Thank you for this vlog. I'm looking at the Star Adventurer GTI there is one thing I've been wondering about. Can you polar a line by only using the app only?
Yes, you can use the app to help with polar alignment. I personally haven’t done it, as I now have the ZWO ASIair to control my GTi when using it. It has its own PA routine.
Something we have never seen before? Yes, the App. But a portable 2-axis GoTo-Mount with polaralignement-routine, usable standallone, with MGen or PC, guideable, powered by 8 AA batteries, with a weight of ~2 to 3 kg and a capacity of 5kg? Thats nothing new and available since 2014, called the iOptron smartEQ. It was and is for ~500.- I just dont get it, why people freak out on this SA mount.
I’ve personally never used the iOptron Smart EQ, so I can’t really comment which is better. Nebula Photos here on TH-cam has also done a video on the new SWSA GTi and also mentions it against the Smart EQ and points out some differences between the two.
Thanks, Joel for a great update. Unfortunately, the weather beat you - It has not been a great start to the year for Astro. I think the GTI is something down the track for me, currently saving for a 2i.
Why the 2i vs the GTi? They seem similarly priced with more options on the GTi. I was put off in the review about time-lapse availability, I don't see why and would think that is just a software addition. I have a 2i, but was intrigued by the GOTO function thinking it would be a better tracker for nightscape, especially with longer lenses of 100-200mm. Not sure now after this review, and the time is short on preorder as I have been told by a reseller that after this batch coming in May, the next will be April 2023. I was thinking of selling the 2i, but now I'm not certain which way to go.
@@michaelwmcdonald I’ll be keeping my 2i for my Nightscapes, and I have my own copy of the GTi that I’ve ordered and I’ll be using that mainly for my deep stuff, as the GoTo function will help with finding those smaller faint objects.
I personally haven’t, but there is a setting in my ASIair that tells the mount to Dither. It’s not really the mount that has a dither mode, rather the program telling the mount to do it. That’s as far as I know.
Hey dude Great to see a Qlder on here, im just outside Ipswich. just getting into Astrophotography and im looking at getting the GTi because i want that goto functionality. and was also looking at the Evolux 62ED. at the moment im using a jenky setup with the mount of my Nexstar 4se and just putting my camera straight on the mount and it does track to a point best exposure length i can do is 1 min and pick up plenty of light but yeah i do want to upgrade
If you’re after doing more of the “deeper” space Astro photography then the GTi is the way to go because of the GoTo functionality. The 62ED Evolux is great, but the dovetail bar it comes with is a little small, so I’ve had to find a larger one to cope with me and balancing out my heavier DSLR set up I use.
I personally have never used the AZ GTI, but I’ve been told by others that the tracking accuracy is better with less backlash. Also because the latitude base is apart of the unit it’s a little sturdier.
I have both the SA Gti and the AZ Gti now. The main advantage of the former is it is more sturdy and the weight of the mount and scope are better centered over the tripod. Personally I don't see much difference in tracking accuracy and my SA Gti had far more backlash out of the box. The Az Gti has spring loaded worm gears that work well and unfortunately the SA Gti does not. Another problem is the RA screw on the SA Gti comes loose on mine and I had to disassemble it to install some plumbers tape on the screw to prevent it from happening. There were also some initial firmware bugs which are mostly sorted now. Overall if you have the Az Gti already you don't need the SA Gti in my opinion. I bought mine for the extra stability but the downside is it is larger so I will probably keep the Az Gti as my main travel mount anyway. With a bit of work my SA Gti is now as good as my Az Gti (in EQ mode) has been with a little more stability.
Hi from WA,PLEASE can you do a sigma octantis polar alignment with the GTI; bought the Adventurer 2i and have been very disappointed due to the difficulties of polar alignment, is the GTI more user friendly.I am a newbie…
I would say the GTI is better, as you can fine tune a polar alignment with the SynScan App after doing a 3 star alignment. I plan on doing some tutorials on polar alignment in general as I’ve been getting a lot of requests for it here in the Sth Hemisphere.
Robert, as a GoTo mount you can use software based Polar Alignment such as available in SharpCap Pro. I find this is far better, easier and faster than trying to use a polar scope. It works fine on the Az Gti.
No didn’t get the best opportunity to use the mount before giving it back. Though when I get my own copy I’ll be testing it out with my ASIair set up. 👍🏼
GTI weighs 5.7lbs or 2.58kg, counter weight 5lbs or 2.27kg so 10.7lbs or 4.8kg total. The 2i is 3.6lbs or 1.6kg plus counter weight of 2.25lbs or 1kg. Total of 5.85lbs or 2.6kg. The package weight of the 2i Pro is 7lbs or 3.8kg. So all in 7lbs(3.2kg) vs 11lbs(5kg), plus all the other stuff like tripod or guide scope, etc.
Nice video just found your channel from this video, count me as another sub. I'm out near Gatton. I'm looking at getting into Astrophotography and eventually Deep sky? I'm really impressed with the GTI. What would you think would be a mInimum spec for DSLR? I've been looking at EOD 200D as my entry camera? I guess any camera will do just get out and start shooting right? Look forward to your future videos. 👏👏👍
Always get out there and start shooting. A 200D will get you started, but a 2nd hand 6D is the best option, it’s great in low light and cheaper than a new 200D
Cool video mate :)
Thanks mate 🙏🏻

The 2i will be a wise investment

Do you know if its possible to dither on this mount? I recently got one and I can't find a way, even using NINA

i want to buy the gti in usa in august 2022 but cannot find one in stock anywhere
Yeah….they’ve been super popular, and for good reason. Here in Australia they should be available again late Feb 2023.

@@TheTiredPhotographer sweet thanks dude
My AZ GTI has the "go to" function and also in Sky Safari has got to. What am I missing? What is the upgrade? Thx Mike

Were you able to use an autoguider with it? What about Stellarium?

Gidday, great content, maybe more light on your face as a bit dark. Any idea when it’s available for purchase ?
Cheers
Yeah I did under cook the lighting in this one. 🤪👌🏼 Late May 2022 I’ve been told.
Cheers
Thanks for doing this review. How much does it weigh?
2.5kg
More than you’d wanna backpack with. 🤪👍🏼

If someone has a Star Adventurer 2i and AVX , should one still get it , if focal lengths of scope is max 200mm to be used?
Totally up to you, but it sounds like you already have your hands full. I’ll be getting one still. 😉👍🏼
@@TheTiredPhotographer thank u so much
Great, I just bought the pro…great.
It’s a great tracker
I need one !!! 🤣
I’ve never used the AZ-GTI, but apparently this mount does have better tracking. Might as well upgrade ASAP!!

So be no good for tracked panorama's
Well currently not really, but I have heard a whisper of a very cool update to the Synscan App that may help that out. 🤫😉
Stop slapping your hand…
I’ll keep that in mind. 👏🏼
