you cant pass if you have his leg pinched. Its when he starts to pass that you extend your legs.. it actually makes the guy on top think he's getting the pass and then you've locked his arm.

You'd pull yourself into knee on nelly, I'm sure you could defend it into side control as well.. at this point you could maybe try to set yourself up to escape either of these positions, but skill also includes TIMING to execute the sweep. See you on the mats!
