      He just loves to ride his bike, he wins what he wins, but always seems to have fun. Can’t say there’s anything wrong with that.
      I’m sure the sponsors might want some bigger races wins but it would not be Pog anymore to be too calculated about it.

  • @shajardror

    I admire Poga because:
    He attacks.
    He goes for wins, he risks it every time.
    He can go long or finish in the sprint.
    Always smiles.
    In stage races he goes for as many Ws as possible. Not just GC and protect your lead.
    In 1 day and especially in monuments, he can wait till the last climb long or short or he can attack from a distance.
    When in the lead late in TDF and the GC well in hand, he still attacked on the last GC day. Not once, not twice but 3 times and still won against both hes rivals.

    I'm excited to see Pogačar winning more throughout the year. Nobody knows for sure, but I think we're in the middle of seeing history being made, that being Pogačar's record-setting career. He's so much more than a big VO2 max rider; he's so well-rounded. I'm also excited to see if Van Aert can have another miracle year; watching him on the tour and elsewhere made for an amazing year for us cycling spectators. And then there's Evenepoel just coming into his own; he appears to have ridiculous potential, and aerobic talent; I can't wait to see where he goes in the next 10+ years.

    Pogacar is an interesting character, g0at level ability which gives him confidence to do the most alien things on the bike but is also the same hubris that lost him the TdF, maybe it's his age but if he matures a little more as a racer he would be unbeatable. Doing things like pulling and attacking for no reason when he doesn't need to is fine for these small races but at the Tour he's just making it harder on himself

    • @gcnracing
      @gcnracing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He certainly is an entertainer!

    • @prestachuck2867
      @prestachuck2867 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. I think when he was being triple-teamed by Wout, Roglich, and Vingo, he could have at least just let Roglich’s attacks go unanswered since we all knew Primoz was severely injured and was not going to make it to the finish in front of the others. The climb was too steep and the altitude a touch too high for Wout who ended getting dropped anyway. When you look at all the circumstances of that day, Vingo should have been his only concern.
      But then, we all have the benefit of watching from a distance after the fact. It’s a whole other thing to try to make those assessments during the pressure of racing. Beats me why Pog’s DS didn’t help him out with his tactics via the ever so controversial race radio.

    You know what would be really cool? If at the end of each racing news show you showed the UCI points standing so we could keep up with what's going on that front. I know the next relegation is three year from now but would be cool to see the evolution of what teams are on the top and what teams at the bottom week after week.

    Vinegaard concentrates on one race only, the big one in July, while Pogacar will have a go at Strade, Milan San Remo, Flanders and Liège and he might win the lot! He can beat the best one day riders on one day races and the GC guys in GT. He is the greatest of our time even if MVDP and Wout are so much fun to watch.

  • @kestralrider313

    I loved the graph Dan; it really surprised me to see Evenepool was so high, but I should not be surprised, given that his flat-out power in solos is just ridiculous. One big difference that doesn't show up in the graph is the type and level of each win. Pogocar seems to be heavily weighted with big grand tours and classics races, but I haven't confirmed this. I love Cavendish, but I'm not even sure that it's fair to show his wins on the graph, given his narrower specialty. I think whether pogocar becomes the goat will depend on how long he can stay at/near his current form. Some riders, like say Chris Horner can race and win at ages long after most cyclists have retired. There must be many examples of cyclists who seemed to stay competitive in their mid-late 30s.

    My take is that TP will be fine for the TDF. I think number 2 is Primos R. Ηe is in the Giro and will likely not be as strong in the later weeks of the TDF. That leaves Jonas V. He doesn’t look that good to me this year. Maybe someone new will rise up or Garant T can have a miracle. Don’t see it. I think TP can race all the classics he wants and the TDF will be his to win or lose. Happy to see it as long as he’s legal.

    I think you really can’t compare riders from different decades. Can’t compare Merckx with Pogacar. Pogacar rn is the best for me.
    I think he also would have won the TdF last year with a better team. At one point it was Pogacar vs whole Jumbo-Visma (Vingegaard, Van aert,…). So with w better team or with a less strong Jumbo Team it would be more interesting.

    A comparison made of statistics, which had a token head nod to how times have changed, but reminds me of the Mark Twain observation: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”
    Mercx also won 17 six day races and a smattering of other track titles. He also regularly rode the Giro-Tour double, which is unheard of in modern times, taking the double 3 out of the 4 times he attempted it and also taking one Giro-Vuelta double on a year he didn't enter the Tour.
    When analysed beyond win rate the differences are glaring and possibly highlight a bigger difference in how riders raced in different eras than they do the differences in rider capabilities.
    Is it even possible, with how racing now is - with race calendar changes, team depth, modern tactics, rider specialisations and roles, better understanding of physiology and recovery, etc. for any rider to hope to average around 50 wins a year at the highest level when it is likely to be impossible to ride the volume of races required to attain the 29% win rate of Eddy Merckx? No-one rides 150 races a year anymore, especially not at the highest level which makes the win rate per race entered even higher for modern riders - a near impossibility as it would mean winning many, many more classics and grand tour stages each year making these races even more physiologically taxing than they already are.
    Stop with the comparisons of only quantity and enjoy marvelling at the quality the each rider shows and possesses.

