This is actually really hard for me, I keep messing up by doing it a beat too early, I have no idea how you're so good at keeping it at the fourth beat. Good job by the way, I love your videos
Jay Storm Think of it as a drum beat in the song. The slap comes with every 4th beat like the snare drum comes in most songs. I hope this helps, thanx for watching
People are asking; It is down, up slap on the next down then up down up again then slap down. Three movements. Always Slap on the down. The 3 movements are critical, do not do 5, or 6 Just count the Start with down and then up then as you come down on the -4th down stroke you can slap on that down stroke. Start slowly and you will build up speed. do not rush if a beginner.
The best description of this movement I had ever seen. I learned strumming pattern before but If I would saw your comment earlier I would learn this much faster :) Greetings from Poland everyone :)
Ughhh, your explanation helped me a lot, I am still a beginner... but I think you also have to keep in mind the slap strum (the down mute)... the pick needs to end up below the high E so that the next up down up slap starts in the right place...
WOW!!! Marty, I seem to have found my virtual instructor. Many thanks. I've had trouble with other video instructors usually because they are so long winded. I really appreciate your clean, crisp, to the point teaching style. I am super excited to have discovered you. Thank you for making these videos.
Thank you for showing me the 'slap' Marty never tried it before and thank you for the relaxed instruction one can feel the reserved confidence and the love of song, which makes you and I share something in common. After a couple of weeks my playing is better already,...You Marty You!
+ronny b That's awesome and also sounds like a song title, I'm glad I could help in your Holiday Cheer, rest assured, I have had many "shots of Slap Strum" myself over the years, thanx for tuning in and the best of luck to you in 2016!!
Im a big capo user. I usually put everything in G shapes and just move capo to where it fits my voice. It seems to work for me. thanks again for your videos!
Marty - you are the Man!!! Awesome videos and very helpful. Thrilled I found your material. I love all the songs you cover. Keep 'em coming. Thank you!!!
+Gilbert Tunney I'll try my best!! I'm glad you like my channel, thanx for tuning in and make sure you come back every Thursday when I release a new tune to learn, good luck and take care
I just recently subscribed to your videos and think they are great. As someone who has only been playing for about a year these videos are really helpful.
Thanx for your kind words and for subscribing and I'm glad the vids are helping you out. The trick to guitar is to just keep playing and keep learning and I promise, it will give you endless hours of enjoyment.
I find it hard to teach the strumming pattern as it's always been a "feel the beat" sort of thing for me. I do know, from experience, if you play along and continue to practice, the strum pattern will just sort of come. But for simplistic purposes the pattern for this vid would be: Down-Up-Down with a mute and then repeat, I hope this helps
Awesome Marty! This makes me sound like I can really play now. At first I couldn't figure out how you were slapping while keeping time with the down stroke and realized that most of my slap sound is from hitting the muted strings on the down stroke rather than slapping the strings to frets. Sounds great. Keep up the great videos!
You are a WONDERFUL instructor! I love how you get to the point about what you're teaching ...I'm like a sponge throughout the entire video :) Thank you! Id like to make a few request for you if thats ok ...just when you have time..no rush :) (I didn't see these on your channel, if they're already there I apologize) I just found you, but will keep you in the top of my favorites. 1- Piano Man 2-Dock Of The Bay 3-I'm a Believer 4-Build Me Up Buttercup 5-American Pie 6-Lean on Me 7-Mr Bojangles 8-Cats in the Cradle 9-Dancing in the Moonlight 10-Bad Moon Rising Gosh. there's so many that I have printed and in my book to learn, but here's 10. Thanks again! You're the BEST for easy guitar instructionals!
Marty, what's the reason behind what you're doing with your left hand? I notice you're releasing the strings on your left hand also. Is that just because on the slap strum part, you don't need to be forming a chord with your left, perhaps?
Hello partymarty I am 50 plus years I started learning guitar aprox 2 years ago and I am learning on my own. I love your videos it has helped me a lot. I am trying to learn the slap strum and in your video you do the mute on the 3rd strum but then do i come back up with the strum or start again. Thanks wilson.
