Arin some buildings for you to consider could be perhaps a Smithy, a tavern and a Stable? they would really add to the RP aspect of the castle. great build reminds me alot of Lordaran from Darksouls with it being situated so high on a cliff like that and with its high walls.
You should have different districts in your castle. It would be really cool to have different sections in your keep that will be used for different purposes. It would make your castle a lot more organized and easier to map out and navigate. Also, if you are ever under siege, you will be able to easily coordinate your forces and be able to pull out or add troops to a certain district. You could also implement a caste system. It would be really cool to come in as a new person and be able to work your way up into an amazing job.
I definetly like the idea of houses on the face of the mountain or even (if the physics do prevent you) houses inside the walls poking through on both sides.
I always thought of a Roleplay server in this game, with like 5 kingdoms, each one with really big castles, some could be allies or enemies, even neutral, they would be fighting for resources, or even doing jobs for one kingdom for getting resources. And each kingdom has its king, people that serve for the king, people that pick up resources (that could be the peasants) etc. This game could be so huge.
Things you could build.. Battlements with training yards so like an archery yard and barracks for the archers swordsmen training grounds with barracks, need possibly stables and space for jousting. Need a tavern or 2 with an inn. Market would probably make more since in the middle of town or by the entrance. Need a place for entertainment like a stadium just outside of the main walls and you need a place for executions like a hangman's pole or guillotine. A forge works or 2(one for the kings men and one for the city folk) and some kind of water supply. Oh and to add a touch of realism add some left over scaffolding and beams to the walls and towers. Its a very cool start can't wait to see it all finished
Nice to see someone building a settlement for more than just a few people :) My only suggestion is that you take your time, there may be features in future updates that will fit in well with your current design. Please do not rush anything.
Noobius Maximus well actually minas tirith is based on several rings. And those are standing on solid rock if you can find the perfect spot you should be good.
That was my first idea when i bought ME steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=392289359 It's only the outer wall though and main rockstructure
Look, you say keep, and in some way you're correct. A keep is a large defensive structure, but is usually found at the CENTER of a fortress, or at least it's the biggest and best part. The word you are looking for, my friend, is most likely a "Sally-Forth", which is a dispensable defensive structure that would be kept until no longer possible, at which point it would be deserted, or in later cases, scuttled so as to prevent its capture. I leave you with this information and a compliment: cool...just...cool.
This is great, you could slope turret defences down the hill and have some sort of entrance up the hill face perhaps. Also, platforms could be added off the walls to place cannons on.
For a castle this side, the market needs to be WAY bigger. Also, your village/town needs barracks, stables, blacksmith and a archery range for archers.
Clear the centre road so you can see the whole king castle when you enter and make some houses face the road and make some of them into stores or blacksmith and blablabla. Lower walls can be used to store siege weapons like catapult and balistas and the wall just below the castle can have some huge stationary weapons there for things like long range strikes. Make an army camp around the castle and barracks on the field so if bandits or barbarian attack they will be slow down by it. And maybe a mine inside the mountain full of secret tunnels for smugglers and make sure one leads to the king's treasure room.
Actually, a straight avenue through the village to the keep wouldnt be the best idea. Sure it would look really nice, but if a besieging army broke through the outer gate, they have a straight run to the keep. It would be better to have a winding road going through the village that eventually arrives at the keep. That way, the defenders could theoretically pull down the houses to create blockades, and even light the blockades on fire making it hell for the invaders to reach the keep. Of course, that would only be if he seals up all those arched entrances to the Keep courtyard :p
Aaron the Keep is the castle where you placed the Kings chambers the fort at the front is a gate house, easy way to remember that, the Keep is always the last point of defence in a castle.
Arron you should have the village extend down the mountain keeping the rich at the top and the poorer working people further down, eventually building into that valley at the bottom. The view from the top looking down would be so cool, over rows and rows of admiring citizens!! 😃
The main thing i felt was off was that all the houses in the village pointed the same way, as in the roofs. Seldom did a real planner really think over the placement of buildings in the olden days, and houses would pop up and disappear sporadically. Making the alleys and streets a literal maze. So mix up the houses a bit, i really liked the courtyard. And the diagonal turret tip.
you should make the entrance to the village more grand. you look in movies and ruins of actual castles, and the entrances were very grand. this looks like secret passage into the village (also another cool idea)
Looking at this, there are some features that I would love to see either added to the vanilla release or modded into the game: 1. Wizard's tower...because wizards. 2. Some kind of barbarian-styled encampments or decorations 3. Standards, because a castle isn't yours until you have your coat of arms waving in the wind upon a flag on your towers.
LastStandGamers You can try and arc a wall between the Kings outer towers facing the village, to the outer defensive walls. That would make it possible to fit a stables and maybe a Smith. Besides, you want the kings place to be very hard to get to by attackers and be outside of balista range for that extra security. Awesome job atm and i hope to see some future updates to that!
LastStandGamers I love this whole thing you've been doing so far but 2 things stuck out to me. The castle area and the courtyard etc. is quite small for the size of the hill and everything that you're building. The castle itself and especially the courtyard need to be expanded if you plan on making a gigantic castle structure on this hill with it's multiple levels and perhaps even to the point where you might want to clear out all the houses and dedicate that inner wall solely to the palace, blacksmith, courtyard, and general castle specific things. Then move all the houses to the outer levels and lower down on the hill with walls around each level of hill that you've already created. You might want to make the castle partially wrap around the courtyard with the walls and have buildings that are attached or part of the walls themselves as that happened quite often in some older structures. I love your designs and it seems to be coming out quite nicely but you will have to drastically expand the castle area if you want the town to cover most of the hill you so carefully designed.
