I started doing neck resets in the 80's and needed a way to mark the dovetail joint for adjustments... as a Dentist I thought of articulating paper and brought some home from work. It proved to be a reliable way to get transfer marks and adjust the joint where you needed to remove small amounts of wood. I'm sure somebody else thought of it first but it's worked for
me all these years. I noticed that articulating paper (we use it to mark high spots in a person's bite and adjust for ideal fit of restorations -crowns, fillings etc.) is now sold on Amazon. We use paper than can also mark in red, might be useful but I've always just stayed with blue. Thought I'd throw that in. Thanks for the excellent video.

That is exactly the method I use to shim a neck when re-setting but It is always good to learn some extra tricks from you. Many thanks for sharing you knowledge.

One of the best video descriptions I’ve seen for this process. Thank you. Picked up more than a couple of those indispensable tricks like the block with the stop for use on the belt sander that will help me to avoid loosing the skin on my fingertips. It’s terrible when that happens right before a gig.

Thanks for the video - but this amateur is confused: Shims are tapered? Why? Are all dovetail neck shims tapered to start? "Top to bottom" - What orientation is top and bottom? I assume to know, but this was not established...

No wonder builders are choosing bolt on options. The dovetail makes a great interlocking joint but very time consuming.