Welcome!! I'm glad you made it. Thanx. Hey I am trying reach 100k subscribers, please pass the word along about my channel to your buds, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx for tuning in, Take care and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
this is an awesome video thank you. I've been trying to figure this out to play stand by me... and I found your video for that song too... thanks for taking the time to do these videos. it really helps
You are very welcome. I am glad you like them. Hey I am trying reach 100k subscribers, please pass the word along about my channel to your buds, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx for tuning in, Take care to you and yours
Thank you for your sub, I really appreciate it. Hey I am trying reach 100k subscribers, please pass the word along about my channel to your buds, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx for tuning in, Take care and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Thanx again my friend for your continued support. You are very welcome. Hey I am trying reach 100k subscribers, please pass the word along about my channel to your buds, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx for tuning in, Take care and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Hey Marty. Thanks for your teaching videos. I'm playing since 6 months and have difficult to repeat what I see in your videos. E.g. the slap strum: You say you strum 3 times and you start with downward, that would mean your slap would follow on an up-strum, but in fact you are doing a downstrum.... can you do the full movement slower, like in slow motion. Sorry if I bore all the advanced folks.Cheers
+Lat 2 The slap strum is something I add for a little extra color to a song, it is NOT mandatory in any of the vids I do, I merely add it to make it sound a little better. The slap can come in any part of the strum pattern, it is up to you to make it your own. I generally put it in where the song would have a snare drum beat in it, I hope this helps. Please don`t get hung up on the slap strum until you are comfortable playing the chords and the song. Good luck
Like this slap strum trick that you use. I note that you have electric guitars on the wall behind you. I am new to guitar but it is next thing on my bucket list to conquer. I am in 2 minds about getting a electric or acoustic to start with. Tempted to go electric. Can all these songs that you do so well be done on the electric guitar?
+Pat Flynn Yes indeed for sure, I would rather anyone start on acoustic to break your fingertips in and then go electric but to each his own, whatever gives you pleasure i always say. Good luck deciding and take care
You're the MAN, Marty. I'm having fits trying to get this down. I've always kind of been of the mind that when you palm mute (like a chuck) you're pressing strings with the palm and strumming, but it kind of looks like you're brushing the strings with your palm but not actually picking. Is that how you do it?
That's pretty much it, I lightly graze the strings with my pick while muting with my palm, that is about as good as I can explain it, I hope that helps, good luck!!!
I have question about that. So the fourth move should be twice faster than others because we need to strum then mute with palm or it should be the same speed on four strums?
Any tips for doing this without a pick? I feel like I can't angle my hand right to both hit the strings with my thumb, and slap the strings in the same movement.
Hi Marty ! Been practicing the slap strum . Any advice how to keep control of the pick ... it always wants to turn on me or fly out of my hand when I do the slap strum . Thanks for all the awesome lesson !
Thanks Marty. Great tip and it sounds great. Hey Marty, I'm lovin this Chris Stapelton song Tennessee Whiskey. Any chance you could do a video? I'm a beginner/intermediate so not good with barr cords :( Thanks
Thank you, I'm glad you think so. That's a great tune, I have a huge load of requests right now but I will add it to my list of possible future projects, thanx for your suggestion and for tuning in, take care
Thanks for the tips Marty but I was wondering on how I could make sure I really mute all strings because I tend to leave the standard E string un muted its difficult to stop all 6 strings
Use your thumb to mute the top string, try it see how that works. Good luck. Hey, I am trying to reach 100k subscribers and would really appreciate it if you tell your buds about my channel, Thanx for helping me spread the word!! and thanx for tuning in and take care to you and yours.
