  • Oregon’s legendary governor took office 55 years ago, on January 9, 1967.
Tom McCall remains one of the state’s most renowned political figures.
His bold achievements set a new standard for the rest of the nation: The Beach Bill and the Bottle Bill, the SB100 land-use law-all legislation that emerged from the McCall years form an indispensable fabric of Oregon life today.

When I was a kid in Hood River I got to meet him, at some function there. He had always impressed me. Now I live in central Oregon and always enjoy driving past his ranch west of Prineville. Read the book, "Ranch under the rimrock" by his mother, Dorothy L. McCall. I remember seeing him do the news on TV and also enjoying reading his articles in the Oregonian. R,.I.P., Maverick!

The best Oregon governor ever! He cared and loved Oregon and it's people so much. He exceeded his role as governor by thinking outside the box & being committed to the people and the land for all of the right reasons.

The governor and his wife got to see me land a trout at Devil's Lake where I was fishing with my dad. They were there alone - so it was probably after he had served as governor. I was a small kid, and his wife got a bit excited while I was reeling in the trout - telling him to go and help me land it. :-) He must have realized that I knew what I was doing because he just calmly watched me successfully catch it. Even as a young child I got the sense that he was a great governor. I fondly remember that time in the political landscape because we could agree that the person made the difference. It didn't matter so much what party they were in - at least in Oregon.

A balanced education for a child growing up being exposed to a wealthy lifestyle and its many facets and in Oregon he was exposed to an education which was literally down to earth. He was personally exposed to humble people economically and environmentally was directly involved with conservation and to achieve power through his journalist avenues and politics. He learned by his mistakes and using both sides of his heritage became an exceptional Governor.

My favorite "Oregon Experience" episode and it looks at my favorite Oregon Governor! :D He was truly brilliant and one of the last great figures from the Republican Party (which is now complete crap), and of course, he made so many great contributions to this state. I'll certainly make it a tradition to reflect on McCall's legacy every March 22 this year onward.
March 22 was his birthday and Governor Brown made it Tom McCall Day in 2015 in his honor.

I remember him and when the Oregon Coast was open public lands and free to enter for everyone to walk the beach. Not so true anymore. Most of it for the past 25 years, a daytime fee is charged. No longer free for public access. Either a State fee or Federal fee depending on the access you want to visit. We need another Governor like him again.

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES... preserving nature in the vast majority of Oregon's geography forced industry (and consequent population growth) to concentrate in small / select areas. Democracy forced public policy to conform to that geographic 'select'.

Sure he was a great Governor , only his bottle bill has turned into a dumpster fire and his grand land use policies have caused home values to be inflated to a point where average Oregonians can't afford a home of which the Urban growth boundary now has outlived its usefulness. How about the runaway building permit cost of today, cost more for a building permit to build a home than the price of a home in the 80's. While I liked Tom McCall some of his policies have been a disaster for working Oregonians. Tom McCall would be aghast at the way the bottle bill has changed the landscape of urban areas like Portland, its to bad that the folks that run this state can't get their heads out of the sand and fix these problems with anew solutions that make a dent in home prices while continuing to control urban sprawl and find new ways to reinvent the bottle bill in a way that makes the cans and bottles more valuable to average Oregonians instead of drug addicts and the houseless.

The 2021 revision to the Oregon State Anthem is less an an accommodation to revisionist-history than an evolutionary embrace of 'a kinder gentler world'. Any skeptics are free to examine the public records which document the military honors accorded members of the Oregon National Guard and Active-Duty warriors who proudly declare themselves OREGONIANS.
