The Festival of Gas is from the 1964 World's Fair! Sure it may seem strange but at something like the World's Fair where you showcase advances in society, it makes sense! The pavilion featured a puppet movie, a magic show, cooking demonstrations and product displays have been assembled by the gas industry in a pavilion of light, airy architecture in a garden. There was a gas turbine, generators and coolers which were actually being used to heat, light and cool the pavilion and were shown and explained. There were also diagrams that explained how humanity discovered gas. And a restaurant with different regional dishes prepared right on the table thanks once again, to gas.

Man, those seats look comfy! They were built between 1914 and 1924 and yup, the bars came later and replaced the straps on many of the cars in the late 1930s. The ceiling fans were added between 1919 and 1920. The globes were removed between 1925 and 1927. They were refurbished in the late 1950s and were retired from service in 1969 (nice). The BRT designed the cars this way because they wanted them to be an improvement compared to the cars the IRT were running at the time, on top of ones suitable for tunnels. They hired engineer Lewis B. Stillwell to design them. But of course, by the time all the cars were built, they were bankrupt and the BMT took over their operations.

The BMT Standards lacked a name or model number when they were initially ordered. It was only after accepting delivery of 950 of them between 1914 and 1920 that, since the BMT had more of them in service than any other model of rolling stock, they became recognized as the "standard" car for the company. They were all 67 feet long, and they served ALL of the BMT's lines. While most of them were retired following the summer of 1969, there remained one six-car train of Standards in service on the BMT's Canarsie Line until January of 1971. This is from what I remember when I worked as a Tour Guide at the New York Transit Museum from 1990 to 1993. Keep up the FANTASTIC posts!

LoV runs on the narrower IRT lines (numbered) if I am not mistaken. They could run on the BMT rail but there would be an unacceptable platform gap.

For those who don't know on the above train, when this train ran from Murderal ave in brooklyn to downtown jay st. we use to open the door this way; The one seat in the corner next to the door, we'd reach under it, press the lach on it, raise the seat, an pull a lever that's there up, and the doors open! Hello?

Those trains and anything running on the B Division (all the letter lines will always be wider than IRT trains. The IRT tunnels were built narrower. So that’s why you’ll never see an R211 on the 4…wouldn’t fit. You’ll never see an R62 or R142 on the F train; too wide a gap between the platform edge and the train.