I'm actually learning drift away by dobie gray by watching your video and I was wondering how you did the slap strum. Thanks! Oh btw, can you make a video showing us how you did the little bass line in the beginning of that song?
lomparti Thanx for watching, I'll keep your suggestions in mind for a future project. I have a slap strum demo vid if you would like to watch it, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/XgVENDW3OvU/w-d-xo.html Thanx again, and take care.
PartyMarty EasyGuitarTunes Thanks, Ive already watched it a while ago. But trying to figure out that bass line is driving me nuts. Do you know of another how to vid on youtube?
you should be lightly touching them with the pick on the downstrum, and then muting with the fatty of your thumb. Hope this helps. Hey listen, I’m trying to reach 100k subscribers, please pass the word about my channel along to your friends, I’d really appreciate it.
I am fairly new self taught via TH-cam (Few real lessons). Is the Slap strum kinda like hitting the bassnote ? Seems from what i have learned thus far that both work on some songs.I can use any help an advice i can get. Thanks
Hi there, I wouldn't say base notes per say. This is more of a technique that I learned over the years that adds a sort of drum beat to your song. I mostly play solo gigs so I find that the muted or slap strum technique works in most songs to give it a drum beat feel. Hope this helps. Thanx for watchin'
When u do the muting, why do u remove your left hand fingers from the fret??? Is it necessary to do so??? If i don't do it, what will happen??? Plz let me know as soon as possible
Still having a little problem with slap strumming, kinda throws my timing off, any suggestions? I play your songs good without the slap strum but I like the sound
It's a little tough at first, I know but stick with it, it will come. Think of it as a drum beat to the song and if your timing while strumming to the song is correct, then the mute strum should fit right in with the beat of the song you are playing. To simplify it, strum down up down/mute, up down up down/mute, up down up down/mute. Just try and strum to any even rhythm instead of trying to do it to a song at first and once you get comfortable with it, then try it with a song you know and see what happens. Thanx for your kind words, thanx for watching and good luck. Lemme know how it goes
I am having trouble with slap strumming as my right wrist is fused due to an industrial accident some years back and all the strumming motion has to come from the elbow and fingers. do you have any suggestions?
I always tell my students to strum with the wrist more than the arm, if you can't do that, I'm afraid it may be difficult to use the slap strum technique. I suggest practice it a few different ways until it sounds good to you, you may have to improvise a little, and I am hopeful you will find success, good luck and keep me posted on progress, good luck
OK Marty, I must be the dumb one in the room. 60 seconds seems like it should be easy and all the other kids in the class seem to get it. Are you hitting the strings with your palm first and then strumming through? like, you can do it without forming a chord even. LOVE THE CHANNEL!
Hi there, I always have a chord formed while slap strumming. I generally strum first and then slap strum on the 4th beat of the song I'm playing. The slap usually goes in time with the drum beat in a song. So if you know what a snare drum sounds like, that is when you slap strum in a song. I hope that helps and thanx for watching
Hi there, Thanx for your kind words, I have a lot of requests that I'm answering but I'll look at trying to put something together for you in the near future. Thanx for watching
Hi There, That's a cool song, I'll put it on the list. I'm pretty busy with other requests right now but I will keep your's in mind for a possible future project. Thanx for watchin'
That is a great tune, I am trying to answer a lot of requests right now but will keep this in mind for a possible future project. Thanx for tuning in and good luck to you
Thank you very much for your support it is very much Much appreciated. There’s a donate link in the info section on my vids but here’s the link. Thank you again www.paypal.me/PartyMartyEGT
+terpking You have to open your mind my friend, there are many variations of the slap strum, this video is to try and explain what I am doing. I've played this technique many different ways, try go up to down and vice versa. On the slap it will always be a down slap as it sounds better than slapping up strum. I hope this helps, thanx for tuning in and good luck

