As I said in the previous video, this week's cover is a revisit of a cover I did fairly recently. I was excited to see Bury the Light so high on the list, but I had absolutely no idea how to tackle it differently from my first time. The natural approach for me is to just go lower with tuning, but that meant Double Drop D, or 8-string dropped an octave below a normal 6-string drop D. It's not the first time I've played this low, but I was really determined to make it as clean and clear as possible when it came to pitch stability.
To achieve this, I finally picked up Mike Stringer's Mixwave plugin (not sponsored) knowing that Spiritbox plays in Drop F#, it had to be good for this and oh boy was it. I landed on a tone I liked almost instantly and it gave me the inspiration to really lean on Spiritbox influence for this cover as they've been the most influential band on me in the past few years. I took a lot of arrangement ideas from Jaded, with a ton of mix tricks from Circle With Me. I even ended up mixing in the double drop D guitar ANOTHER octave down as well as the bass to make the guitars sound lower than perhaps anything I've ever heard before, let alone mixed myself. It was an incredible challenge in the production phase of this cover.
My last cover of this song was met with a lot of criticism because of my voice. It was tough on me because as a lot of you know, I have rather low self-esteem with my singing and I've been really trying to work to be okay with it, but I took a very growly approach with this then and I could tell by the comments, some people did not like it. Having Lollia take this one is exciting for me because we're flipping the gender of the singer and it really sounds unique and different from the original in a cool way. The comments sections of my videos are usually unnecissarily over-critical anytime I have a vocalist, and I'm sure it won't be different this time. However, I really think we landed on something really cool here, and worrying about pleasing everyone may have prevented me from doing this project like this.
This was reuploaded because the initial video got a large amount of criticism about the vocal mix. The vocals have been boosted in this and I hope it's easier to hear more intricities in Lollia's performance. We took a very different approach with the style of this song, and while it won't be for everyone, I those who enjoy it can appreciate the insane work that went into this.
Bury the Light in 2022 was the last cover I did before breaking my thumb which triggered a domino effect of many really tough trials in my life. I'm hoping that I can bookend that with this truly monsterous revisit to that cover. All that being said, the final cover of your favorite video game songs of all time is just a week away...
And dare is say it, it's going to be even bigger than this one.

The original BtL exudes raw power while this one has a hauntingly almost somber tone which is really cool. I also kinda like that having a female vocalist adds an extra little link to Nero's theme. Like a little familial bond in their themes. I love stuff like that. I didn't get to hear the previous upload of this, but I quite like this version. Jules never seems to miss. Hearing a female take on the vocals was extremely refreshing, and the instrumentals, especially the guitar, were very well done and breathed new life into a song I’ve listened to a thousand times.
I'm sorry to hear about the criticism of the last one. I know firsthand that it is very common to focus on the negative comments, but please don't ignore all the people saying that you sound amazing, cause you really do!

This is by far my favorite version of this song, i think you nailed the sound in every way and lollia sings this song perfectly. I listen to this song multiple times a day cause i love it so much. Also there is nothing wrong with your vocals, your my go to for most music.
Can't help but feel like your version of the instrumental part after the first verse ( 1:20 ) was intensely Symphony Of The Night-esque; fantastic job on your arrangement!
I love that jules was able to be extremely respectful of his fanbase while standing his ground. Regardless of what you thought of the OG mix, if you are gonna be a bitch about it (which a good amount weren’t) he doesn’t owe you shit. On top of that the bad few doesn’t deserve to bury the people just trying to be constructive. Covers were meant to be diff from the OG and if you don’t like it just listen to the OG

As someone who really dislikes when Singers go far out of their Range, I can only say I am absolutely amazed and very, very pleased by the choices you guys made in the Vocals here. Lollia was sticking to what felt comfy for her, and where she had the most oomph and it shows. Her Voice really focuses on "pinpointing" rather than flatout endless brutality, if that makes Sense. That is how I hear it, anyway. The Mix is IMO pretty damn good, and I had no Problems with it in any capacity. I think you guys really nailed a special tone with this one, that is vastly different from the other Covers of this. Way to go. Very much enjoying it. :)

I thought you nailed the speechy bits really well too, which is deceptively difficult to get right. I didn't hear the original release, but Lollio came through really well in this mix and the effort to make this sound awesome really shows.

6:24 I love Lollia's delivery of this part of the song. Having pop vocals, rather than metal vocals almost feels more ominous than the original

I was actually kinda bummed out when I found out that the original video was taken down. I was planning to give it a listen.
Either way, I like the tune. ^_^ Lollia's vocals are exquisite. Same goes for yours. I also like the percussion, and... the other instrument playing during the quiet parts. Sounds like a piano.

I feel like this is a hard song to cover because Victor Borba has insane singing abilities. Its like Linkin Park meets gospel. Which makes sense because he sings quite a few Christian metal songs along with Linkin Park covers.

This is very good.
While listening to the original mix I made a mental comment on how the vocals were a little low but nearly low enough to leave an actual comment+I sent this cover to my friend that i barbomb with bury the light and he said he liked version of the song better then any other.
I didn't get to hear yesterdays, what was the difference?
The vocals were softer, and some people felt they were drowned out by the instruments. So he redid the mixing a bit.

That's bullshit - I thought your voice was a very good fit for this song especially. Keep on singing. It's your music!
I really love this cover though. You're absolutely right - having Lollia instead gives a 2000s rock/metal vibe, it makes me think of Evernescance and Nightwish, two of my favourite metal bands with women as lead singers.
Edit: And there is the Jules solo! This makes it even more like those bands, I love it.
As someone else pointed out, this gives the song a connection with Devil Trigger which has vocals by Ali Edwards.
This is also one of the most challenging songs of all time, in my opinion - it has SO MUCH GOING ON. There is nobody in the world who is going to sound like Victor Borba, so everyone has to put their own spin on it, try their best to capture the spirit of the intensity. And maybe end up with something even better than the original - which could very well be what we have here.

I'm proud to see that you took the high road and actually tried to improve it based on the criticism though even if you were already satisfied with the final product, a lesser man would've been like _"You know what screw you Im taking my ball and going home!"_

I think Victor Borba's (the OG singer) vocals fits this song better, he has a much more powerful voice and he's really good with singing with distortion so I think his vocals really capture the vibe of the song.
(Don't get me wrong, I don't think your version was bad. But it's really hard to compete with Victor because he is talented AF)

Wonder if those who criticised your vocal before can play guitar anywhere near your level??
