footage & images there Richard, especially the grounded ones amongst the heather. 👌👏👏👏
    Keep on keeping on mate.
    Best,
    Nick

      Thanks Nick, truly amazing birds and I just couldn't get enough of them, lack of males about though! It was I felt so privileged to have spent time with them and it such close proximity! Might not happen again that close, still after that Merlin, will try again later in the week! Cheers for watching mate. Rich 👍

    Great shots!! Amazing experience. I actually really liked the shots with the post and wire. I think if they are “aged”they look great. Anyways really great shots.

    Cut some small stumps and get permission to mount them to tops of posts to make them look like real stumps. Couple feet tall so wires dont get in shots.

    Fantastic footage and stills Richard 👏👏👏👏 shooting at such an iso do you get a lot of noise pre post editing I must say your shots are tack sharp and the Kestrel is such an amazing bird

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Nigel, there was a little noise but nothing really to worry about and todays software does a really good job of sorting that out. I shot as high as 8k ISO and was so impressed by the quality, these new mirrorless cameras really are the business and shooting at high shutter speeds in low light really is a game changer. Thanks again for watching. Cheers Rich 👍