How did you learn to talk in free time while keeping a perfect strum rhythm?
Just doing it enough and it will feel naturally
😅
That’s the only video that has explained it properly thanks Marty
At New Years Eve party, the last thing I recall drink'n was a "shot of Slap Strum"
Thank you, its easy to watch n learn...

+Raega Thank you, Yes it is a great little tool, thanx for tuning in and good luck
Simply put: The first time you strum 3 times (down, up, slap) but everything that occurs after that you are strumming 4 times (up, down, up, slap.).
I could not figure out the slap strum until I saw your video. Took me two minutes. THANKS!!
+Gidget Girl You are very welcome, I`m happy I could help, thanx for tuning in!! Good luck and take care

One question. How do you decipher the strumming patterns .
I find it hard to teach the strumming pattern as it's always been a "feel the beat" sort of thing for me. I do know, from experience, if you play along and continue to practice, the strum pattern will just sort of come. Introducing the chords before the songs as you do is very useful and informative. Does the slap strum technique work with the electric guitar?
Will definitely use this! Thanks for the tip Marty!
Yup, it's a fun and effective tool, glad you like it
You're the MAN, Marty. I'm having fits trying to get this down. Thanks Marty. Great tip and it sounds great. Hey Marty, I'm lovin this Chris Stapelton song Tennessee Whiskey. Any chance you could do a video? I'm a beginner/intermediate so not good with barr cords :(
Thanks

that's great, I am glad you found a way to learn, good luck with it
I'm actually learning drift away by dobie gray by watching your video and I was wondering how you did the slap strum. Thanks! Oh btw, can you make a video showing us how you did the little bass line in the beginning of that song?
I'm sure it would make a great how to video for a bass line intro to many songs.
lomparti Thanx for watching, I'll keep your suggestions in mind for a future project. I have a slap strum demo vid if you would like to watch it, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/XgVENDW3OvU/w-d-xo.html
Thanx again, and take care.
PartyMarty EasyGuitarTunes Thanks, Ive already watched it a while ago. But trying to figure out that bass line is driving me nuts. Do you know of another how to vid on youtube?
PartyMarty EasyGuitarTunes Lol. ok. I think I found some tutorials. "Walking bass line" is what its called right?
Hey Marty, Can you please help me with the slap strum? Is it down, up, down hit. Keeping the fingers on the one chosen chord? Regards, Barton
Should I be hitting the strings with with the fatty part of my thumb also? Our just the side of the hand?
you should be lightly touching them with the pick on the downstrum, and then muting with the fatty of your thumb. Hope this helps. Hey listen, I’m trying to reach 100k subscribers, please pass the word about my channel along to your friends, I’d really appreciate it.
Marty. Looking for a easy way to play November rain by guns and roses. But more like the Steve n seagulls version
Do you have any idea what the strum pattern for "We're here for a good time" by chance?
I am fairly new self taught via TH-cam (Few real lessons). Is the Slap strum kinda like hitting the bassnote ? Seems from what i have learned thus far that both work on some songs.I can use any help an advice i can get. Thanks

Does a palm of hand work too?
Yer the man party marty
Thanx!! i'm glad you think so
On the Slap Strum is the patter D-U-D-SS?
When u do the muting, why do u remove your left hand fingers from the fret???
Is it necessary to do so???
If i don't do it, what will happen???
Plz let me know as soon as possible
Rok's reply below is correct, I hope this explains it for you. Good luck with it
Correct Rok, thanx
Still having a little problem with slap strumming, kinda throws my timing off, any suggestions? I play your songs good without the slap strum but I like the sound
It's a little tough at first, I know but stick with it, it will come. Thanx Sally Pants!!
I get the the every 3 up down mute but is that when you change chords? I know that is specific but im a slow starter.
1 2 3 4,, you that on 2 and 4 right? 1&slap3&slap..thx
+Willem Last you got it!!
This is what I need to learn, so slow at it right now.

Off, not as effective though
Did you start with an up strum?

is the strumming pattern U-D-U-D(SLAP)??
yes!!
Can this slap strum work when I play without a pick
not as good on an accoustic, as the pick helps with the slap sound. Maybe on an electric but still not the same, good luck!!
Thank you, I like your lessons, been learning mostly from your videos

I see you starting up with an up strum, down strum, up strum then slap.... you said you start down? I do not see that
+terpking You have to open your mind my friend, there are many variations of the slap strum, this video is to try and explain what I am doing. I've played this technique many different ways, try go up to down and vice versa. On the slap it will always be a down slap as it sounds better than slapping up strum. I hope this helps, thanx for tuning in and good luck
Thank You
