One of the hardest things imaginable is to come up with that first line of a song. In a way, getting that line thrown at you from someone like Maynard is quite the gift. The proof is in the Hefty pile of great music that came out of your Association

Thanks Denny, these stories are always so welcomed and appreciated. Life with Maynard sounds like it was always a good time, thanks for giving us the inside view that most of us could only dream about.

Have to share a story with you Denis. Grew up with parents who were professionals (father a computer engineer & mother a librarian) both were also musicians (father played standup bass player & mother a piano player). Grew up listening to a lot of classic & jazz music on father's (awesome) Quad stereo system. My brother started playing trumpet at a young age (5 y/o) and long story short in his adult life became a professional musician (though we have gone our own separate ways to put it nicely). Because of my parents musical backgrounds and my brother being a trumpet player ended listening to Maynard practically every day of my childhood. Also any time Maynard would come within 50 or so miles away we'd go here him live (were on the bands mailing list as well). Saw Maynard's band live nearly 20 times and always amazed. Well Maynard being who he was knew you were from the area (I swam every summer at Woodbine swim club in your hometown of Pennsauken, for grew up in neighboring Cherry Hill) and would always it seemed give you a shout out (& let you do your thing..). He was such a bright personality & how he shared the spotlight with the array of exceptional musicians he recruited was a treasure & pleasure to watch. It is such a shame jazz such a fantastic musical style fell out of the mainsteam. Not being a musician myself fell in line with most of my friend into classic rock influences. Though I've seen countless artist over my near 55 year life no band gave the thrill that Maynard (& company including/especially yours truly..) did. Know you ended up as the music director at Rowen and good/lucky for them! Only found you recently on TH-cam (of course now subbed.) but very glad I did so as well. Thanks for the stories & great memories! Best wishes to you and your family - stay well..

I believe Carl Anderson sang it on the recording.

Any chances you can describe how Maynard would rehearse a new chart? For instance, Bebop Buffett, pretty tough chart, especially the horn parts. How was that all squeezed in while travelling/touring?

Anybody know where I can find that recording of “Days of Wine and Roses” that plays towards the end of the video?

What’s the song playing at the beginning of the video?