For the gate, make some sort of large tunnel coming out of the hill somewhere. If you include a breakdown system, it will be a very strong point of your castle! Oh, and some turrets could really use some place for siege engines like ballistas.
You should make a well towards the center of the village, and you should make a vertical mine shaft using the pulley system to transport people and supplies around the mine.
I mean, it wouldn't have worked as well with space engineers but now they have created the medieval setting there really needs to be a roleplay/life mod or official update with different jobs like farming, mining, building (manual labour jobs) lawyers, knights, guardsmen, milita (two kingdoms so wars can work) architects, kings, barons, etc. It would be amazing, and it all revolves around the structures and settlements players make.
As well as fortifications, have farms on the lower levels. I think guard each level more heavily the lower you get down, because in a battle, the first line of defense is really your most important, with the rest just being emergency. But yeah, have farms either just outside the walls or inside the lower levels. And maybe one or two houses. In fact, as well as the village inside the top level, have a much larger village surrounding the fortress as a whole, and then further on, farms for the villagers to toil on. That's pretty much what they did in the middle ages.
Perhaps you can make a winding path from the entrance into the village that leads people through most of the housing before arriving at the Keep itself. That way, defenders can use the village itself as an extra line of defense in case the outer gate is breached; They could pull down the houses, creating blockades, which could be lit on fire to stop invaders. Just be sure to have storehouses somewhere under the Keep itself where siege supplies can be stowed, so the loss of the village wont cause the castle to fall :p I have a mild obsession with castles :p Im always thinking about maximizing the defensive capabilities of any that I build in sandbox games :)
you should build some kind of church or tempel on the left side of the main castle and some kind of stables on the right, the town could also use a smeltery and some farms outside the city walls like it used be in the medieval times.
I challenge you to build any kind of "Black smith house". Some thing, that could be turned with layter patches, working black smith working shop. Where you could "in theory" hammer sword, sharpen them and even build armor if needed. Anvil you can build from wood. Just the layout of the place is fine. =)
The only thing i'd say is that you should have some of the houses going horizontal instead of having all the houses just in lines. But otherwise, great job as usual Aaron.
You should add a few buttresses on those walls. It would reinforce them and break up the shape a bit, making it easier on the eyes. Also, give the village houses some stone foundations, those wooden walls sprouting out of the ground look really weird.
Perhaps take some inspiration from Constantinople's three layered Theodosian Walls? That is, have an outer moat (or in this case a trench), with some short ground level walls and fighting positions on your side of the trench, a second, taller wall behind that, and then the main city walls behind that second wall. The perimeter wall could probably do with having a couple elevators so you don't have to run around looking for a turret entrance to get to the top. Similarly, perhaps put some firing slits into the walls so that people inside the walls can fire out at besiegers. Oh, and definitely a rock trap of some sort to drop rocks on attackers heads. Historically, there would be holes above the gates of castles and cities called murder holes just for this purpose, along with letting archers shoot down into the attackers. A similar idea was done with parapets and turrets with the machicolation. Regarding the village, I suggest demolishing those houses and instead going for a 3-5 story apartment block style setup, like the old Roman insula. It'd save space and look better aesthetically, I think. A modified form of that little square by the keep would work really well as one I think.
Hey man I like what your doing for the most part but as a idea you should try to change some of the angles on the houses right now they are all in lines but you should just kinda do some Organized randomization if that makes sense lol and I also noticed some of the buildings had thin bases and thick tops id recommend throw down some pillars to make it look a tad bit more realistic
Scatter some houses at the bottom of the mountain/castle and around it to give it more of a lived in feel and stuff. Also these houses should only have 1 floor.
It looks absolutely awesome but you shouldn't put the pointy roofs on the towers because this means that the castle is no longer a "château fort" which means it's no longer a stronghold so it doesn't have any military presence or military purpose
Take out all the houses you made. Make the new open area an army barracks, training ground, and a courtyard for the nobles. Then crest a tunnel or massive stairs to the forest area. Clear the forest and make it into the pedant housing. Larger houses closer the the royal families castle. One the castle and surrounding village is finished make a wall with heavy defenses. Also add details like small parks, taverns, gallos, jails, recruiting offices for the military, and finally fill the surrounding area outside of the walls with lumber huts and farmers.
Maybe add some L and T shaped houses? It would look a lot more random! Also different kind of tower and heigts would be nice, can't wait to start myself tomorrow!!
You so need to make an underground network, with the entrance accessible only from the king's castle. You need to be paranoid in your backup plan in case your kingdom is under siege. You should consider making traps as extra defense to your castle.
I'd recommend that you be careful when you put in interior facing crenelations. Traditionally, castles didn't have inward facing crenelations so that if attackers took the outer walls, they wouldn't have any cover against defenders further in at the keep or inner walls.
Know what I'd love to see on some of these castle builds? And what I wanna do myself? Wooden bracing on the stone walls. I think that might help keep them up. Some sorta cross patterns or something to help the structural integrity. If it's possible---I need to get myself the game before I say anything about it though, heh.
