    I was one of the police officers (age 20) who helped deal with the aftermath putting bodies in lead lines coffins. The first officer there was a motor cycle office nic named Sooty who walked into the plane through a hole in the side and pulled a couple of people out before the fire started. Very brave man. Very good men in Stockport police then and I am sure now.. PC 19.

    One of my very earliest memories, and it’s the faintest glimmer, is of the column of smoke rising from Stockport after the crash. I was just turning 3 years old, my bedroom at our house in Cheadle Hulme looked over a school playing field and onwards to Stockport a couple miles away. We lived just slightly south of the flight path into Ringway 23, the intended runway the plane never reached. I saw hundreds of planes coming in; once I watched a 707 with a number two engine fire, and the very first 747 flying in. The crash site was a mess I saw many times my first ten years of life before moving to Canada; I used to switch buses going to visit my Nan on Marple Road and look at the crash. Good old Stockport, how I treasure if from all the way over here in BC, and especially how it’s being revitalized without losing its character.

      I was too young to remember it but as I grew up hearing about it and it being so local to us,I'm from New Mills originally it was a site I saw often too. It is good that there is a memorial there to the deceased. Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your memories.

      @@CampervanTales I bought a new laptop when i started content creating, one that had a gpu to handle the demands but there seem to be a lot of settings needing changing for my needs. I’m slowly getting the hang of it and it should be able to handle Premiere Pro which I’ve been using. May need to use something different though when on the road, so thanks for the recommendation 👍

    I was 11 when that happened and I can remember it being announced on the radio news. My Mum grabbed the telephone to see if my Grandparents were still alive or homeless due to the crash. At the time nobody know exactly where it had crashed. I visited the crash site about a week after everything had been cleared.

    I was in Woodley going home after finishing my paper round when I watched this aircraft fly overhead. Two engines were out on the same wing, I stood and watched it head towards Stockport until it went out of sight wondering if it made it. When I got home I heard the news on the radio. I still see that aircraft in my dreams today

    I was on a bus traveling into Stockport on that day. My father was at home , near Debdale Park. I remember him describing what he saw and heard as the aircraft flew over the area. Great praise is due to the pilot for dropping that plane into possibly the only gap in a densely populated area, however, unless the crew were confident that they could get to the airport, why didn’t they ditch in one of three large reservoirs, the golf course, the park or Reddish Vale. The tragic gate of passengers might have been little altered, but the risk to a wider public would have been a lot less. Plane spotting was , from that day forward , something of a preoccupation and once in a while it is the sound that makes us take notice.

    I cannot walk past the site without pausing for a minute or so, to reflect on this day..and think of those who didn`t make it, and I have to read some of the names..A chap called Steve Morrin, wrote two books on this accident, and a film was produced for the 50th anniversary in 2017, with all current evidence, he had access to, in his tireless efforts to get the truth on exactly what happened. and interviews with some of the survivors, and the brave people who helped on that day..Sadly Steve passed away recently, but his efforts over many, many years,has been rewarded by this memorial site, and in his memory too..

      Thanks for the information. We didn't realise that there had been books written about the tragedy. We don't walk past often as we don't live in Stockport, but when we do we always spend a couple of minutes reflecting. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

      @@CampervanTales The books were "The day the sky fell down", and then an updated version, is called "Six Miles from Home"..the latter being published for the 50th anniversary in 2017, when the memorials were unveiled, and was in conjunction with the documentary of the same name(may still be available on dvd). I would think these are now quite difficult to find..so pleased I got my copies a while ago..

    I remember it flying low over our house and in what seemed like minutes (I was 6 at the time so I was almost certainly confused by the length of time) Radio 1 disc jockey’Diddy’ David Hamilton was at the scene reporting on the tragic accident (I couldn’t understand why such a jovial character was there…or why he kept repeating himself but of course it was a repeated tv recording)
    Apparently he was the nearest thing The BBC had to a reporter in the area (he lived in Marple)
    I was told, some 30 years later by a Stockport Council official that the reason there wasn’t much publicity after the event was Stockport Council didn’t want the Town to be permanently linked with such a horrible event so senior managers swept the anniversary under the carpet for years…there wasn’t any memorial or any mention of the crash until 1998 & 2002 respectively.

    • @CampervanTales
      @CampervanTales  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing your memories. We didn't know that Diddy David had lived in Marple. It's a shame that the council wanted the tragedy to be swept under the carpet for so long.

      Your Dad was a brave man to have gone to help. We have the same regrets, we should have asked our parents more about their history. I guess it is the regret of most people as they get older, not to have asked their parents more.