    Pogacar is arguably the best rider of this generation as well as the biggest drawing card. He may not be the absolute best climber, time trialist, or sprinter, but his overall abilities make him the complete package. Also, some of the comparisons with others like Sagan, Cavendish and Kittel may not be appropriate since they are primarily sprinters who typically won several stages and one-day races as bunch sprints, but not a whole lot of GCs. Eddy Merckx still represents the Everest of cycling, just like Bradman in cricket and possibly some of his feats will never be matched even by Pogacar. As for Evenepoel, he is probably a better time trialist, but not as good a climber which is why Pog blew him away at the 2022 Tirreno. Of course, Remco made remarkable progress after that, winning LBL, the Vuelta and WC, so the next few match ups would be very interesting.

    Ladies and gentlemen, the cobbled races begin this weekend. Yes! Let the bumpy games begin.
    As far as this GOAT stuff goes, there isn't really anyone in my opinion, and I'm taking nothing away from the great racers of today or any other era. Merckx was the greatest of his era, but there were people who were faster at certain specialties. Merckx himself said his most famous 6-day partner, Patrick Sercu, was a faster sprinter than he was. Nobody has ever dominated cycling like he did in so many different ways, and nobody ever will because the nature of racing has changed. Some racers sort of dabble in different disciplines like he did, but nobody races seasons as long as was common during that era. Arguably there are the greatest racers of an era, but there really isn't a GOAT in my opinion.

    wins/age is not the correct metric. wins/years of racing would be much better (maybe get Cillian involved here). Is POG the GOAT? no if he stopped riding tadej (couldn't help that) we would not think he was the best ever.

    However... however... 33 year old Nairo Quintana has 51 wins as Pro has 2 mayor GT wins ... and somehow UCI black list him and seems GCN and Eurosport as well ... DUE a lack or excess of spine to confront Autority ... and now his name seems forgot into oblivion as one if not the first of those young disruptor type of rising star cyclist that put in serious trouble the establish ones and the bigger teams... am I biassed ... Yes... sooo we can stop in this point of Pog career and start to recap os see that Jonas is the brand new story BUT then since that Quintana names like Bernal or Primoz even Alaphilipe rise and then Pog now Jonas ... But make room there are more... MVDP and WVA are coming Tommy P... Jay H... Carapaz ... Lopez... capable to reach 50 I really don't know... BUT I digress... 51 wins Quintana already reach that number and put many more numbers and is not in the conversation, BUT ina black list.

    Same question same answer. No. Why do I get sucked into the GCN game?😂. Answer remains Merckx until his numbers are eclipsed. Simple as that. Grand tours, classics, hour, worlds, spring stages races blah blah blah. No one really compares overall. Plus his company made some fine bikes that many world tour teams rode to success before the great American bike takeover

      Mercx is goat of his era, but you cant compare him to today racing when winnig a race is like 10x harder than it was back in 70s. And also there is doping too back in that times, so.... So for me its Sagan who is goat for now. we will see how Pogačar and Remco will proceed.

      @tywitt3351 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@milantichy4413 10 times harder? Recency bias maybe. Not sure that I buy that. At that time it was the major sport, much more so than today. For certain training science and equipment is better now but that doesn’t take away from his constant domination over years and all categories of races and events. That said these are just theoretical discussions between us and good fodder over a Guinness 😊🍺

      @@tywitt3351 You really want to say, that today, Merxc would outsprint Sagan, Outclimeb Pogačar , out timetrial Ganna ? You must understand the fact, that Merxc won so many races because there were no sprinter specialists, climb specialists, time trial specialists back then. Thats it. Merxc didnt need to deal with 60kg climbers like Allaphillipe, Pogačar etc...or with timetrial specialist that only practice one thing all over again. There is your answer why winning today is 10x harder.

      @@milantichy4413 Sorry friend buys it’s naive to think that each period didn’t also have specialists. Merckx was before me but every period has had special sprinters climbers and TT specialist. Today is not different and not special. In 10-15 years there will be another. Every person you named has multiple people with similar achievements or better in previous years. Resist the urge of recency bias and let’s appreciate what we have now with a TP who is also very special and acknowledge the complete domination of a man from Belgium 🇧🇪 a long time ago. Given that the history of cycling continues to repeat itself, and "too good to be true" always turns out to be exactly that, I find it incredible after Lance that everyone thinks this time it's different. After Pog went nuclear and rolled Rog in THAT TT and we had the iconic picture of Wout and Tom folded arms and jaws dropped, everyone was rolling their eyes and saying here we go again. Three years later and cycling is pro wrestling again, Pog is even more ridiculous and you clowns are the main cheer leaders and we're supposed to love him! Human nature huh? Sucks.

  • @roberthenri9945
    @roberthenri9945 ปีที่แล้ว

    Leaving Lance out of the discussion is unexceptable. His accomplishments have never been equalled and whatever performance enhancements that he availed himself of, were par for the course in that era and I doubt delivered any better results than what is achieved with modern training and nutrition science and technology evolution. His biggest sin was not being European and he's been the victim not only of American-phobia, but the most epic bout of hypocrisy and bandwagon jumping ever recorded. He was the greatest and no amount of trashing his legacy will change that. Sorry POG, the finish line is a lot further down the road😉