Im pretty sure im not the only one who's pointed this out An Attack On Titan themed mod would work really well with this game. Once modding support is added, I could definitely see it becoming a thing.
definitly think you should build some sort of escape passageway through the mountain to the lower land. I noticed what look like tunnels in the original clip of just the brown landscaping which could end up being something quite interesting!? Just a thought XD Fantastic so far!
That really does look fantastic!, I cant wait to see it finished. Would it be possible to put it up on the workshop? A few dimensions in the description would help make a surface large enough for it to fit :)
You should add the village that you already made is like the Royal village and then make a smaller village where it's like presents and stuff like that and more defences
About my idea on cable cart video, from where your Casel is you can make an escape entrance using it, think about it,your under siege and need to escape, you can pull a lever that will make the whole kingdom smash down, leaving the attacker with only rubble
Love the design looks cool I would suggest making the peasant homes less uniform don't be afraid to rotate some it will help with realism I think. Otherwise a Smith, church, stables, barracks are a few buildings that would have unique shapes. Anyway keep up the good work.
Goddamnit. I get so pleased with my three walls, two buildings and maybe a tower and then there's this. How do you stay creative and continue building the whole time? Is it a case of stopping and coming back to it after a touch of inspiration or do you just keep going until everything takes shape around you.
some parks and plazas. also barracks but that can be added at the keep or castle. the lower areas could have mines and tunnels as well as residential areas. you could also add an aqueduct if that is a thing. main roads and roads of interest. i don't know if they have farms but that might be good although you would need an area around the city to farm or just open space. granaries and buildings like shops would be nice. escape tunnels and guild houses(merchants blah blah blah). this of course is just ideas and do not have to be used.
I think you shoud build a smaller fortress on the top of the hill that would somewhat protect the castle from an attack from that said hill.. it could be connected to the castle by some underground hallway
You should add a trade house/trade hall where you could have those tables set up as booths and even have a small bar inside with a stage for entertainment and announcements. A room for hookahs and even a office for the noble running it all.
Every castle needs a dungeon! A publicly known dungeon where all your basic law breakers go, and a hidden one with a hidden escape tunnel for the king where all the worst killers and traitors go to rot for eternity.
If you want to take an inspiration or idea how to build castles and walled cities, then I think you should look how they are build in the Gothic game series. Really great games, great gameplay, great scenery and great atmosphere. But really, even if there was magic in the world of Gothic, the structures IMO seemed real and physically possible, not as if they were holding only because of magic (Xardas excluded of course :D)
The only thing that doesnt sit right with me about the build is the hill behind the castle. Castles are generally built on the highest point in an area, or else it allows enemy besiegers to get a height advantage on the defenders. Crenelated walls are designed to protect defenders from arrows and other debris being lobbed at them from a lower position. A hill that close, overlooking the fortress is a fatal design flaw. I would suggest raising it into an un-scalable peak of the mountain or something, because as it sits, the castle's defenses are basically useless. It looks amazing though aside from that one flaw. The Castle Keep looks really great, and I love the shorter turrets on the outside of the walls below the wall-walk.
maybe a well (can be dried up or something) and maybe it could use some sort of escape plan, just in-case the castle gets invaded and a one-way safe way out would save the royalty
I just had a great idea. You should build the walls and cities from attack on Titan. Just looking at the buildings you have, this game has the right art style to pull it off very well. The only thing you'd be ,issuing would be the people using the 3D maneuvering gear.
to the castle itself. Historically it was built something like this. They had an inner keep (Bergfried), from where the lord would rule. Barracks, stores, storages, etc would be around the keep, protected by a wall. Outside of the wall would be the peasants hovels, shacks and barns with the fields and mills. It's hard to tell you this, but I'd completely rework the frame of the village. Look at old european cities, they were not planned like your american metropoli. They grew "naturally". the rectangular shape of your current layout seems misplaced.
Blacksmith and for the castle you should add counter siege weapons like trebuchets on big wall platforms or behind the wall to help repel larger forces and enemy mechanical weaponry
I believe you are exaggerating the power of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. Although the Church did play a very important role in Medieval life, the nobles of the Middle Ages were not truly subservient to the Church. About the realms: you forgot emperor and the religious heads of state (Prince-Archbishop, Prince-Bishop, etc.).
***** My apologies- I glanced over that. At least I was right on two of them. Oh, by the way- would it hurt too much for you to show some courtesy? I do not mean to sound as though I took offense at your comment; however, I am certain a great deal of people would.
Arin some buildings for you to consider could be perhaps a Smithy, a tavern and a Stable? they would really add to the RP aspect of the castle. great build reminds me alot of Lordaran from Darksouls with it being situated so high on a cliff like that and with its high walls.
DEFINITELY Lordran. I want -- no, NEED -- to see someone make Lordran in this game. Then part of my life shall be complete!
***** YES GIVE THAT MAN A SUNLIGHT MEDAL
Lordran was the name of the area not the castle, anor londo was the castle up on the mountain.
we know
Aaron. His name is spelled Aaron.
You should have different districts in your castle. It would be really cool to have different sections in your keep that will be used for different purposes. It would make your castle a lot more organized and easier to map out and navigate. The Switzerland of kingdoms :D
EVE Online in medieval times.
I wouldn't mind playing that. Sounds awesome.
I would love this! Just got the game about 10mins ago, can't wait to start building!!
NumbWarri0r I got it yesterday and I've already played 6 hours (ik that's not really a lot) and I love it!

