- Taking in The Mall, Admiralty Arch, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Square, the Coronation route which King Charles III will travel along on the 6th May 2023 will be familiar to millions of people.
Despite involving all of these famous London landmarks, there are many smaller sites along the route which are far less known... and in this video, I'd like to show you 20 of them!

It’s an absolute pleasure- thank you so much for taking the time to watch.
The cenotaph brings back lots of memories for me. While serving in the Royal Navy I had the honour of taking part in the Remembrance Day Ceremony back in 1992. A day I’ll never forget as it was also my 21st Birthday.

Fantastic. Every time I finish watching one of your videos I think 'Rob will never better this one', but you always do! When my daughter was young we went looking for the Admiralty nose and we couldn't find it. I thought it must be a myth, but Emma insisted we stay until it was located. She obviously had more faith than me. Then suddenly we found it! 10 years later we still talk about finding it. 😊. Thank you Robslondon.

I regularly went to The Crypt Folk Club under St Martin's from when I was fifteen and the drive through bank was still there then, so it must have lasted at least until the early 1970s

@@Robslondon I was just thinking as this style of video has been so successful, could you do some more in a similar style? You could do one from Trafalgar Square to Ludgate Circus along the Strand and Fleet Street, 20 Things you didn’t know about the Strand and Fleet Street. There must be easily 20 things not very well known along this route.
In the 1940s the Admiralty Citadel had turf and grass (and wild flowers) on the roof - the Illustrated London News for Saturday 31 July 1948 says that the anti-aircraft guns had gone and engineers working in the building were growing hollyhocks, gladioli, marigolds, and vegetables up there. Shame it's not still like that.

Hi Rob, great presentation and an eye opener on some facts like the red tarmac on the Mall, the ships adorning the lamposts have a meaning and much more. I have never knew about the war office(?) bunker and its thick walls etc on Horseguards parade even though i have seen it many times on tv at trooping the colour ceremonies. I guess even the Admiralty Arch was flogged off for conversion to another hotel 😂. Anyway Rob enjoy the Coronation weekend whether your a Royalist or not. I will watch it on TV for the historical aspect if not for anything else. Cheers DougT

There used to be a drive-In branch of the Westminster Bank in Toxteth, Liverpool. My dad often got a friend to drive him there with the takings of our pub. Like other drive-in banks, it never really caught on. The bank closed some years ago and The Co-Op Funeral Care moved in, but these days it seems to be some sort of art gallery called Shuffle (don't know if that's pun in the funeral place).

Near where the dog is buried is a statue of Sir John Franklin who on the day we saw the statue they announced they had found his ship in the Northwest Passage. Thanks Rob. At St. Margarets Church, what is on the other side of the "fake window"? Does anyone know? Is it the organ perhaps?
If it is the organ then there may be no point in having a window there but the painted on design makes things more symmetrical.

I guess it’s technically off the coronation route, but I was kinda hoping you would talk about Methodist Central Hall caddy corner from Westminster. I was there for an event back in 2010, and I recall a plaque marking it as the site of the first meeting of the UN general assembly (or something UN-related). Would be neat to know more about it.
I did have Methodist Central Hall- and the UN connection- shortlisted Lucas! But, as you say, it was *slightly* off the route, and I had to narrow it down to 20! A very interesting site though. Cheers and stay well.
@Robslondon You asked abt the fake 🪟 window. I grew up in Southern California, and places like Disneyland and Knott's do it to make the facades (ex: the buildings on Main Street) look bigger than they are. It's an optical illusion. They change the width, angle, etc. IRL, I knew someone who wanted to renovate, and it was a Band-Aid to avoid a fine. Allegedly.
I wholeheartedly doubt either of these is the accurate in this case, but who knows? 🎉 I'm not sure how I ended up here, 😂 but I'm waiting to watch the Coronation live, pulling an all-nighter, and too Gen-X to be doing so.

How do I know these magical ✨️things? Easy. We're NOT posh. Everybody got a job there over summer, etc. and bc I was on rifle line (colorguard), we marched The Holiday Parade every year. Yes, including The Hollywood one on TV, etc. I hated parades.
We got to go "behind the scenes," where Tea Cups get painted, garbage receptacles are cleaned. Very classified and glamorous, but I'll spill the tea. Poof! Painted by Elves! Considering a strike, I hear. No kidding! 😂
I kill me. Just normal people fixing things. I also played alto sax w Jazz Band at Knott's, etc. That wasn't too bad. Just cold. They did use a lot of optical illusions, too.
Rob, or anyone still reading? Do u hv ANY idea what Disney's liability policy is? Well, I was finally captain. We won National Champs that year! I'm a horrible dancer. I mean, just not graceful. So, I leaned on the rifle stunts; they made *me* coreograph. 😱 Disney didn't allow us to throw the rifles in the air bc if we missed, it could injure someone. Oy bleeping vey. To this day. I get points w kids when I demonstrate I can still do the Toy Soldier Walk thing. Just throw Auntie Norma a baseball bat.

The Blue Sundial on the Church was placed there in a Blue Peter film I remember... Can't remember which presenter... Was it Peter Purvis or was it Simon Groom.... I think the former, but they were very similar

Hi Rob, Do you know anything about the taxi lamp at the corner of Bridge Street as you drive off Westminster Bridge? I believe it was once used to alert taxi drivers that an MP needed a cab. I don’t think it’s any longer in use, but I love these symbols of a yesteryear London.
Hi John, yes that’s exactly what it would’ve been for.
You can see a few more examples outside hotels and fancy old apartment blocks. They’re not used now as far as I know (I certainly never saw one in operation when I was driving a cab).

@@Robslondon Sounds quite plausible, but I'd imagine that churches would have been exempt from such taxes. I stand to be corrected though and do not claim to know one way or the other.

Here's something I'd like to share🤔🧐King Charlie the first and the centre of London 💪 in the civil war thay removed the statue gave it to a blacksmith to melt down, i belive the blacksmith name was Rivet?? Instead of melting it down, he buried it, and started selling knifs an forcks say they were from the statue, people Royalist and Cromwell's people brought them... When Charles 2nd came back the Blacksmith dug it up and got paid.. a nice story for the Dead Centre 😱☠️🗣️🆘🇬🇧💪💯 LONDON'S LOVIN IT 🤩😍🇬🇧
