Had to refresh my memory and good god that actress *nailed it* as Liza! She's a woman who's been caricatured so many times (even by herself) that it's so easy to go too big but wow, she really managed to keep it small enough to be well rounded but still get that star quality across without making it comic. That's a skill.
You Tube is smart. I was trying to figure out why this came up on my feed and then recalled I looked up interviews with Halston after I watched the Netflix series.
Various awards?...she has won every important award possible..emmy,grammy,oscar,tony...in the 70's ,she was a major multitalented star all over the word...she remains a legend in europe because we are more faithful to artists we love even when they are less in the public eye..in america you treat them as kleenex when they are less in the medias...
This song shouldn’t work for so many reasons, and yet it’s famous, popular and loved over 50 years later. Non one else can sing it so it should be limited in its appeal and it’s entirely self-referential and could easily be narcissistic and complaining but in Liza’s hands it’s endearing and unforgettable.
I have never understood that. Every other letter is just...the letter. Why is “z” “zed”? I guess no one knows. And the British can-rightfully-reply-“we were here first. It’s zed.” Fine. Just...not when you come across the pond. Z.
@@cards0486 Z is pronounced zed in French. I studied the French language decades ago. Beginners French, one learns the pronunciation of the entire alphabet. This information is for the entire post/thread. I assume without knowing, that Liza used zed to emphasize that Liza has a z, not an s. Also I remember very well viewing this Liza tv special. At age 17, growing up on Long Island, NY. My roots. 😊
Holy Cow... I thought John Kander & Fred Ebb wrote this for her in 1972...for her TV special! What a kick to find it was five years earlier (and so Judy heard it.). Fascinating - love it! Thank you for posting!!
I remember this wBandstahen it first came out on television in the sixties, I was 8 years old and was immediately taken with Liza, she looked like her father but I thought she always had a lot of Judy's quirky mannerisms, yet at the same time was distinctly herself. To this day she is one of my favorite entertainers.
One of a kind! Clever gal. Sustained, genius performer, over lo these many years. And devilishly fantastic as The Stand-poor Corporation. AKA Lucille 2. 😂
Wow. Thought this was written for her when she filmed "Liza with a Z" in '72. In other words, I though this was post Judy!Wonder what Judy thought of this. BTW, she was named after the classic Gershwin song...wonder why so many people didn't know this name!!
It’s amazing how much she looks like her father here. And always. But especially here. Young, and with that short hair. If you had a photo of Vicente Minnelli at that age and compare it to her here, they’d look like twins.
its so interesting when talented people who have kids who have talent too. it's like there's a special gene that they pass down, they have to physically be able to perform but also have the mentality to use their skill. it's interesting
That look is only for the show,it fits for the song ,she plays like a child...her look was yet interesting long before halston..you see a thing on netflix...and you know something about an artist...i think you know nothing about her..neither her carreer nor her as an artist.
They weren't shorts; they were actually underwear with lace trim that was designed to the seen below the hem of the dress. They were known - I kid you not - as "witches britches". They were a hot fashion item for about a minute-and-a-half in the late sixties. Even my middle-aged aunt bought them in a fit of fashion madness, but I don't believe she ever worked up the nerve to wear them.
Thing is, the puerile clothes make sense more than the halston designs, at least with this interpretation of the song: she is like a child and meant to be so. the haircut, the gigantic eyes, the fact that she repeats again and again how her name is pronounced go with this image of a person who wants to assert themselves, but people still don’t pay enough attention. So they have to explain it again and again.

ACTUALLY I came here to find it . I met Halston and LIZA at STUDIO 54 and other places! HALSTON was wonderful to me.... Liza was fun.

She has the same performance gestures as Judy. Just, the same movements! It's so beautiful to watch.

True. I don't why her music isn't as popular as Barbara Streisand.
She has her mother's mannerisms and even her singing style.
Gotta thank Ryan Murphy he’s always educating the children.
Because of him kids know Hollywood real stars

Gays can pull it off at piano bars. Gays can also pull off insightful thoughts about the song in the comments.
Why shouldn't the song work? What is just one of the "so many reasons"? It's cute, catchy, and relatable to just about everyone.

me too. I'm surprised.

There is an unreleased version she recorded for her 1st album, so the song is even older. She first met Kander & Ebb during that time.