It's always fascinating looking inside another persons creative mind.

Can you build Minas Tirith on this hill?
That would be so cool!!
McTurthag Imagine turning on structural integrity just after completing it. You watch as hours of work crumbles into a pile of rubble

It's only the outer wall though and main rockstructure
TheTentacola My god, KEEP BUILDING IT.
Cool, I think a well would work really well as the entrance feature as well as being a necessity to the village.

One thing you might want to add are storehouses, were you would keep food. These were vital during sieges. Also a well for water.
this idea is absolutely awesome, continue on m8
Just plain awesomeness!
Really nice work!
The main thing i felt was off was that all the houses in the village pointed the same way, as in the roofs.

I suggest adding an underground tunnel passage from the upper village and castle area, to your lower defense, and perhaps anywhere else useful.
Somebody should try to build Ba Sing Se in this game...
do you mean the city from avatar(great show by the way ) :)
deystroyai1234 the Earth Kingdom capital!
xEl Gringo Loco sweet!!!!!!
That would be awesome.
It would take years even if the 7 billion people of the world contributed.
you should make the entrance to the village more grand. you look in movies and ruins of actual castles, and the entrances were very grand. this looks like secret passage into the village (also another cool idea)

Awesome job atm and i hope to see some future updates to that!
I would recommend adding more lazers. And perhaps more thusters on that castle.
Joking aside looking mighty handsome there that castle.
build some defensive weapons, such as ballista or catapults.
Also, you need stockpiles and guild centers, along with a really big market.

