@robbyddurham1624 You could say that Sam's character was a traumatized Vietnam vet which was why it was such a touchy subject for him, especially when someone told him inaccurate information on it (the girl's response on why US troops were pulled out). But Sam got just as set off when talking about the Korean War with Rodney, was Sam a veteran of that war too? You can believe Vietnam, especially if he went out there during the last years of it (1973-1975), but he looked too young to have been at least 18 at the time of the Korean War since that was the early 1950s

@TheHound I saw him live 4 times when he was working this bit before it came out on the album. He would live call from someone in the audience. If it was scripted, they did an excellent fucking job of it. Every time I saw it, it turned out completely different and funny as hell. One of the girls snarked back. Sam called her and said, "Hey, I'm sitting here with Jared and about 5000 of his friends (or whomever, I don't remember his name)..." and she immediately cut in with "Tell Jared to fuck himself" and hung up. It was funnier than all the rest.
I can't say or not whether or not they planned it, but the look on Sam's face was great. He dropped the act, looked down at Jared (??) calmly said, "I think you're really just better off without this one, brother," and then gave that evil little giggle he had. We fell out.

Fun fact, Sam was a preacher before he became a comic. When he does his yelling, that's an old preacher trick where he doesn't actually yell, he modulates his voice higher and pushes a button on the mic to amplify his voice.
It's to save his voice giving multiple sermons on a daily basis.

The tragic thing is Kinison's and Dangerfield's characters in this movie are actually correct. The US can and should have won both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The ability was there and there's a good chance that if the US had won things would have turned out better for everyone. What was lacking in both cases was the political will.

I don't think it's true for Vietnam. First of all I understand Ho Chi Minh referenced a famous Jefferson speech at his graduation and had affinity for the west but gradually changed his mind after being hung out to dry by them, or feeling that to be true.
I don't remember what that statement alluded to except that he had free market ideas to begin with and gradually came to see it differently after repeated attempts to build bridges had failed. I cant state this with much confidence as I don't recall much about it. But depending it's veracity it may have been avoidable had things developed differently.
Certainly they'd had enough of colonisation.
Whether anyone could have defeated the Vietnamese is doubtful. Read the account of the fall of Dem Bien Fu to gain a sense of why.
Once it started they were not going to be defeated, period, by anybody.
American political apathy was a problem but always will be if enough time passes and the threat isn't understood to be personal or substantial enough, whether it's true or not. That's a big problem.
      Have a good night

@h20 Vietnam was lost because General William Westmorland had no strategy for winning the war at all. It was a declared "police action," not a war. There was no strategy to invade Hanoi or North Vietnam and defeat the NVA. And the tactics used against the VC showed little or no insight into insurgency and guerilla warfare and only turned the South Vietnamese against the US military forces.

I watch this movie at least once a month, one of my favorites of all time. Sam Kinison was unique and cracks me up each time I see this. When he's screaming at Rodney, watch how Rodney couldn't contain his laughter, just awesome. This movie was also one of Sally Kellerman's best performances, the way she walked into Thorton's party, trying to act cool lol!

I remember seeing this movie as a kid. This was the first time I ever saw Sam or Rodney in performance. I had never heard their stand up before this. This movie made me really enjoy seeing them in other movies and stand up they did. R.I.P. Sam and Rodney.

Never caught this before, but Hollywood snuck in a bit of popular myth in Kinison's lines. Prof. Turguson asks: "Why, in 1975, we pulled our Troops out of Vietnam?" In truth, the US pulled our Troops out of Vietnam in 1973, as part of the Paris Peace Accords. It took the NVA another two years to topple the South. About the only US Military personnel left in Vietnam were the US Embassy guards in Saigon.

Oh man anywhere & anytime you want to laugh, look no further than Sam or Rodney along with so many unique characters in the older days if Comedy. If it offended you cause you got sorta picked on at a show .NO ONE cry babied you were so glad to be there and no one was hurt but falling off your chair funny. Nothing was off limits. That's what made it so great. Good comedians are equal opportunity offenders. Just take it & be glad they singled you out. It makes you wonder whether we will have the chances to see that kind of talent anytime soon. There are still some great Comedians enjoy them every chance we can get.
