    This week I saw this mysterious bird for the first time in my life. I live in CT and had never even heard of it before! Couldn't mistake it for anything I am familiar with once I saw it so I knew it was special. Four days later, and he's returned to my feeder everyday! I'm happy to see them doing well in my area as they are labeled "endangered" in CT. BEAUTIFUL BIRD!!!

      I live in northwest central PA and I just saw my first one yesterday, 02May21. It was feeding from my mixed-seed feeder. I have always wanted to see one and I knew just what it was. I hope he or she comes back again. There is something else out there this evening that may be a juvenile but it's hard to see at dusk. My male rosebreasted grosbeaks are back today, as are the ruby-throated hummingbirds. These past two days have been so exciting!!!

      @@AdrienneAce2 Awesome! Ours has stuck around now for the week, and I managed to get some beautiful pictures of the illusive critter yesterday morning. Be patient. It's so worth it!

    Was bowled over seeing one swoop down to gobble up the cat food I had set out. I also had squirrels, cardinals and red bellied woodpeckers feasting on the cat food at the time. I could then spot the male and female together in a pine snag. I have never been so jaw-droppingly enamoured with a bird before. They are gorgeous!

    I'm lucky enough to have a red-headed woodpecker at my feeder every year. Haven't seen him this year yet. Hoping he'll come back! Thanks for the very informative video!

    I found this video while researching the woodpeckers in our yard. I saw one yesterday and it was exactly like this, with the bold red head and stark black/white body. Incredible. I'll be keeping my camera with me in the yard now!

    Many years ago I saw many woodpeckers with red heads in my area on Lake Austin. So many that I began make red headed woodpecker door knockers for fun. Then, for over a decade I didn't see one. I came here while researching whether or not they are extinct. That's what I had thought I had read. Yesterday and today I have seen one back. I want to get a photo of it to see what kind it is but ot moves around so quickly. I see smaller ones without the bright red here regularly. For the last few years I have see a ring tailed cat at night in the oak trees. It's curious and stalks me tree to tree as I walk. I can't wait to get a photo of the red headed woodpecker. I want to know what species it is. Good video. Thank you for posting it.

    Very helpful video, especially in distinguishing the calls of the red-headed and red-bellied woodpeckers. Both of these woodpeckers used to be much more common here in Michigan. Thanks for posting the video.

    Hadn't seen this bird until a few years ago. I spend a good part of every summer in southwester WI (mostly between Darlington and Monroe, but centered in Gratiot. Just east of South Wayne on Rt. 11 was my most recent sighting. I believe there is another pair (?) just north of Gratiot less than a 1/4 mile off of Riverside Rd on the north side of Pecatonica Rd. If you live anywhere near these areas, you owe it to yourself to check out these amazingly beautiful (and increasingly rare) birds.

    Consider yourself lucky. Right place at the right time is key to finding this guy. This is one of the hardest North American birds to catch a fleeting-glimpse of.

    I saw a pair picking raspberries. They would hover like a hummingbird for a second or two,just long enough to pluck a berry then fly off. It was entertaining for a good half hour!

    About 3 live near my home in Michigan. They are often spotted at a suet feeder sometimes arguing amiably with a red-bellied woodpecker. They sometimes land on the ground and eat with doves, brown-headed cowbirds, and bluejays.

    I was a window cleaner earlier in my life and I had noticed that woodpeckers seemed to fly into tall buildings more than there numbers would suggest. I would find them dead on some of the lower floor's roofs. I always thought it had something to do with their undulating flight patterns, maybe with wings closed, not enough time to react.

    Thanks for this informative and interesting information that you've shared here. I really appreciate the distinctions you've given between the different species of woodpeckers particularly their calls. Please let me know if you have anymore videos like this pertaining to other bird species?

    It is said their decline is partially due to car incidents since they tend to fly low & of course loss of open area dead wood, preferably soft dead wood according to the DNR Wisconsin. So leave that dead tree standing if you can, there is still much life left in dead trees! Use a dead very hard wood tree for firewood, it burns longer anyway!

    I had one in my backyard in a dead tree a few years ago. I accidentally killed it with a BB gun. It was an accident and I felt sort of bad afterwards and face him a proper burial. I didn't think I was actually going to hit him I was just messing around

    • @austinartist0608
      @austinartist0608 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah not the place to comment about that one. Just saying. If you pointed the bb gun at the bird and pulled the trigger then it was no accident. Many a man spent their life behind bars for shooting somebody then saying the same thing you wrote here. You did it. Own it. And don't say it was an accident.