I love this whole thing you've been doing so far but 2 things stuck out to me. The castle area and the courtyard etc. is quite small for the size of the hill and everything that you're building. cannot wait to upgrade my PC and buy this. i have so many brilliant ideas brewing
love how he said "so I've came quite a lot further since we last saw we where just getting up the walls "

You DEFINITELY need to stream the construction of this
Something that you might want to consider adding would be turrets on the wall where rotating catapults could be put.

you should build some kind of church or tempel on the left side of the main castle and some kind of stables on the right, the town could also use a smeltery and some farms outside the city walls like it used be in the medieval times.
Churches, guard barracks, close able gate, farmland, some big military weapons
awesome castle cant wait to build mine
I think you should add a passageway like in the trailer and beautiful arches on the walls.
I challenge you to build any kind of "Black smith house". Some thing, that could be turned with layter patches, working black smith working shop. Where you could "in theory" hammer sword, sharpen them and even build armor if needed.

Nice job, I can't wait for Multiplayer and Servers, I'd love to have a Virtual job at your Castle!
Maybe you should build something like a aquaduct.
And if there is no water in the game you can use it as a material slide
Perhaps you could build the iconic castle, a castle with walls and a moat around it (without water until the addition of water).

Cool. I hope they actually add NPCs and more RPG elements to both of their games.
You should make some of the houses go opposite directions to make the village look more diverse
It looks absolutely awesome but you shouldn't put the pointy roofs on the towers because this means that the castle is no longer a "château fort" which means it's no longer a stronghold so it doesn't have any military presence or military purpose
looks good the onlything id say is space the houses apart and make like a cobblestone main road
Also different kind of tower and heigts would be nice, can't wait to start myself tomorrow!!
i cant wait untill the devs add so much more building blocks, and ppl start rebuilding whole castles and cities from Skyrim :333
Add some wall catapults or trebuchets and maybe a large mine of some sorts in the slopes of the mountain.
You so need to make an underground network, with the entrance accessible only from the king's castle. You need to be paranoid in your backup plan in case your kingdom is under siege. You should consider making traps as extra defense to your castle.
Supports and braces on the main wall to give it extra strength against attacks.
that is so awesome pls keep us posted on this
I'd recommend that you be careful when you put in interior facing crenelations.
That is very awesome.. I just though of how cool it would with mods and wow does it have potential
Im pretty sure im not the only one who's pointed this out
An Attack On Titan themed mod would work really well with this game.
You should make a castle with all of your ideas built into it
you should try to build some stone walkways between the village houses and make the castle bigger
That really does look fantastic!, I cant wait to see it finished. Would it be possible to put it up on the workshop? A few dimensions in the description would help make a surface large enough for it to fit :)
You should add the village that you already made is like the Royal village and then make a smaller village where it's like presents and stuff like that and more defences
on the lower cliffs you should be little outposts and tunnels that lead up to the main castle
A room for hookahs and even a office for the noble running it all.
with workshop support this game might push foward a really nice siege game
On the hill you should put a bell to signal any incoming attacks
Every castle needs a dungeon! A publicly known dungeon where all your basic law breakers go, and a hidden one with a hidden escape tunnel for the king where all the worst killers and traitors go to rot for eternity.
This game does seem pretty damn cool. I would like to see a survival series in the future. Once the game is a bit more complete that is. ;)
The only thing you'd be ,issuing would be the people using the 3D maneuvering gear.
maega cassul under cunstruction!
This takes me back to the first Stronghold =)
You should make a secret exit in case of a siege through a well where you can collapse the castle from under your enemies.
to the castle itself.
This is unrelated to the castle but, maybe try building some sort of siege tower or ladder. So it could be wheeled up to a wall and a ramp drops.
hello laststandgamers this is an awesome video thanks again lol and that castle is cool
Great, how often did it collapse? Or is SI turned off?
Another question, when will we witness the mysterious destruction of Kevin? :D
Blacksmith and for the castle you should add counter siege weapons like trebuchets on big wall platforms or behind the wall to help repel larger forces and enemy mechanical weaponry
Beautiful! Keep it up!
You should add a scaled down version of your gate but make a more normal castle gate like it falls or is lowered down
Aaron, this is the feudal system(catholic) 1.pope 2.emperor 3.king 4.duke (can be petty king if independent) 5.count 6.baron/mayor/priest
You play too much CKII.
5. Arch bishop of banterbury

My apologies- I glanced over that. At least I was right on two of them.
Oh, by the way- would it hurt too much for you to show some courtesy? I do not mean to sound as though I took offense at your comment; however, I am certain a great deal of people would.

My apologies for not noticing that (see above comments for explanation).
