It's ironic that the holiday meant to mock Guy Fawkes and celebrate his failure and death has kept his memory alive and led to him becoming something of a folk hero worldwide. He's become more recognizable than the king he attempted to assassinate.

It's controlled opposition. Fawkes was clearly a pawn to the elites, who didn't need a king or a parliament.

I think these days Bonfire Night is ironic and meant to celebrate our democracy and freedom. I think that's ridiculous - the 'guy' was a fanatical Catholic terrorist, but I think that's how people see it now.

Small thing I want to correct-its not just England who celebrates Nov 5th, Scotland does too, the small village I grew up in used to have a bonfire, guy and fireworks every year and the city I moved to still has fireworks but no bonfire and guy for some reason. I'm not sure how widespread it is over Scotland but it was a very small village I grew up in so I can only assume it must be relatively widespread

Predictably Brexit had little impact, the world is far too interconnected nowadays. With numerous wars going on across the world, one at the other end of Europe, the UK is showing its ability to offer assistance. You should be embarrassed by this comment talking about celebrating mass slaughter, you should consider what morals you think you have.

“...And because all and every person may be put in mind of his duty, and be there better prepared to the said holy service, be it enacted by the authority aforesaid, that every minister shall give warning to his parishioners, publicly in the church at morning prayer, the Sunday before every such Fifth day of November, for the due observation of the said day.
